Florida v. Arkansas...

I’ve got to say that Florida just doesn’t look all of that great. They don’t look bad, but they certainly don’t look like anything special either.

by outsidethesidelines on Oct 4, 2008 12:14 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If we can win the west...

…I was thinking I’d much rather play them than UGA again.

by Nico2.0 on Oct 4, 2008 1:34 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

And...

Michael Smith is an impressive runner. I think I underestimated him earlier in the year, that much is clear.

He is a very small back, and he’s not going to be a particularly good every-down option, but he does have great speed, good movement from the lower body, and great balance. He’s not going to ever be an elite every-down guy, but he’s certainly a very valuable situational player.

by outsidethesidelines on Oct 4, 2008 12:20 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I thought Smith...

…was very dangerous against us. He’s looking good so far against Florida, too, but they really need a power runner to complement him.

by Todd on Oct 4, 2008 12:24 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

And then...

He fumbles the punt and gives Florida a first down inside the Arkansas 20.

Arkansas has improved...

and/or Florida looks frumpy…like Ugly Betty…

Florida....

To me, Florida just doesn’t look that good. Arkansas has thoroughly proven through the first five weeks of the season that they suck big-time, and it’s hard to fathom that they’ve made this kind of progress in the course of five days.

Florida just isn’t doing anything. They only have 180 total yards of offense right now, and 75 yards worth of penalties. If Arkansas wouldn’t have killed themselves with penalties, this should be a 7-0 or 3-0 game right now.

I want...

I want them to win very badly, but my gut instinct — based on 20+ years of watching Vanderbilt — is that they will choke.

South Carolina v. Ole Miss

I didn’t even realize this game was underway just yet, but Ole Miss is leading 21-17 in the early second quarter.

Snead has been highly efficient thus far as a passer, but he did fumble and it was returned for a touchdown.

I thought...

they got way too much pressure on jpw that last play.

by kleph on Oct 4, 2008 2:39 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Not good...

Andre whiffed on the linebacker lined up as a defensive end, and Wilson held onto the ball entirely too long.

That will result in a sack every time.

by kleph on Oct 4, 2008 2:43 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The first penalty, the illegal formation, just looked like a general screw-up, but the delay of game seemed to stem a bit from some of the defensive shifts we made.

Great...

I don’t know if you guys noticed it, but there was two great blocks on the right side of the offensive line, from Drew Davis and Marlon Davis. Those two guys cleared out a massive running lane for him.

We moved Greenwood inside to the nose and it paid off.

by outsidethesidelines on Oct 4, 2008 2:56 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Front four...

Anders, Fanney, Greenwood, and Deaderick.

I like that a lot for rushing the passer. It’s basically a front four of your top two defensive ends and your top two Jack linebackers.

by kleph on Oct 4, 2008 2:58 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Needs to catch that one...

… Arenas needs to make that grab; it saves us 10 yards of field position.

Either way, we need to really pound our way out here, we don’t need a big negative play or have to punt deep out of our own end zone.

It’d be nice to pin Kentucky up deep for a change.

by outsidethesidelines on Oct 4, 2008 2:58 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

15 more

Great block by McCall from the H-back position, he has done that extremely well lately.

Plus the 15, and we suddenly are out past the 25.

by outsidethesidelines on Oct 4, 2008 3:02 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Ingram...

Upchurch just got that carry, so either Ingram is third on the depth chart or is not going to play today.

by outsidethesidelines on Oct 4, 2008 3:02 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think so...

I figure he’s fine, but you might as well limit his carries. We get the off week next week, and with Upchurch playing so well, there’s no reason to pound Ingram any more than you need to.

And speaking of Ingram, there he is getting hammered on the ill-advised screen pass.

by outsidethesidelines on Oct 4, 2008 3:05 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I honestly don’t think Penn State is all of that good. They may go undefeated, but I don’t think that would happen if they were in either the SEC or Big 12.

by The Heffalump on Oct 4, 2008 3:17 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No...

Teams get to bring their own football. That has been the case for many years now.

Whichever team puts the ball into play on offense or special teams gets to use the ball they brought. They are usually branded with a school logo to help identify.

by outsidethesidelines on Oct 4, 2008 3:18 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Verne mentioned

that each offense gets to supply their own. Hence Hartline shouldn’t be having grip issues.

by rugman11 on Oct 4, 2008 3:18 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Huh.

Guess I just always typically noticed it with visitors.

by Nico2.0 on Oct 4, 2008 3:19 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think...

It’s usually a non-issue because so many teams use the exact same type of ball, but it can come into play on special teams plays. Some balls, just via manufacturing construction ranges, are slicker than others, and homers loved to send in the slippery balls on the plays where they would have to handle things on special teams.

Actually, that issue came up in the NFL two years ago when Romo fumbled the hold on the XP in the playoffs against the Seahawks. Supposely the Seahawks had slipped him one of the slippery balls out of the kicking ball bag.

by outsidethesidelines on Oct 4, 2008 3:21 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I don't...

I don’t know exactly when that practice started, but I know they were doing that even as early as the late-1990’s.

You cannot turn every goddamn punt return into an 85-yard score.

by outsidethesidelines on Oct 4, 2008 3:23 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Exactly...

The safe, boring play is, at times, the right play. Arenas needs to learn that in the worst way.

At times, it seems like his goal is to get on Sportscenter every time he touches the ball. That works well sometimes, but not always.

Given how much he has fumbled lately, he damn well better be or he doesn’t have much of an excuse to give to our beloved Nicktator.

Either way, he took a pretty tough shot to the head.

This game...

Should be a huge blowout right now, it should be 24-0.

Coffee better be real goddamn glad he’s had two 75+ yard touchdown runs in the past three weeks, or his ass would find a permanent spot on the bench with his fumbling horseshit.

South Carolina v. Ole Miss...

The Gamecocks just took a 24-21 lead with a Chris Smelley touchdown pass.

Our defense...

Needs a big stop here.

This is a 14-0 game that we have controlled, but it is much closer than it should be. This should be a 24-0 game right now. Kentucky is still in this game, and they should be damn near completely knocked out at this point.

Good stop...

We should have picked that one, but oh well, we forced the punt. Sharrief came in front and screwed it up for whoever was behind him.

Anyway, all right offense, get your shit together.

And by God Arenas called the fair catch there. I think the arm was going up right about the time the ball reached the punter.

I agree...

I agree, we should be okay. As long as our defense keeps dominating UK this way, we’re in great shape.

That’s just not the point, though. The problem is that if they get some offense, or we have a stupid turnover, this is a 14-7 and it’s a game that we could easily lose. Given how we have absolutely dominated them thus far, this should be a blowout at this stage, a blowout to where it would take an unbelievably monumental collapse to even bring losing back into the question as a legitimate possibility.

I know...

… and I’m not complaining if the defense can keep dominating, but I’m just afraid that eventually the Kentucky offense will find a little life, and that’s really all they need to find to get back into this game.

But you’re right, I’m a realist pessimist.

by outsidethesidelines on Oct 4, 2008 4:22 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The fact...

The fact that this game is so close is utter horseshit. We are absolutely dominating this game.

We lead in total yardage 253-60. Kentucky is averaging fewer than 3 yards per pass and 2 yards per run. Kentucky has only 4 first downs. They are 1-9 on third down.

This should be blowout city right now. The fact that this game is still competitive is utter horseshit.

Compared to how things have been over the last few years, it’s great to be in the spot we are in, complaining about how Bama should be up 24-0 at half. A few years ago, we would be tied or losing this game right now.
