Four misdemeanor charges could be brought against the suspect in a Thursday night altercation being investigated by the University of Alabama Police Department.
The university confirmed today that a football player and two members of Delta Tau Delta fraternity were involved in "a verbal exchange ... that escalated into a fight" near Bryant Hall on the UA campus. One student sustained minor injuries and refused medical treatment, according to the statement released by UA media relations.
UA officials declined to name the football player or fraternity members, citing federal privacy laws. No charges have been filed and no arrests have been made as of this afternoon.

Does this tie in with the McClain rumors?

Thats whats making the rounds
on the Tidesports forums… Hope it’s not true

Not sure if it's true, but
Heres a summary of most everything I’ve seen
HT Shredmaster – Tidesports forum
According to my sources, two drunk frat boys from the DTD fraternity encountered said football player between the Chi Phi house and Bryant Hall and one of the drunk frat boys called said player the “N word”.
Said player then proceeded to do to the offending drunk fratboy what Godzilla did to Tokyo.
My take:
No charges are being filed because if the fratboy did indeed say what is being alleged, he may also be at fault as calling a black person the “N word” is an “actionable insult” in legal parlance. Not to mention filing charges would embarrass the drunk fratboy and his frat and incur the ire of the ENTIRE university community effectively ostracizing them.
Coach Saban, knowing the (good) character of this particular player, and knowing that he would not make up this story and having lived, played and worked with people of color all his life understands and will not suspend said player.
That being said, Coach will still probably counsel the player and indicate there are always alternatives the player can take in these situations.

Grain of Salt
I’m certainly not saying my sources are better, but I heard much differently, that someone almost hit somebody with their car (unintentionally), words were said, and then hotheaded 20 year old males escalated the situation, and like most situations, there isn’t a “right” and “wrong”.
Also, much like Todd had to point out yesterday that Alabama fans need to stop walking around with a chip on their shoulder about how they aren’t getting respected, fans also need to not jump to conclusions that a member of the Alabama football team must be wearing a white hat and any incident must mean that everyone else involved are bad guys. Eldar and Johns were members of this team too, and are no longer due to character issues. Not saying that Mclain or whoever was in the wrong at all, just don’t assume that its impossible.

Car story
I just finished reading that on TiderInsider myself. The only consistent thing I’m seeing is the supposed involvement of McClain.
I’m not trying to insinuate that I think that McClain is innocent. I have no idea. If he did beat these guys up, he should be suspended for the game

Didn't mean
to single you out in particular, mostly the yahoos you see post on al.com and places like that, saying that the Greeks had it coming regardless, and they are always causing problems for the football team, and he better watch his ass, and so on. I love Alabama football as much as the next guy, but its still a sport played by students at an amateur level (although its hard to view it as amateur athletics anymore). They’re just kids, and there’s more important things (to them, me, everybody) than SEC titles.

I'm right there with ya Todd...
but I heard rumors that it was Rolando McClain. BUT THIS WAS AN AUBURN FAN WHO TOLD ME THIS!!! So don’t get angry at me if i’m wrong.

Karle/Finebaum confirm the rumor.
They say there was a fight between the two houses, by the frat guys and “a VERY GOOD player” but they won’t release his name unless there is “something official” which I am assuming official means charges. They didn’t give a reason for the fight, just that NS doesn’t need this right now…..duh!

an "actionable insult" in legal parlance"
No such thing exists, at least as a concept where you are could be legally justified to physically respond to a word.
by rtr on Nov 14, 2008 7:22 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
No, but IF...
and of course all of this is just speculation, but if the word was said, action could be brought ON CAMPUS against the person who spoke them. Especially, being members of a fraternity (if they were) and being on school grounds (if they were). THAT is a B I G deal, as it should be.
IF this is what went down, this is kind of a draw, isn’t it? Maybe that is why there are no charges and no reports yet, etc. Nobody really wants to do anything because then EVERYONE gets in trouble.

this kind of thing needs to be...
swept under the rug. Who cares?
Two punks started something with a football player, nobody was seriously hurt, the kid that got hurt did not seek medical treatment. Boys will be boys.
Nothing to see here people, move on…RTR!

