are we screwed next year... @ QB?
next year will be the first year we don't have JPW as quarterback... while, JPW isn't the most overachieving of players in that position, this year he has shown that he is a hell-of-a solid QB. we have not lost a game or even come close to having a game put in jeopardy because of poor decision making coming out of the QB position (hopefully that does not change in the SECCG). next year could we be in the same situation as LSU is this year, complete in every aspect of the game except the guy taking snaps?? we've got greg mcelroy (redshirt sophmore), star jackson (redshirt freshman), and aj mccarron (recruit)... from what I've read about greg and aj they are both drop back passers, and star is the dual threat. If I could ask CNS a question, it would be... "coach... how are we looking at QB for next year?" and I hope it wouldn't be answered... "next year has no bearing on our next game... a'ight"... I'd like to hear his assessment of the other young men he is coachin' up to replace JPW.
after thinking about it, several teams this year have been struggling at QB and it has adversely affected their season. auburn with a learning kodi burns, south carolina with the QB duet. georgia really doesn't have the same excuse with stafford (he is a junior this year..) next year he will rock again. does tebow come back for his senior year? I think the best thing that could happen for our season next year is that stafford and tebow do not come back for their senior year... that way the playing field at the QB position is a little more level for the entire SEC.

I'm not worried...
but I must confess, I’m not really thinking about next year. McElroy won’t start. Watching him in the Miss St. game, he just doesn’t look like a QB. I think Star will start and AJ will redshirt. While Star will have a lot of learning to do, he is a playmaker, and he will get it to the guys that he needs to get it to.
KAREEM JACKSON!!!! THATS MY BOY!!!!
Been wondering the same thing
I don’t know about screwed, but going from a 3-year starting senior QB to whomever will no doubt result in a dropoff. I think we’ll be better off than Auburn and Tennessee since they were also installing new offenses. But LSU’s offense is similar to ours and their lackluster QB play has haunted them against their best opponents. Hard not to think we’ll have similar issues.
A related concern … and in some ways, more terrifying than having a newbie as starter … is the fact we’ll be replacing Caldwell, Smith, Davis, McCall, and Walker. You don’t lose that much depth on the line without ill effects, so combine that with a new QB and we could be in for some serious growing pains.
Best case scenario is we stumble early while figuring things out before hitting our stride in mid-to-late October.

i second that
our strength is in the trenches. O-line and D-line. everything on offense is a direct result of how good the O-line is. it won’t matter who the QB is if the O-line next year (without Caldwell, Smith and McCall) can’t open holes for the run game and protect the QB. the big uglies will probably be harder to replace than JPW.
eh
Pryor>Boeckman
I dont think JPW is that good… in fact, some of his best games were in his first year playing. Remember vs Arkansas? I think Star will start and be an instant success. Maybe not an instant super-star, but he wont be losing games for us I think. I mean, look at his supporting cast. Hell be given every chance to build a solid career off of what I think is some pretty good talent judging from his recruiting vids.

That’s why I have been totally bewildered by all of the pundits who have said that this year was too soon for Bama to have a breakout year, that 2009 would be the year that we would dominate. I’ve been wondering for weeks now why anyone would think that, considering that we are going to have to break in a new QB.
Dr. BamaFrazier is IN!
Im not worried myself because of Coach Saban..
You look at the production and the impact the freshman have had on the team this year ( I believe we have started 11 freshmen at times) I think Saban will have Star or McElroy ready to go.
Saying that..it is QB..not RB, not DT, not any other position it is what most programs are built around. But, if one person can have a young QB ready to compete its the man we have in charge.. Enough Said.
I dunno...
McElroy didn’t look too bad in the 4th quarter…
"The nice thing about supporting a bedraggled-cum-decent team? Watching all those analysts eat their words."
I thought McElroy...
…looked fine last night. He completed the 2 passes he threw. He hasn’t been given much of a chance to do anything. I thought Coach Mac should have let him air it out and go for a TD instead of running the ball. We weren’t going to lose the game even if he threw a pick 6.
For those of you who have been worried about McCarron playing baseball instead of football, I don’t think so. He was signing footballs outside the stadium for a very long time last night and it was damn cold. He is really lanky. Hope he bulks up a lot in S&C.

It's all about Crimson - ROLL TIDE!!!
I know we are
undefeated and should beat Aub. and if we play perfect (UGA 1st half) we can beat UF. But our O does not scare anybody. Other teams have figured out we are going to run left when we need yards etc.
In order to get to the offense level of a Florida we are going to need a QB that is a better athlete than JPW. I don’ t know if that is Star or McCarron. I think McElroy is going to play a lot like JPW- safe, conservative, etc. He is not a great athlete, but he is very intelligent and I think a pretty tough kid.
I think our D will be even better next year. McElroy starts the year with Star getting 2 or 3 series during the 1st few games. McElroy and the D are good enough to beat an average Va Tech team in the dome and FIU on Sept 12. I’m guessing we can also beat Arky at home with McElroy.
Our first big test will be at UK on Oct. 3rd. I think Star will be the starter by then. Even with a freshman I think we have a great chance to repeat as SEC West champs.
We can go 6-2 in conference and that will be good enough for the west especially if we can beat Ole Miss.
However we will not be an offense next year that is on the level with the returning Tebow.
The one factor that could change all this is the emergence of a dominating running back. I like our backs, and if Coffee were to improve as much next year as he did this year he’d be dominating. But right now I don’ t think any of our backs can carry our team like a McFadden did for Arky.
Considering
that our O line is going to be in the rebuilding phase, I’m thinking that might give an edge to Star Jackson. An athletic QB that can make big plays with his feet will make it harder for teams to get pressure.
Good point
lets not forget McElroy’s videogame-esque highschool senior numbers. The kid can throw at the highest level that he’s ever been allowed. If we had the ability to put a pass-rush wall around him to fire behind, I’d expect to see great things.
However as you said, we might need a scrambler while our O-line can provide adequate protection.
OK...
…I don’t really want to think about this right now, but…(1) LSU prepared to face this season with Ryan Perilloux and Andrew Hatch as their main QBs, but have had only Jarrett Lee at the position for weeks. AU screwed their OC and his protege and have finally handed the reins over to Kodi Burns. Personally, I don’t expect to see McElroy at JSU next year or CNS firing our OC midseason. I like McElroy to be what Mike Shula was (as a player, obviously), an average athlete but very smart. I also like Star to play and prepare for 2009. Also, I believe our O-line will take a step back, but provide more than ‘adequate’ protection (please see ’08 and ’09 recruiting). Now I shall focus on the boogs. Thank you.
