Redshirts?
Ok now that we are half-way home can any of you smart people who do a great job of research tell me how many of this freshman class have red shirt possiblities for the rest of this season. Barring injury I would think everyone who has not played so far this year would go ahead and pick up the red shirt. Position and stars would be cool also. Roll Tide everybody! One more Roll Tide for 75!

Guessing
Glenn Harbin
Star Jackson
Alonzo Lawrence
Robert Lester
Wesley Neighbors
Brad Smelley
Damion Square
Jermaine Preyear
Ivan Matchett
I think most of everyone else has seen some playing time.
Final Word
Tide Sports has an article, and lists the 10 freshmen who have not played this year.
Unless something extreme occurs, any true freshman who has not played yet will almost certainly redshirt. Only 10 members of the last recruiting class don’t have game experience: Michael Williams, Star Jackson, Brad Smelley, Undra Billingsley, Ivan Matchett, Wesley Neighbors, Alonzo Lawrence, Glenn Harbin, Damion Square and Robert Lester.
Jermaine Preyear actually is taking a grey shirt this year, as he is not enrolling in school till January. Also, mentioned below both Barret Jones and Tyler Love are applying for medical hardship waivers to regain an additional year of eligibility.
Just adding to Kenny's list....Im guessing too...
I think you can play a little and still be redshirted so….
Jerrell Harris
Chris Jackson
Robby Green
Chris Jordan
Courtney Upshaw
Corey Smith
Marcel Dareus
John Michael Boswell
Tyler Love
Barrett Jones
Michael Williams
Alex Watkins
Undra Billingsley

I have heard of guys playing like 2 games and then being redshirted…..I actually think it boils down to how many snaps you play…i think…
Don't take life to seriously, you'll never get out alive.
It's hwo many
games you play in and the relation, percentage wise, to the full schedule.
For instance, if you play in the first three games of a 12-game schedule, you have played in 25% of the season.

Not Technically
You actually lose your redshirt as soon as you see any playing time during the season. You can regain your redshirt through an appeal to the NCAA, assuming you have met certain criteria, like playing time. The most common appeal for an extra year of eligibilty is because of an undisclosed injury that a player had that prevented them from competing in any additional games after they were injured. Of course, as you can imagine those injuries are sort of the suspicious variety.
Last year Nick Fanuzzi saw action in one game, Western Carolina, and yet he was denied his redshirt year, even through the appeal to the NCAA. He is actually using his redshirt year this year in his choice to transfer to Rice. The best solution would be for the NCAA to eliminate the redshirt year, and just give players 5 years of eligibility.
Thats
what I’ve always heard from sports people. That as soon as you play in any game you lose your redshirt.
Here is the Definition straight from the NCAA
This is a part of the definition of a redshirt via the NCAA webpage….
"You should know that NCAA rules indicate that any competition, regardless of time, during a season counts as one of your seasons of competition in that sport. It does not matter how long you were involved in a particular competition (for example, one play in a football game, one point in a volleyball match); you will be charged with one season of competition. "
Hope this helps.
Some of these guys
are amazing football players. Jerrell Harris, Robby Green, Tyler Love, Barrett Jones, and Upshaw are all incredible. However, did anyone see how terrible Corey Smith is? I don’t understand why our kicking game is so frustratingly sub-par.

Seriously
there are alot of smart people here on campus that could use his wasted scholarship.

I would not be so hard...
…on Corey Smith. He kicked on a tee in high school, and getting adjusted to regular kicking is very difficult. I will say that spotting a scholarship kicker is extremely difficult in high school, that is why most programs will not offer a scholarship till someone gets on campus.
He has plenty of time to prove his worth, and hopefully we will not have to see him till Tiffin leaves.
Tiffin...
…had a worse game his freshman year against Arky, and followed it up with a record year as a full-time starter. Methinks young Smith was a little nervous. Let’s not assume he will always look ‘terrible’.

Redshirts
The Rapsheet has some more info on potential redshirts/medical hardship.
For the first time, Saban seemed to raise the possibility that freshmen tackles Tyler Love and Barrett Jones might seek medical hardship waivers. Both players played in game three against Western Kentucky, theoretically making them eligible to receive their year back if they have injuries.
“Both those guys have fought injuries,” Saban said. “Tyler Love with his ankle, and Barrett Jones with his shoulder, and I don’t know what will happen with them the rest of the season.”
