Bryant-Denny Expansion to 101,000 Seats in the Works
ed. - bumped from the fanposts
via blog.al.com
The Physical Properties Committee of the University of Alabama Board of Trustees heard a presentation from UA today regarding the proposed $80.6 million expansion of the south end zone of Bryant-Denny Stadium. The committee unanimously approved the project to move into the third of four stages, the fourth being final approval to begin contruction and bring the facility to a capacity of more than 101,000 seats.
This didn't take long. We've only been at 92,000 for what, 3 or 4 years?

How many of you guys are on the waiting list? I signed up in 05. Is there anyway to check on it? Tide pride tickets that is.
Auburn fans are like slinkys... not really good for anything but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs.

It may have only been three years,
but we’re selling out every game at 92,000. Why not expand?

the only reason not to...
would be the crap economy, that’s why this was put on hold earlier this year.
I'm in no condition to drive...wait! I shouldn't listen to myself, I'm drunk.

Yeah, but...
Regardless of how crappy the economy may be, Alabama football is thriving. We’re going to absolutely shatter all-time revenue / profit records this year at the university, so that shouldn’t be an issue.
If you just looked at the financial health of the football program, you’d swear it was an economic boom.

True enough...
Hell, our program experienced its greatest period of growth during the Great Depression.
Bottom line, at least for Alabama football, recessions / depressions don’t really matter. It may be ridiculous, but the importance played on it causes it to transcend mere economic conditions.

Truth from the "other football"
Granted, he was talking about soccer and the much harsher sufferings of Africa, but George Weah once famously said:
Football brings a suffering people joy.

We have been "a suffering people"...
…for almost a decade and arguably since January 1, 1993.

What brings me joy
Is the suffering we have bestowed on others this year!!
Sure I'd like to beat Notre Dame, don't get me wrong. But nothing matters more than beating that cow college on the other side of the state.

I agree
it still seems risky to expand right now, while there is no doubt that saban has rekindled fan base support for the program… we have to face the music that the economy is hurting… 80 million dollars just to add another 10 thousand seats… I hope we do not commit hubris in wanting to have the largest capacity stadium in college football. we know bad economic times are here and worse is even coming… Im of the mentality we save as much as possible in the years of fat to have in the years of lean.

The 80 million they're spending on the stadium is providing JOBS
to folks who need them during this time. Rather than saving it, we need more places DOING exactly what the university is doing. The more rich organizations that put money back in the economy right now, the more people will get paid, and the more people who get paid, the more tickets they’ll be able to afford. Keep it up Mal (and whoever else is involved)!

Just an interesting tidbit here...
I thought I had heard this on a visit to the Bryant Museum, so I checked it out before I posted:
“Consecutive sellouts=All home games in Tuscaloosa since 1988.”
20 years of sell-outs is a pretty sure investment. I don’t think we will have a problem selling the tickets, no matter what happens with the economy. Football is one of those “feel good” things that people find a way to afford, even in the worst of times! rtr!

the university has plenty
they are still expanding enrollment. we have about 25k students now and they want to have 28k. we’re packed in here like sardines. parking is awful. if we don’t see some sort of benefit from it I would be pissed. the student section isn’t big enough as it is. only 600 students got tickets to the sec championship game when the university was given 17,000. gave the rest to the alum. i’m glad they’re treating somebody well though. maybe that’ll give me something to look forward to. but as it stands right now our university is lowering its standards to make more money. don’t ever sweat this place not having enough.

Well
I hope we aren’t lowering standards. I would like to see us raise the standards a little bit. Not to be like Vandy but lets have some pride in our academics.

UA now has over 27000 students
and the admission standards are higher than ever in recent history. The increased enrollment is from out of state students, mainly TX and FL. UA has full time recruiters in several major cities that attract kids from private schools, where the parent can foot the bill for the increased tuition. The budget at UA has not been overly hurt by the state reductions bc state funds represent a fraction of the UA budget, unlike smaller state schools.
I wouldn't piss off the boys from Alabama . . .
by I hate UT on Nov 15, 2008 12:53 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
well then maybe
I just hope that standards were higher in the past because the kids that I have class with are jokes. If you could hear these people you’d have your doubts as well. I love this place more than anywhere in the world and I hate to see it represented by some (most definitely not all or even a majority) of these “students”.
My tuition is going up. Given I don’t have to pay it but the average student with no scholarship money is suffering. It was announced this morning in our Crimson White that tuitions would continue to rise to help boost the staff’s salary due to the economic turn. I have no problems raising the staff’s pay at all but I wouldn’t say that the city kids are paying the whole bill. My point was that I’m glad we’re seeing some benefit from being cramed in here like coins in a piggy bank. I didn’t mean to piss anyone off but I would like to see our average student be able to hold his/her own in a classroom.
Roll Tide. Beat Auburn!

Remember where most of the students come from: public schools. The standards there are going down, I don’t care WHAT anyone tries to tell you. My daughter has to attend a public school in a small town b/c I don’t have the coin for private. Luckily, she has grandparents, mother, uncles and adult friends who contribute to her education outside of the classroom with educational activities and actual lessons. If I left it up to the school system entirely, she would never be ready for a college classroom! If universities in the state have to lower standards, I would imagine this might be one of the reasons. It is a very touchy subject for everyone, in every stage of education.

What do you mean...
…by “lowering its standards”? Dr Witt is doing a fabulous job and our academics are great and getting better – http://president.ua.edu/wittbio.html
A lot of the money for the North End Zone came from the members of Crimson Tradition and probably will for the South End Zone too. Parking really does need to be improved on campus. There’s a lot of construction going on right now which makes traffic terrible.

great idea
dont know why it’s taken so long to get to “phase 3 out of 4” we should start building the day after the Iron Bowl. my dad, brother and myself paid 250 bucks a ticket to see the tennessee game last year. more seats=more fans=less ticket scarcity=me being to come back for games more often….
