Dave Wannstedt
Heard he might be in the running for the Tennessee job. Would this be a good move for him? I think he would stay away from the SEC. Unless the Head Coaching jorb for Miss State, Vandy or Kentucky comes open I can't see anyone that is worth a damn would want to leave a program they are trying to build into a power house in a weaker conferance, want to coach in the SEC. If you can make millions at a Big East or ACC school why would you want to coach at a school that will run you off after having one bad season? And how much would a Dave Wannstedt or Butch Davis be worth if they were at their schools for say 5 or ten years and won a national title or at least played in the game?

Agreed
I hope he gets its. Actually I hope Ed Orgeron or Joe Lee Dunn get it. My UT friends are talking about John Gruden and have been for years.
I wouldn't piss off the boys from Alabama . . .
What is up with that
Does he have ties to the university? Why on earth would you leave the NFL, where he has been successful, to come to UT of all places. UT fans seem delusional when it comes to the lure their team/ University has, this coming from a Bama fan of course.
I have even heard Spurriers name throw in the hate. ? WTF???? Why on earth would that ever happen!
When you are an Alabama fan you have to hate Auburn, I hate Tennessee because i want to.
Gruden
I believe his wife is from Asheville-West and Gruden was a Grad Asst at UT.

Only tie is
as a grad asst at UT. Not sure why they are so high on Gruden, but I have heard his name dropped for the last four yrs or so.

And of course
Speaking purely from an Alabama fan standpoint. I would love for Wannstedt at UT. He would fail miserably sending UT into even a bigger tail spin.

I think...
I think Hell would freeze over before Tennessee would ever even remotely consider Wannstedt, much less actually pursue him.
With Gruden, I think it’s basically their version of what Jimmy Johnson was to us in the 1990’s. It’s nice for a fan pipe dream, but nothing more. Gruden spent basically one year in Knoxville as a graduate assistant over 20 years ago, and aside from that has never been involved with UT in any official role. Moreover, he hasn’t even coached in college, period, in almost 20 years.
Considering he has spent the past several years rebuilding the Bucs, and now looks to be in good shape and headed back to the playoffs for a second year in a row, I don’t see any way in hell he’d ever take the UT job. I don’t doubt that they will get a pretty good coach because it is a high quality job, but the Gruden stuff is all pipe dreams.

And with Wannstedt...
Wannstedt has no real ties either. He spent one year as a graduate assistant at Tennessee under Johnny Majors, but that was going on 35 years ago.
Moreover, it should be noted that Wannstedt was born and raised in Pittsburgh, and he is both a former player and alum at Pitt. Considering all of that, it is not a job he will leave just randomly. Even if Tennessee wanted him — and I don’t think there is a chance in hell that they do — I’m not so sure that he wouldn’t turn it down.

The
John Gruden stuff is rediculous. He’s a pro coach, always been a pro coach. He barely has patience for pro players who have trouble grasping his offense, its one of the reasons he’s gone through so many QB’s. What would happen when he had to teach it to college players with NCAA limits on practice time??

I have absolutely no doubt that if Gruden did become a college head coach — and again, I don’t see any way that happens — he would have to dramatically alter his offense. His version of the West Coast is known for being highly technical and extremely confusing with so much jargon, and you really just couldn’t implement that effectively on the collegiate level with practice time limitations. He could run the same basic concepts, to be sure, but he would have to significantly pare the offense down.
I actually tend to think this is a major problem that many NFL coaches have when they are making the transition. I may be wrong, but I always felt that was one (of many) issues that ultimately caused Bill Callahan to crash and burn at Nebraska.

I do remember that
was one of the big adjustments Stallings had to make when coming to Bama from Arizona. The offense he wanted to run had a lot of formations and shifts, and it was just not working, so they went to bread and butter halfway through his first year and ran, ran, ran the ball. I’d say that all coaches have an adjustment from the pros to college with this regard.
I think we've seen this script before, OTS
It’s called Bill Callahan: a ridiculous offense that takes 2-3 years to recruit for and learn and that is utterly bereft of any sort of downhill, physical domination. The cover 2 scheme Gruden would run is already very much a staple of the SEC: See UA, LSU, etc., so that wouldn’t be a problem. But, there are only so many world class NT’s to run in the 3-4 scheme, and with UF, UGA, LSU, UA and AU as the primary recruiting in-conference combatants, I don’t see it happening. He’s a bad fit for UT.

If Shula leaves...
wait, this conversation sounded so familiar I fell back on old habits ;)
I seriously don’t see Butch Davis leaving UNC anytime soon for UT, Auburn, or anywhere. The ACC is down and supremacy is ripe for the picking. He may very well turn Chapel Hill into a football school before it’s over, and I think they have old money to keep him as long as they want. I have heard Gruden and Bill Cowher of all people mentioned for the UT job. I see them getting a college coach or high profile assistant. Someone like Charlie Strong or Dan Mullen at Florida would be given a great opportunity (I know it pains them to hear a UF person coming, but it may be smart…)
Muschamp?
What’s the possibility of Will Muschamp finally getting his chance at a head coaching position at UT? Or, do you think they would only consider someone who already has head coaching experience?
Dr. BamaFrazier is IN!
Everything
that I’m hearing from AU faithful is that they want Mushchamp. I’ve also heard not to believe all the stories about there being a rift between him and the AD at Auburn because he would take the job if offered.
The AD
Will be the reason why he doesn’t take the job. Why do you think he left AU in the first place? Was Texas that much better of a job? From all accounts it had nothing to do with Tubbs and everything to do with the AD.
Heres the thing. Even if Auburn does in fact lose to Ole Miss, UGA and Bama, im leaning to the fact that he’d probably get another chance. Unless they lose in an embarrassing fashion in all three, which could easily happen.

Clemson...
…is in the catbird seat right now. According to Jimmy Sexton, apparently, every coach wants the Clemson job because there is lots of support, money, a fertile recruiting base, and nowhere near the competition you face in the SEC. UT and AU will have to offer big dollars, and there’s still no guarantee they will land their top choice, or even their top four or five choices.
