Cheering Smarter

I'm relatively new to the blogging stratosphere, and have enjoyed my short stay since becoming a part of the community. However, I've noticed a certain trend that aggravates me to no end. While I'm sure this post may come under certain scrutiny, I believe the content.

Star-divide

There is a trend on most team blogs. A trend that is not surprising to find necessarily, but startling to find the frequency of similar posts. I understand, and recognize that one of the most rewarding ways to support your favorite team is to wish hard times on their opponents.

I mean, really...

Who wouldn't want to see Tubberville, Fulmer, and Miles in the unemployment line?

Before you scroll down to the comment section and begin typing furiously, I must concede a few things:

1.) I recognize and understand that almost certainly, if Bama wins out we will play for the National Championship, period.

2.) I understand we all have that ex-boy/girlfriend who cheers for Auburn, the annoying co-worker with Rocky Top playing constantly, and the roommate who cheers for LSU because his cousin goes there.

There are plenty of reasons to cheer against the teams on our schedule. However, there is one glaring reason that we shouldn't (or at least be reserved in our bias). Most people want LSU, Tennessee, and Auburn to lose as many games as possible before we play them. This is illogical for a knowledgeable fan.

At this point in the season, Alabama fans should hope that every team on the schedule wins out (except of course for their games against the Tide). As National Championship contenders, do we really want to face "weak" opponents on our road to the Promised Land?

We don't want to just "back-in" to the SEC Championship and NC. We want to beat the best in the country on our way to the top. To cheer against the top tier teams in the SEC that Bama is not playing that week, in hopes that they will lose is not very smart.

How insignificant has the Clemson victory became since the beginning of the season? Had we played them during Week 6, instead of Week 1 and still been 6-0 we would have been lucky to be in the top 8. We want our opponents to do well!

How much more satisfying will it be to beat an undefeated LSU team or a 9-2 Auburn team?

For the sake of the program and exposure on National Broadcasts, we want as many high profile games as possible. How amazing wasa the UGA-Bama game? We had GameDay there, national television and primetime. You think Bama playing a 7-4 Auburn team will get that exposure? We WANT the big games. The only we can have the big games, is to play opponents who have also done well.

Bama is the only team in the Top 5, who's opponents' record is above .500. This is WHY we are #2. We only want that opponent record to get better.

We could lose our #2 ranking this weekend, if certain games go certain ways. We will need all of our opponents to be as highly-ranked as possible.

So, if you're cheering for an LSU loss this weekend, you need to ask yourself: Do you hate LSU more than you love the Crimson TIde? Because ultimately, that's what it comes down to.

Every victory for an Alabama opponent, is a victory for Alabama.

I have to agree...

that I am pulling for LSU to win until we can get them! On that point, you are dead-on. It does prove what we already know, we are a GREAT team. I don’t sit around, wasting my time wishing bad things to happen to AU or UT. However, after the past 15 years and the several horrible fans of those team that are in my life, you better believe I am gonna smile when the bad times come! What comes around….

Besides, I only post on RBR the negative comments. I don’t go to their sites. I don’t get in their faces. I am a true, old school Bama fan with a bit of class. I see this site as a place to vent and celebrate amongst friends. If fans of other schools are on this site and don’t like the comments, they can go somewhere else, right?

I think what we are all feeling is justified. Some people are just a little more passionate about it than others.

Mixed bag

Logically, you are absolutely correct, SouthernComfort34. But, we also have a lot of emotion invested in Bama football, and we have put up with a lot of crap from fans of UcheaT, LSWho, and Aubarn, so it is just natural that we would want to see them suffer.

I’m like you, though. As much as I enjoy seeing those teams suck, I want whatever is best for Bama. And, I get much more enjoyment out of beating teams that think they’re on the way to a great season before they receive a Bama Beatdown (I’m looking at you, UGA), rather than winning games against opponents who know they are inferior and are just hoping to keep the game as close as possible.

I think the interesting paradigm which exists this season involves UcheaT. Many of us Bama fans find ourselves wanting to enjoy another embarrassing Vol loss while simultaneously hoping that they do enough to keep The Great Pumpkin around long enough for us to get our fill of revenge. Maybe that is exactly what will happen. Maybe Ucheat will continue to underperform for the next several years while we pile up victories over them until Fulmer completes his contract due to the outragiously high buyout. That would make me very happy.

Agree for the most part

I agree with everything you wrote, SoCo, except I would like to see LSU lose against Florida for the fact that we could then sit alone and unblemished at the top of the SEC West. An NC would be nice, but we’d have to win the SEC first.

I see were you

are coming from but, do you think that LSU feels there 07’ MNC was not deserved? It takes a little bit of Luck to get the NC game and if FL beating LSU increases our chances, well go gators. It would mean more if they undefeated but IMO not any less if they were not. Then you have to look at which team you would rather play in the SECCG. We have a tough row to hoe and I will take any advantage there is in sport.

Auburn fans are like slinkys... not really good for anything but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs.

Damn Clemson...

