Week Six BlogPoll Ballot Submitted

1 Oklahoma --
2 LSU 1
3 Missouri 1
4 Alabama 2
5 Texas --
6 Texas Tech --
7 Penn State --
8 Florida --
9 Southern Cal 2
10 Georgia --
11 Brigham Young 2
12 Utah --
13 Vanderbilt 2
14 Boise State 2
15 Oklahoma State 4
16 Ohio State 4
17 Michigan State 5
18 Kansas 1
19 Ball State 7
20 North Carolina 6
21 Connecticut 12
22 Virginia Tech 4
23 Wake Forest --
24 Tulsa 2
25 Northwestern 1

Dropped Out: South Florida (#14), Oregon (#18), Wisconsin (#21), Auburn (#24), Kentucky (#25).

1. Oklahoma - at Baylor - W 49-17

2. LSU (+1) - idle

3. Mizzou (+1) - at Nebraska - W 52-17

4. Alabama (-2) - vs Kentucky - W 17-14

Yes, I moved us down from #2 even though we won.  Looking at the top four teams objectively, though, Missouri, LSU, and OU may not have done as much as the Tide, but they also haven't shown the kind of inconsistent play that we have either.

5. Texas - at Colorado - W 38-14

6. Texas Tech - at Kansas State - W 52-28

7. Penn State - at Purdue - W 20-6

8. Florida - at Arkansas - W 38-7

9. Southern Cal (+2) - vs Oregon - W 44-10

10. Georgia - idle

11. BYU (+2) - at Utah State - W 34-14

12. Utah - vs Oregon State - W 31-28

13. Vanderbilt (+2) - vs Auburn - W 14-13

Vandy is a good story but they won't be ranked by the time the season ends.  They can beat Mississippi State, they can (probably) beat Duke, and they can (probably) beat Tennessee, but anything after that will be a shocker of the highest order.  Remember, Ole Miss gave them that win with a turnover, Auburn gave them a win with a missed PAT, and SC gave away their game with turnovers.  Vandy isn't playing fundamentally good ball, they've just been fortunate enough that no one else on their schedule up 'til now has either and the Commies have been able to take advantage of it.

14. Boise State (+2) - vs La. Tech - W 38-3

15. Oklahoma State (+4) - vs Texas A&M - W 56-28

I don't know what to make of the Pokes, honestly, but they are lighting up scoreboards and haven't been made uncomfortable all year long.  Over/under against Mizzou should be at least 100 since neither D has really been anything great.

16. Ohio State (+4) - at Wisconsin - W 20-17

Boo tOSU for Friend 'or RBR Nicole's sake.

17. Michigan State (+5) - vs Iowa - W 16-13

18. Kansas (-1) - at Iowa State - W 35-33

19. Ball State (+6) - at Toledo - W 31-0

Welcome to the top 24 Cardinals.  Considering the way the rest of your schedule looks, make yourselves at home.

20. North Carolina (+5) - vs Connecticut - W 38-12

21. Connecticut (-12) - at North Carolina - L 38-12

I knew #9 was way too high.  You repaid my hubris with scorn, Huskies, but I just can't stay mad at you.

22. Virginia Tech (+4) - vs Western Kentucky - W 27-13

The 'Hokies return to the rankings because I couldn't think of anyone else to put into the top 25.

23. Wake Forest - idle

24. Tulsa (+2) - vs Rice - W 63-28

25. Northwestern (+1) - idle

No problem by me with #4 ranking

It doens’t matter until the LSU game, anyway. The winner of that will be ranked #1 or #2, if undefeated. Of course, we need to worry about Ole Miss, first.

Gaudy, classless a**holes

Teams that should be reminded of sportsmanship: A) Mizzou, B) Oklahoma, C) Okie State, D) Tex. Tech. Not a single one of these teams have played ANYONE with a pulse, so, to wow the voters they think it prudent to run it up late in the game…with starters

This week alone:
1. Oklahoma. Up 42-17, 7 minutes left in 4th Q. Sam Bradford’s still in, chunking it down the field, starting running back DeMarco Murray is still in…and scores. 49-17 OU
2. Mizzouri. Up 45-10 the waning seconds of the 3rd Q…Chase Daniels is still throwing, and throws a TD pass to make it 52-7
3. TX Tech. Up 52-21 4th Q. Harrell is still in, and still passing to get to the K.State 9 yd line. Short run for the TD. 58-21.
4. Okie St. Up 49-28 with 7 mins left in the 4th. Starters still in, Robinson still passing. Still running the hurry up spread. Starting QB Robinson runs it in with less than two mins left. 56-28 over the Aggies.

I know it seems like i’m picking on the BXII, but make no mistakes, this conference is full of more douchey, run-it-up a**holes than anyone. It’s pretty easy to talk about the stellar play of the QBs when they’re beating on cripples, up by 3, 4 or 5 TDS in the late moments of the game. Just nauseating. It’s one thing to let your 2nd and 3rd team run the offense, and treat it as a scrimmage, it’s quite another to just be a classless jackass.

