According to a source with Bamaonline.com senior writer Chase Goodbread, an MRI of Terrence Cody's right knee revealed a sprained MCL that will not require surgery. The source cited that Cody could miss 3-4 weeks of the season, which will likely keep Mt. Cody out of the lineup in two key SEC road games against Tennessee and LSU.

From al.com - Hopefully we'll know more from Saban this afternoon, but if Cody is out 3 to 4 weeks and misses the LSU game, our defense is in trouble. Ole Miss was able to get those interior runs that no one else has been able to do in the second half when he was out, and Chapman, as good of a NG as he is on passing downs, just isn't going to get it done against the run as well as Cody has. Here's hoping he heals quickly and go at LSU.

Looking back at the footage

did anyone else think the Ole Miss blocker gave Cody and an extra unecessary push at the end of that play? There was a second, Cody was on his feet before he shoved him.

I thought the exact same thing

I just happened to be watching Cody at the time from the stands and saw the whole thing unfold in real time. It seemed unsportsmanlike but probably not worthy of a penalty. Good to know he will back soon. I was worried sick when they carted him off the field, not only for our defense but for him personally. He seems like a hard-working stand-up guy that deserves that big NFL contract that will come his way if he stays healthy. Hopefully we can keep him around for 2009.

Pretty fantastic news, though

Regardless of whether he is back for LSU, he will be back for Auburn and hopefully the SEC championship game (assuming we get there).

Ole Miss second half rushing between the tackles

According to the game stats on Rolltide.com, Ole Miss attempted 14 rushes between the tackles after Cody went out of the game for a total of 61 yards. However, that includes four scrambles by Snead for a total of 36 yards (at least two of which occurred in passing situations where Cody probably wouldn’t have been in the game).

Looking only at called runs between the tackles after Cody went out, it was 10 rushes for 16 yards (which included a 9-yard carry that resulted in a fumble and a turnover). Three of those carries lost yards, two went for no gain and five gained yardage.

Cody clearly has a major impact on the game, especially an opposing team’s ability to run between the tackles, but it’s unfair to say that our interior rush defense was subpar after he left against Ole Miss, since most of their yards came on scrambles and they only had one carry between the tackles that went for more than 5 yards after he left the game.

I stand corrected then...

…just goes to show that real time perception is often different than what hindsight and some numbers really reveal. Thanks for doing the numbers.

How much of a difference...

Is it if Cody had gotten hurt early in the game as opposed to partly into the second half?

I’m not doubting the numbers above, but Ole Miss was still down by a few scores, they had to pass the ball some, didn’t they?

Our diagnostics manager

said that by Cody falling with the injury instead of trying to get his leg out, it saved him a torn ACL. If you watch the replay, his knee is rolled up. Had he turned it and gotten it rolled up from the side, his career could have been over. Wow. The legend is badass in everyway.

And, no, it was not an unneccessary push. The Ole Miss guy did as he is taught, play until the whistle. Can’t blame this on them; we ain’t Auburn and Cody ain’t Dorsey.

but the push...

… was after the whistle. At least that’s what I remember it being after watching replays.

Yeah, the push was after the whistle, but...

when someone gets hurt, the play gets over analyzed and they player gets criticized for not stopping at the whistle. When no one gets hurt and a bit of pushing keeps going shortly after the whistle (and especially when it’s Cody or Andre doing the pushing), we talk about their spunk and how they finish every play. We can’t have it both ways! As BR07 said, this is not the same type of play that the barners tried out last year. This was just an unfortunate accident that is part of playing the game.

If the push had happened and undue amount of time after the whistle had blown, or if they had stopped playing themselves and the guy had just randomly pushed him down, that’d be another story. I think the Ole Miss guy was just into the game and was trying to finish the play.

Case in point

Look at Andre in the first play of this clip.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1cy-iMU08c4

That is nothing but finishing a play. However, had the guy gotten hurt, someone surely would have complained that it happened after the whistle – the RB went down 3-4 seconds before Andre stopped pushing.