…for losing last night to Wake. Now they’re 3-3, so only .500. I’m torn about the LSU-UF game because the reality is even if LSwho goes down to the Gators, if they beat us, they win the tie breaker and go to Atlanta. Only with them having 2 losses would we still go.

aywstrgawey

the only reason i like seeing lsu/auburn lose is because it makes it just that much easier for us to get to atlanta. a little cushion is always helpful, but i think bama is talented enough to beat anyone in the country on any given night this year. if the will and desire is there. BOTTOM line, whats gonna happen is gonna happen…as long as my crimson tide put a smile on my face then all is goooooooood

It's not the will to win, but the will to prepare to win that makes the difference.

Well I hat e to but i disagree

Our first want should be to win the west so the more loses that the western tems have the better. Granted if we take care of buisiness end os story but beating a one ot two lose LSU team is just as big because of there national prominence right now. Now when it comes to SEC teams outside of conference different story. SEC all the way. I think that is what seperates us from the other conferences we are SEC all the way. I challenge a Michigan fan to hon estly say he roots for Ohio when they play someone like USC. It just aint happening. So remember the west , then sec then national championships. We dont have the luxary we used to have to just assume the first two would happen and then lets just concentrate on the nc. But thats just one Bama fans opinion

How can it be "just as good?"

How can beating a 1-2 loss LSU team be just as good as beating an unbeaten, top-5 ranked LSU team for the SEC championship? If you think Athens was good, just imagine rolling into Baton Rouge in November with two unbeaten teams and pulling off THAT win……sweet! Imagine all of the eyes on that game all over the nation that had been thinking in week 5 or 6 that maybe UA wasn’t for real….there would be no denying it against an unbeaten LSU. There would still be question marks with a 1 or 2 loss LSU.

I have always wanted every team we beat to win the rest of their games….even the “uglies.” (you KNOW who I am talkin about) That way, WE look good, ya’ know? I can wish this since we play AU the last week of the season! lol

I want...

…Alabama to win championships. Obviously, I would rather be 14-0 at the end of the season as well; however, if we are 11-1 at the end of the regular season, and LSU is 11-1 with a win over Bama, then I’m gonna think, ‘Damn, I wish LSU had lost one more game so we could go to Atlanta.’ So, while beating an unbeaten LSU team would be awesome, it only makes sense to root for them to lose a game or two now, if only to increase our odds of winning an SEC title. And if we win the SEC, we will play for the NC over any team with the same number of losses (except for the Big 12 champ, whom we would play).

I get your point about SOS, but we all know how much better our narrow win over Kentucky felt after Auburn lost to Vandy. You want me to root for our opponents to win? OK, I’ll root for UGA, Arkansas, and Kentucky to win all the remaining games they can. I’ll do the same for Ole Miss and MSU, with the obvious exception of their games with us and each other. I’m not pulling for Auburn, and I’m not pulling for UT.

NiceLittleSaturday...

I finished by saying I don’t yell for them to win until AFTER we beat them! That means I NEVER have to yell for the barners. Please, please don’t misquote me on that one…lol.

I may have to do something from that argument that I never do…admit you are right. Nice point. I have been going back and forth on the lsu/uf game this week. Now it may be like the au/ut game where I just sat and looked at the tv. I swear, not one emotion!! My nine year old daughter came in and sat down to watch:
“Yeah! They got the ball!” she said.
“NO!! You can’t yell for them!” I said.
“Who?” she asked.
“ANYBODY! Let’s just hope the ground opens up and swallows them before the end of regulation!” I said.

So, you see, I don’t really care what they are doing if they cannot do anything for us OR if they are those two teams! Also tomorrow, now, I am very confused. One part of me feels like I should have faith that we can go into the LSU game flawless and want them to be as well. The other part agrees with what you said. Yet another part thinks UF still has a shot at the SEC and I would rather play them—I personally don’t want to play UGS again. Then, I remember we could still lose the rest of the games and this could be as good as it gets.

Geez, I hate bye weeks!! Look what it is doing to me….I hope the guys are having a good time. Wish THEY would tell me who to yell for.

i want LSU

to be undefeated when we play them this year…. i know if they have two conference losses it basicly ensures we go to the SECCG, but this year, I want it to be either #2 vs #3 or possibly even #1 vs #2, both teams undefeated. And then for miles to prove his worthlessness as a coach while saban, the legend of terrance cody, wilson, jones, and everyone else DESTROY the coonass “bayou bengals”. I hope mike the tiger breaks out of his cage, attacks our bench, and gets eatin by andre smith and the rest of the linemen. i hope the concession stand fucks up the corndog batter and 90 thousand bobby bouches all gaux in their pants. and i want the game to be a national tv broadcast on CBS in primetime and for richard nixon to be there to crown us national champs after we win 42 to 0…. LSU must be undefeated to help these things come together, and that it why i support the argument that the better our opponents record, the better we look after having kicked all of their asses.

WOW..

tempebamafan listening to that makes me think of a building near campus you might want to visit and share your passion. They would listen! The building is labeled “Bryce”. Just go on in and tell them what you just told us! LMAO!

Let it all out, baby. Feeling better???? Here, have a sip of kool-aid after that….