I'll say this about it...
I was fiercely independent during my years at the University and there were many times I would’ve liked to have run over a couple of frat boy pukes, but you have got to be an idiot (or drunk off your nut) to let the situation escalate to the point that you get your tail handed to you by a 260 lb linebacker. If I was the friend of the puke, I would’ve punched him in the mouth just to save his skin.
In the interest of fairness, however, Ro should know better than to risk his career over something or someone this stupid. Sticks and Stones and all that jazz…

Nothing needs to happen
This is not a big deal. Some college boys got in a fight. Big F’ing deal. Only a big loser would press charges over something as insignificant as this.
My advice to those involved: LET IT GO.

Well...
Hopefully it’s not Rolando McClain, but it may very well be a possibility. The rumors were there earlier, and though they seemed like typical Barner BS to begin with, it is all starting to make sense.
I will say that, as ‘Bamagrad mentioned, I don’t think it’s really a big deal. From the limited set of facts we have, it seems like a fistfight between Player X and a couple of frats… that’s not exactly any damning event. Moreover, most of us have probably, at one time or another, wanted to smack a dumb frat just to shut him / them up, so it’s understandable from that point.
Unfortunately, with the way the media publicizes everything, some disciplinary action will be taken, I’m sure. Maybe it’s not even him, but at this point I don’t think anyone should be overly surprised if there is no #25 in the game tomorrow night. In the short term, I don’t think it will hurt us too much. Prince Hall can fill in admirably, I would imagine, so hopefully McClain — if this turn out to be true — can be back for the SEC Championship Game in three weeks.
As for McClain, this dumb shit is going to start adding up. He already had the motorcycle wreck where it was a miracle he didn’t die, and now he gets into a fight four months later (if true), with the potential of arrest. This kid has a very, very bright NFL career awaiting, and he is hurting himself more than he is hurting us. He had better clean up his act ASAP or he is going to be branded a character case, and his stock will drop accordingly.

Three syllables for whoever the player is...
D J Hall….
Keep his draft status in mind before you do anything too stupid…even if it seems justified at the time.

dj hall
can’t carry rolando’s jock in terms of nfl potential.
by gerry dorsey on Nov 15, 2008 8:05 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
My point was not that
Rolando is the same caliber of player (and I didn’t even know it was Rolando at the time), but that DJ Hall should have gone in the 3rd round or so of the draft, and gotten paid a pretty decent salary, but didn’t even go and then had to try and fail as a walk on. Rolando is first round material for sure, but character issues sliding him into the late 2nd, early 3rd round of the draft is going to cost him millions – this better not continue.

riding a motorcycle
may not be the wisest decision for an nfl prospect, but it doesn’t make you a character case and isn’t likely to affect draft status. especially given that i’m pretty sure he’s learned his lesson in that department.
by gerry dorsey on Nov 15, 2008 8:04 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Well...
Riding a motorcycle doesn’t make you a character case, of course, but riding a motorcycle without the proper riding equipment, then crashing it and sliding it under a moving SUV? That’s a different story.
Even if they don’t look at it from a character perspective, the last thing that NFL teams want to do is spend lots of money on players who are going to engage in very risky behaviors off the field, so that’s an issue too.
And no, you are right, D.J. Hall was a shell of the prospect that Rolando is even right now, muchless a year or two from now.

All I'll say is..
The more Bama frat boys Rolando McClain beats up, the more I like him.
Ooh.. and if he breaks one of their noses in the fight, the white powder that falls out will make it look like Christmas.

Chill boys. Watch the presser. It's all over!
“We’ll handle it internally.” are the sweetest words we could have heard!
(of course, CNS’ blood pressure was starting to rise with his voice and I was screaming at the video “Stop talking NOW! You don’t have to tell them anymore!”)

I'm
starting to hear things about an apparent lack of support of the football team (and players) from the frats at UA. I noticed empty sections of the student section where the greeks always sit. Can anybody shed some light on this for me?
by Bens4vcobra on Nov 16, 2008 2:49 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I noticed empty sections last night, too.
It was close to the end, and the game was pretty well wrapped up. I just guessed they got cold. Now that you mention it, there was a whole BLOCK of empty seats, not just scattered empties. That is puzzling.

Could
a certain frat be trying to send a message?
by Bens4vcobra on Nov 16, 2008 7:26 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
What message would that BE?
“We want the university to take away our Block seating” I hope that isn’t at all true. Maybe there was an event or something….I would hate to think THAT would be the place someone would chose to make a statement. Especially one that is so unclear, and just makes them look bad to the average viewer.

but we’re talking about college kids here. Maybe in their minds they are ‘protesting.’