Do you think maybe just maybe

Oklahoma, Mizzou, TT and OSU were getting ready for their games this up coming week since the offenses have been only playing through the 3rd qtr if that the whole year? 3-2 really? that is just sad and very boring.

I can’t speak for every Big XII team but I do know the Sooners have not been running up the score on any team with their first string in the game at the end outside of Baylor and IMO they were trying to get the starters a full game with Texas coming next week.

I really like Bama and what they have done this year and I compare them to the 2000 Sooners who came from not bing ranked to winning the NC. Keep it up and maybe we will see eachother in Miami.

Eh, sort of.

Bradford threw three passes on a seven play drive with the Sooners up 35-10 on TCU and less than 9 minutes to play. They were still passing in the 4th quarter against Washington while up 55-7. Bradford was still in and passing with less than five minutes left against Cincy while up 45-10. And against Chattanooga, the backup threw four passes in five plays with under five minutes to go while OK was up 57-2.

I will say that Oklahoma is better than Texas Tech who, a couple years ago, threw the ball 14 straight times while up 50+ points.

But if you look at Bama’s 4th quarter drives in their blowouts – their last drive against WKU had 10 rushes in 11 plays and they ran the ball in 12 out of 13 plays in the 4th quarter against Arkansas.

Well

Backup qb’s have to get some work to and that doesn’t mean just turn and hand the ball off every play. TCU on the other hand they had stopped the run all day and I think Stoops wanted a little pay back from 2005. Look it is a passing league where as the SEC grinds it out every play for the most part. Back in the 70’s and 80’s the Sooners were a run only team and had several 600 yard rushing games but they weren’t trying to run up the score. JMO

Running up the score

I have never been much of a believer that it is a team’s moral obligation to be kind to another team.

I was really impressed with Oklahoma’s ability to not look past Baylor. BTW, what is up with the Texas/Oklahoma kickoff?

by Kenny483 on Oct 6, 2008 3:35 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed

If OU or some other team had taunted in the end zone after one of the TDs, or if Stoops had rubbed it in during a press conference or something, that would be another matter, but football players put on a uniform to either score points or to keep the other team from doing so – period. If inferior teams do not want to get beaten badly, then drop out of D-1 football and play the pansies all the time (or, if you’re a pansy, don’t schedule a D-1 school). The opposite of the thrill of victory is the agony of defeat, and sometimes it hurts really really bad as the score gets higher and higher – it’s part of the game, and the only part sportsmanship has to play in it is in the way players and coaches handle themselves after scoring the points.

I'm not saying teams have a moral responsibility to not run up the score,

I just hate that it often plays into where voters’ place teams. They’ll see a 55-20 win over Washington and consider it a more convincing win than Bama’s 49-14 win over Arkansas despite the fact that OK had their starters in and were throwing to run up the score while Bama was giving carries to its 4th and 5th string RBs because they were happy with 49.

Agree...

…that is the part that sucks about CFB, it sometimes gets judged as beauty contest. Too many people scoreboard watching.

For example: the Alabama/Kentucky game. It was a game that we controlled, despite all the errors we made. I never really thought we were going to lose the game, and honestly thought we played significantly better than we did against Tulane.

by Kenny483 on Oct 6, 2008 4:49 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I totally agree with that.

It’s just when the sportsmanship idea gets thrown in there that my soap box comes out! Lazy poll voters completely mess up the system – if they’d watch just one quarter of each relevant game before they vote, it’d be far more accurate than it currently is. However, it’s only week 7 now, and the voting is only just beginning to matter anyway, so any team that’s been able to put together a few solid wins has their chance, I guess – but the system is far from perfect.

Texas Tech

They actually are killing opponents with a 2-back rushing game. I was at the UMASS game a few weeks ago. Most starters were pulled in the 3rd quarter. The two runningbacks were the only starters left in the game in the 4th. I think they both had over 100 yards in the second half.

A lot of that 14 straight passes when up 50 is that their offense the last few years is their only running play was HB draw, which plays off the pass. They throw plenty over the middle of the field which kept the clock moving anyways.

I

agree with droping us to #4. Until we can prove we can consistantly dominate teams we are supposed (because we’ve dominated teams we weren’t supposed to), I say leave us out of the top 2.

What's with the CBSsports.com thing?

Did Brian pimp out the naming rights to the BlogPoll?

It

sure does look official. Maybe he wanted to add some credibility…?

haha

i think its funny how you take into account that bama moves down with inconsistent play. They’ve done more than any of the teams you’ve moved above them. Sure they looked wobbly this past week but come on man…baylor? nebraska? maybe nebraska from 20 years ago but dude. a shoddy sec team is a powerhouse in the big 12. but who cares its the end of the season ranking that matters

It's not the will to win, but the will to prepare to win that makes the difference.

I

don’t think he’s off base. Lets wait and see if this truely is an Alabama team that has turned a corner, or if its the one of the not so distant past that folded down the stretch.
