Around SBN: The End Of Sabanball: Details, Barbarians, And Precision

A call for some decency. Please.

Honestly, I am not the intertubes' Ms. Manners, but I was just at one of my favorite blogs, "And the Valley Shook", and I saw something that frankly disgusted me: A purported Bama fan (and newbie), 48 hours after the fact, creating a s***-talking fanpost, with the sole purpose of being an ass.

I can run some shit in a thread, and we all can *,  but to go to someone's "house" to just rub in a victory, in which we DID NOT TAKE ANY PART, is to just be a douche and otherwise detract from the blog of another team. It  is so f'in bush league that I can't describe my disgust.

I am not a professional blogger (nor do I play one on tv), but this is all that behavior accomplishes:

  1. It reaffirms every negative stereotype of team A, state A, school A, fans of A.
  2. It really cheapens the work of the damned fine (usually) college kids who compose these things.
  3. It steals bandwidth from the servers of the #2 above.
  4. It focuses attention on you rather than on the legitimate purposes of the authors' endeavors...to provide fans and alums with an interesting forum and a community
  5. And, you are diminished from our own communities. E.g., you're "that guy".

There are obviously a lot more, but I just really felt compelled to rant for a moment. Just like tearing down a goalpost, this is something that should be well-beneath us. (I kid, Yankees, I kid...Keep Mr. Sherman the hell away from us).

Anyway, the lesson is to act like you've been there before, newbs.

*In Todd's defense, and speaking as a pure partisan, Cook deserved it. Other non-partisans, of course, are free to voice their own, far-more measured opinions ;)

FanPosts are just that; posts created by the fans. They are in no way indicative of the opinions of SBN and the authors of Roll Bama Roll.

Good post

I am sure you saw I have already been there, but that shit was uncalled for. We gripe and bitch about them coming over here starting shit, and then we go right over and threaten a whole group of people. Unlike Track Em Tigers, I actually respect the MODS at And The Valley Shook; they seem like good people.

Not defending...

…the original post, but to his credit, brandonh did apologize for it. Not all irrational fans would have.

That being said, burning Coach Saban in effigy was appalling. The fans chanting F*** Saban was horrible. I feel terrible for his family and for him. He says his emotions for LSU are positive. That they remain that way is amazing. He has represented our University with so much class in dealing with this adverse situation. I have a tremendous amount of respect for him. We need to strive to emulate Coach Saban and not lower ourselves to the level of the LSU fan base.

I am not usually a big fan of Pat Forde, but he said it best – “LSU fans are seeing firsthand, the brilliance of a coach who used to be theirs. This is jealousy, pure and simple. They want him and can’t have him. They used to love him, but the depth of the embrace was never fully reciprocal.”

The entire article was good – http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/columns/story?columnist=forde_pat&id=3690786&sportCat=ncf

As opposed

To uh burning an efigy of coaches who come here to play us. That right there was downright repulsive to me. Yet I see no one on the other side saying so on their post. Hey screw em they get classless acts on them because they area classless fan base.

You are right but

we don’t want to be at their level.

The burning of an effigy

was a promotional stunt done by an apartment complex for publicity. They offered free beer and food to get people to show up and there was a little over 100 people there. That is why most LSU fans aren’t talking about bc it was a stunt. I think the apartment complex is owned by a company that isn’t even from Louisiana.

The papers said it was a BUST.

That about 30 seconds in, the dummy burned up and all that was left was a burning cross! People were repulsed and left immediately! They said that is why there isn’t any real video coverage of it, just the lighting.

Well, they are classless,

but operating on their level in also classless. Bama fans have no reason to gloat after a win. We are Alabama and they (our opponents) will never be. We must display class at all times. Is that not our moto: act like you have been there before? That is why we will never see the goal posts torn down at BDS, we are supposed to beat every team we play there.

To represent UA with pride and dignity and to fight for every inch of ground and give non back. For if I do not do this……………………..Saban will breath fire down my neck and kisk my ass all next week…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….lol hahahahah rtr just kidding guys.

obviously

stuck in the plains has not been out of the house much or away from Tide fans in the past few years. I travel all over the US and the Tide faithful have been taking a beating for some years now and I think the opposing fans of all other teams took the gloves off years ago and I see no need for us to try and put them back on now. The opposition has been throwing brutal blows for years and I say if they can’t take it they should not have been dishing it out for years leading up to the Tides return. I have stuck with the Tide and like to show class, but I do not know what the person who made the post has been through, nor do you. He/she may have been told the Tide is the lowest form of breathing organism on the planet. I don’t know about you, but as for me if someone told me that the teeth would be flying and class would be the last thing on my mind. So, he/she may be saying it in the nicest way that their body and mind will let them. Conclusion, you are not them and they are not you. I bet they probably don’t eat the same things you do, now are they classless because of that, also.

???

Bamabass, this is like kids fighting on the playground. He called me the “lowest form of breathing organism on the planet” so I called him a . . . At some point kids grow up and those that attend the Capstone should adhere to the creed. What happened to Coach Bryant’s philosophy? Hit them hard, then help them up, and hit them hard again. Let our actions on the field do all the talking.

“We got class, we gonna find it out. We got class and I know we got it” -Coach Bryant

Coach Bryant was strongly against trash talk as I recall hearing from his players.

I wouldn't piss off the boys from Alabama . . .

I'm all for a street fight...

You know, meet me on the playground or at the blacktop when school gets out. You do a little jawing beforehand, occasionally get your subordinates to jaw at their subordinates. BUT, at the end of the day, when the ass-kicking is done, you dust off your pants, dab at your nose, and walk away. Taunting, especially when it’s been settled for over two days (e.g., 28% of a football week) is just so passe. It’s gauche. It’s tacky. It’s not who we are. We reserve some good-natured ribbing for the Barn, and to some respect U-Cheat. But, again, that’s face-to-face stuff, man. It’s not going and serving a shit meuslix -at someone else’s house- when the score has been settled.

This seems to tie in perfectly with the deaths...

….of fans who were showing no class—-on either side. The more information that comes out, the more you realize everyone had multiple opportunities to shut their mouths and drive away. (or not be around one-another to begin with!) Now, none of them have the opportunity.

I have been guilty of running my mouth—MOST often when I was younger and most often to Barners—but you HAVE to learn from the past. Being a gracious winner is just about the classiest thing a fan can do. And as a bonus, it gives no one a reason to pull a shot gun on you!

by crimsongirl on Nov 11, 2008 2:42 PM CST reply actions

I think the most recent information that has come out about the deaths was the victims weren’t LSU fans. I believe the family is quoted saying that it wasn’t about football at all.

by shelby924 on Nov 11, 2008 3:04 PM CST reply actions

The daughter of the victims

this morning, said her parents were UA and the shooter was LSU and the last thing anyone knew was that they were on the phone taunting “roll tide.” You are probably right, though, that it escalated beyond that. That is sort of the point that I am making, that you have the chance to show class from the beginning. If you don’t start, there is nothing to finish. If you have ever seen one of these alcohol-induced “discussions,” you know that they really aren’t about anything important in the big-scheme, anyway. They just often have devestating consequences.

by crimsongirl on Nov 11, 2008 3:14 PM CST reply actions

And, it doesn't change

redneckery ensues. In any event, it’s horrific.

some of the most enlightened discussions in my life

Hell, no! A tie is like kissing your sister!

HEAR HEAR

I agree completely. Point to the scoreboard, sing Rammer Jammer—and go home Number One. Don’t need anything else.

Never quit. It is the easiest cop-out in the world.
