JP Wilson Apologies??

Ok, I didn't say anything last week when everybody started praising JPW and offering apologies up to him after the UGA game. I too agree that he had a stellar performance in that game and he was what we all had hoped he would be when he came to BAMA.

BUT, I thought it was very premature last week offering those apologies considering his track record for inconsistency and that is why I refrained from offering my apologies along with everybody else. Do be considered a great QB, IMHO, you have to be consistent wek in and week out. Yesterday was a prime example of my biggest fear and problem with JPW, INCONSISTENT. He once again couldn't hit the broad side of the barn with most of his passes and as per is record if he is less than 60 or 70% on his first 10 passes it is going to be a long day, and it was.

Please don't get me wrong, I KNOW JPW wasn't the only problem yesterday. The whole team had issues and didn't play like we know they can AND I too agree that a win is a win, especially in the SEC. I am just saying I tought all of the apologies and JPW praising that took place last week was a bit premature. I will humbly and graciously offer up my most hearfelt apologies to JPW as soon as he has 3 or more good, consistent games and he can consistently hit the long ball.

Thank you for your time and feel free to disagree or post a rebuttle.

I think the BS

interference calls and the couple of times he hit the receivers between the numbers and the dropped the balls affected his confidence, but he has really only had two bad games – KY and Tulane. I’ll take this Wilson over previous versions anyday.

Ditto...

…I’ve never said (or thought) that JPW was Namath or Stabler, but this year he does remind me of Barker, and he had a pretty decent winning percentage. I’ve not offered apologies because I haven’t lain much blame at his feet. However, there is little hope that we can accomplish what we all now crave for this season with a game like he had yesterday, regardless of any dropped balls or bad calls. But I still have faith in the kid.

He is for sure not Namath

The illegal formation

penalty that took away Julio’s big catch (right before Coffee’s TD run) hurt JPW a lot, in my opinion. We still scored, but it was a great throw and catch, the type of thing that does wonders for a quarterback’s confidence.

We’ll see how JPW does when the game is on the line. He has the good fortune of playing with leads all season long, which forces him to be conservative. He is smart enough not to force throws when we’re ahead and he’s afraid to take unnecessary chances. He’s going to need to come out throwing in some of our games, though. Gary Danielson was right about the whole, “Make ’em dribble with their left hand” analogy he used to explain how teams will try to beat Bama. It’s going to keep happening until JPW makes big throws.

I was curious about that call on the "Illegal formation"

I never heard a good explanation of that call. The TV sportscasters didn’t get it either from what I heard. Does anyone know wht the problem with the formation was???

JPW

Saban doesn’t gratutiously give compliments or excuses and he has consistently either praised JPW for “doing what I asked him to do,” [Tulane] or said the fault wasn’t with JPW [Kentucky]. The way I look at it now, if Saban is OK with JPW’s performances, it’s OK by me. Especially when we are 6-0.

ummmm

if the refs had not made some terrible calls and, if the receivers did not drop so many passes than his performance would have been alot better! and as for the interception, it was a long pass and it was not so much a bad throw as it was a good job by the defender!!!!

sooooooo what...

we’re elitist sports fans and we call ‘em as we see ’em…
we can say he’s the greatest QB alive one week and curse him to the car dealership he will eventually own the next…that’s what we do…that’s why we’re here…
IMO he didn’t do THAT bad (cough, cough) on saturday but I question why we can’t have a consistent QB…I see them at a lot of schools (small and big) across the country and wonder why a superb, elite program like Bama can’t have the same thing…
that’s it…

"I...wonder why a...program like Bama can't have the same thing...."

We were on probation from 2002-2006, we felt the effects of it before 2002, and — although we are 6-0 — we are still feeling it today. JPW finished high school in 2004 as a highly touted QB in Alabama, but, as I recall, he didn’t receive as much love outside the state (stars and sh#t). Coach Saban is a great recruiter, but he’s not the only reason we’re beginning to see more highly rated kids back at the Capstone.

just devil's advocate here....

If he is so bad, how is he breaking so many records? What is his secret? Throw well every other game? Would that allow him to break the records of players who threw well every game? I am not too clear on the stats……

Part of it is that

most of the great QBs that Bama has had played at the school when running the ball was about all that was done. Passing was almost a necessary evil during some of those times (3rd and long situations, etc.). The only record setting QBs that did not play during times like that (that come to mind immediately, anway) were Zow and Brodie. Brodie would still have just about every record if he’d had an O-line and had stayed healthy. Zow set the records he did just because the great QBs before him handed the ball off so much that they didn’t put up the numbers that West-Coast teams, for example, would have put up. However, had we asked Namath, Stabler, etc. to pass every down, they would undoubtedly have put up numbers that would still be standing today.

Enter JPW – his first three years have been played with a team that didn’t have the ability to put out a strong run. Darby had a terrible year two years ago, and Grant played hurt for a good portion of last year. Also, there were serious problems with the O-line that have just gotten straightened out this year (and even now, we have no depth – we just have an awesome starting 5). All of that put together means pass, pass, pass – and pass he did. Sometimes to the other team, but he’s made a TON of passing attempts – sometimes 35 or so a game. All of that is going to get you some records when you follow QBs who were able to hand the ball off with great success.

Now, in JPW’s defense, you also have to be decently accurate, and have a bit of an arm, to set records like that. He’s not a terrible QB. But, he’s not elite either – the comparisons of his play this year with Jay Barker are good. All in all, I’m not unhappy with him this year, at all. He has done nothing to cause us to lose games, and has had some pretty brilliant moments. Even against KY, his numbers would have been a WHOLE lot better had some of the penalties not been called – and he can’t be faulted for any of those (the formation penalty was a mis-call). Do I look forward to a time when we have an elite QB at Bama? Yep. But if the Tide finishes the year like they started it, or even relatively close, JPW will hear no complaints from me this year.

just devil's advocate here....

As far as his records go, if you throw the ball enough times you will have the record for most completions. He has over 900 attempts and as far as the yardage record, if he throws a 5 yard pass to Coffee and he takes it 80 yards to the house, JPW gets the full 80 yards on his stats, even though he actually only completed a 5 yard pass.

Look, I am not saying the kid is the worst QB we have ever had. I am just saying the same thing that Spock stated, why can’t we get a consistent QB. The last consistent QB I remember was Jay Barker and he wasn’t flashy but he always got the job done and lead his team to a W.

Now, having said that I will say that his leadership and decision-making have vastly improved this year. I think if he continues to do the things he has been doing and improving throughout the year he will be a force to be dealt with at the end of the year.

I don't really...

…remember Barker being that more consistent, other than having more consistently good blockers, running backs, and offensive coordinator(s). And a deeper roster. And a more consistent defense to cover up mistakes made by the offense. And more consistently good special teams to score points and aid in field position. But my memory is not that reliable.

The only thing that bothers me about JP

Is that he seems to zero in on one reciever. Last year it was DJ and now its Julio. Don’t get me wrong, Julio seems to catch wethers he’s open or not but thats not the point. There has to be someone open. Were was Walker, Stover, Oakly, Maze, Scott. With those weapons he should be spreading the ball around to everyone.

That said, i don’t lay the blame on JP’s feet this week. Sure he had some bad throws, thats going to happen. What bothers me is our O-lines weakness at pass blocking. With the horses, or should i say elephants, we have up front, no one should get close to him. Especially UK DT/DE, i don’t care how good they are!

Don't take life to seriously, you'll never get out alive.
