Myth: Auburn has nothing to lose

Is it just me, or do we hear every day about how "dangerous" Auburn is because they have "nothing left to lose?"

Today the Auburn SB Nation blog posted an "interesting" post that rehashes that old argument:

I will give Auburn one category though, and it does not show up on the stat sheet.  We have what commentators like to call the intangibles.  We have a coach who needs a win badly, a team with a QB with nothing to lose.  I think it will be close.

Let's be honest... Auburn has a lot to lose here. Tuberville is trying to protect himself from his worst record as a head coach (and possibly the unemployment line), the Tigers are trying to get bowl eligible, and they're trying to preserve the streak that they enjoy so much. Not to mention the fact that a loss to Alabama will render this season a complete failure for Auburn... they haven't done anything worth being terribly proud of yet, and if they lose the Iron Bowl, their season is over.

What does Alabama have to lose? A shot at a national title... that nobody expected them to have in the first place. There's no doubt that a loss to the Barn this year would be disheartening and disappointing... but for Tuberville and the Tigers the stakes are much larger.

No matter what happens next Saturday, Alabama is playing Florida for their 22nd SEC title. For Auburn, though, the whole season hinges on this game... win it, and the year really won't have been so bad. Lose it and you'll want to start forgetting the whole year ASAP.

It sounds to me like there's enough pressure to go around in this one.

FanPosts are just that; posts created by the fans. They are in no way indicative of the opinions of SBN and the authors of Roll Bama Roll.

I agree

I have seen the coaches at Auburn make some boneheaded calls; with the pressure to keep their delicate streak alive I can see them making calls and taking chances that will hurt them. I really, genuinely don’t see this being close.

One ‘intangible’ they forget is for the last 6 years, it has been like poking the large gorilla in the zoo wit a stick. When that door swings open and the gorilla is loose – and pissed – God help them.

Alabama judges its team by national and SEC titles. Auburn judges its team by how many times it beats Alabama. You tell me who the dominant team in the state is.

Bottom line:

Alabama is a better football team than Auburn. 99% of everything else is nonsense, including the “intangibes” line, the “nothing to lose” line, the “with a few lucky breaks” line, and every other angle the writers are dredging up to try to make it seem Auburn has a great shot at this game.

Nothing that has happened at all this season gives anyone the idea that Alabama isn’t the better team. There is no objective way of looking at this game and not seeing “Big Bama Win” as the headline. Can Auburn win? Certainly. But is it likely?? No. Don’t buy into anyone telling you otherwise.

Thoughts

This is the same rhetoric that unfortunately Alabama fans used to say when Auburn was doing well, and Alabama was sputtering along.

Alabama is the better team. We are going to be focused, healthy, and significantly better. I for one think this game will not be that close. I am taking the over.

BTW, how has Auburn’s coach needing a win worked out for him this year (Arkanasas, Georgia, Vanderbilt, Ole Miss, etc…).

So true...

They are all excited over there at Track em Tigers about their “performance” against UGA, but lets remember:

1. UGA is a team decimated by injuries and isn’t exactly playing their best football right now
2. At was a home game
3. The UGA defense is pretty bad
4. Burns did little, his recievers did much more
5. The UGA defense is still pretty bad
6. UGA started out #1 and have been destroyed twice this year, leaving them motivated by little and haunted by much

The fact is the game i watched on Saturday was pretty terrible. UGA looked like it was going through the motions and AU was holding on for dear life. How sad is it that you basically play a team thats phoning it in and you still get beat. That just has to be depressing.

BTW, Tubbs going for it on 4th and 2 was a boneheaded call. Not so much for not kicking the FG but for going for the endzone! You have a terrible QB that hasn’t exactly been lighting the world on fire and you go for the bomb. That call alone should get Tubbs fired.

When you are an Alabama fan you have to hate Auburn, I hate Tennessee because i want to.

My favorite stat

And I wish I could find the link again, is the debunked myth of “throw the records out the window”. The Iron Bowl is one of those rare rivalries where the team with the most talent, far and away, carries the day. This game, because it’s auburn’s defense, should be close…for a while.

