Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Siran Stacy

So it's Tennessee week.  One of my best memories is Alabama players who come out and play a game no one expected against Tennesse.  The greatest example is Siran when he just gashed the Tennessee defence all day with the shuffle pass (check out Youtube for yourself for some great moments or memories).  I also remember, I think his name was Jeff Dunn a backup QB that was forced into action that absolutley lit up the Vols but never really did much after.  I just remember the headline of the Sunday paper saying Volunteers "Dunn: in" it was great since they were supposed to steamroll us just like the time they unveiled the orange shoes by nike (look that one up we beat them something like 50+ to 24 I believe).

Ok back on point who do you think maybe the sleeper breakout performance today?

My pick is Maze.  #4's do good against the Vol's and he got a taste last week so he should be hungry for more.

Roll Tide!

We may struggle to go deep on their corners, but we shouldn’t need to. Dink and dunk down the field and score. Thank God McElwain knows how to use a TE with good hands a route-running abilities.

A few thoughts...

Jeff Dunn was an extremely touted quarterback coming out of high school that was supposed to be the next Namath or something. In 1987, we played Tennessee in Legion Field, and they came in a top ten team and expected to shell us because we had lost the week before to Memphis State (now just plain ol’ Memphis). However, Dunn had a big night as a freshman and we steamrolled Majors and company. Click here to see some highlights.

Anyway, things were looking to take off from there, but it never happened. After drilling Tennessee, we squeaked by Mississippi State, and then we pulled another big upset over LSU in Baton Rouge — they came in undefeated in conference play, and that loss cost them a berth in the Sugar Bowl and a shot at a national title. Unfortunately, things fell apart after that, and we lost three straight to finish the season. From there, Dunn never lived up to the hype, as Vince Sutton and Gary Hollingsworth took over the next three years.

Moving on to this game, Wilson doesn’t need to have a big game. Bottom line, he just needs to protect the football — and so does everyone else — and just not make any dumb mistakes. Unless the Tennessee offense really comes to life, it should not take very many points at all to win this game, so we don’t need any huge production from the offense, we just don’t need to be stupid on offense and special teams and give a hapless opposing offense cheap points. In other words, no big turnovers by the offense, no big plays given up by the special teams, etc.

If we can do that, we aren’t going to need very many points unless the Tennessee offense suddenly finds itself. If Wilson can just throw for 150-200 yards, with no turnovers, and we run the ball fairly well with no dumb mistakes on special teams, that should be good enough to win. I may be completely full of shit on this one, but I just cannot see the Tennessee offense being able to march up and down the field and score a good number of points unless we help them out with some dumb play.

Dont know why...

but i agree…as long as we dont make any stupid mistakes deep in our own territory, i just cant see tenn. moving the ball..berry or no berry. If anything i see our defence helping the offence out today.

It's all about the process....

Let's hope so...

I don’t know what to make of the Berry package, but honestly it sounds just like the Tennessee version of the Wildcat with Berry as the star. If that’s all it is, then we should be okay against it. We have seen it many times before, and frankly we’ve seen it with better offensive players than Berry (see McFadden).

Hopefully we just play smart with it and don’t give up any big plays. Berry won’t be able to play very much on offense anyway, and so if you can just limit him relatively well, then your job is accomplished because you still leave it up to the normal UT offense to beat you via conventional methods.

Still, though, it should be pointed out that not beating ourselves is easier said than done. Coffee has had butter hands the past month, Wilson still makes dumb mistakes occasionally, opposing teams have been able to rusher the passer against us, and frankly our special teams has been terrible (sans Tulane).

Hopefully we’ll put it all together and get a win today. I don’t think we need to have a great performance, mind you, but we do have to play pretty well, and you know Tennessee will come ready to play because this is a must-win for them and frankly they have nothing to lose. Say what you will, but to be honest we have to play better than we did against Tulane, Kentucky, or Ole Miss, or we may very well be some very disappointed people come 1030 tonight.

Roy Upchurch...

…would be my sleeper pick, if I thought of him as a sleeper. I expect him to get several touches tonight. And for all you Nervous Nellies, I believe that this team is focused, driven, hungry, and that we will roll over UT from start to finish. RMFTR.

Roy wouldve been my pick too

Roy has awesome speed that he hasn’t been able to display very much. I believe we have 4 very fast running backs who can get the job done. Roy did step it up last night and man am I happy about that.

I'm with ya' NLS..

Keep getting shite from wannabes that we will fall to UT tonight! What exactly are they basing this on? Where exactly has emotion played a real factor in the outcome of an upset in this series? THAT is all they are coming in with here(and a better punter, they could win THAT battle)…WE have all of the other advantages! I just wish it would GET HERE ALREADY. I just can’t wait……rtr!!!!!!