I wouldn't say we have NOTHING to lose

But we do have less to lose than Alabama.

Things Auburn has to lose:

1. Win streak against Alabama
2. Potentially the head coach
3. Maybe some recruits

Things Alabama has to lose:

1. Undefeated season
2. Number 1 ranking
3. Potentially a shot at the national championship, even with a win over Florida (doubtful, but you never know)
4. And just imagine if the worst Auburn team of the past 10 years beats the best Alabama team of the past 10 years…you’ll never hear the end of it! (I won’t talk smack, because we’ve had a terrible year…but most Auburn fans will)

But your entire subordinate coaching staff is safe. Now, does he want to go to another school, is the question? I understand there’s some decent duck hunting in So. Carolina.

At least the offesive position coaches. We need to completely overhaul the offensive coaching staff, let someone bring his own guys in.

Your #1 – #3 for Alabama are all the same thing. At the end of the day, the ranking and record don’t matter except for what it gets you at the end of the season. Is anyone going to look back in ten years and lament 12-0 vs. 11-1? Not for the record alone… same with the #1 ranking. Nobody cares who’s at the top of the polls in the middle of the season, it only matters at the end.

  1. is irrelevant. Losing to Auburn always sucks and the relative skill of the teams has little to do with how the players see the game.

So, again, Alabama has one thing to lose: a shot at a national title. That’s it. And the vast majority of the team knows this won’t be their last shot at it, either.

Auburn, in addition to your list, is also fighting to get into a bowl game.

The folks in orange and blue have far, far more to lose than Alabama does.

by PeteHoliday on Nov 19, 2008 11:45 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yes...

I can’t bear the idea of losing a shot at Shreveport. That’s worse than actually losing the game…

The real indicator will be the line. Alabama should be about a 17 point favorite. If it comes out at only around 11, then maybe those boys in Vegas do believe in that whole intangibles nonsense after all…

by War Eagle Atlanta on Nov 20, 2008 9:55 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Or...

how about the fact that, as T. Kyle King has observed, Aubie is good enough on defense to play most teams close, just not good enough to beat anyone who’s not dreadful

by Stuck in the Plains on Nov 20, 2008 2:26 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Bama will win

the game because of talent. However, one thing on this “who has the most to lose” issue. If Bama would somehow lose they could still win the SEC and still play for the NC. I know the general thinking is that Bama must be undefeated to go to the NC game, but that may not be true. If Bama beats UF who could be ranked #1 (if TT loses) they could end up #2 in the BCS poll depending on what a few other teams do especially USC. A one loss SEC champion is going to be in the BCS discussion if there are no undefeated teams.

Bama’s only motivation for this game needs to be that it is playing Auburn. If both teams were 0-11 this would still be a big game.

by 5026 on Nov 19, 2008 11:26 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

I think it's all a matter of loss quality

For the sake of argument, let’s say the Big 12 South winner is in, with at most 1 loss. If Auburn beats Alabama, and then Alabama wins the SEC, they would be fighting with Penn St. and USC for the other spot. You have to ask, which team’s single loss was worst? Is a home loss to 6-6 Auburn better than a loss at Iowa or (potential Pac-10 champ) Oregon State? Of course, would either team have a win as impressive as beating Florida? A loss to Auburn would hurt Alabama’s NC chances, for sure…may not knock them out completely, but you’d be sweating it…

I agree with this, mostly, although I think if we lose to Auburn, our time is done. Combine losing to a very poor football team to the overwhelming desire of pundits and pollsters to WANT to drop Alabama because we haven’t been winning “pretty” and you end up with the perfect storm. If ‘Bama loses to Auburn, I wouldn’t be surprised if they dropped out of the top 10 in both human polls — far too much ground to make up in one win against Florida.

by PeteHoliday on Nov 19, 2008 11:47 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yep...

we have to run the tables. Pollsters are impressed by shiny points…magpies, they are.

by Stuck in the Plains on Nov 19, 2008 11:59 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Not necessarily...

Remember that a one loss LSU team played a 7-4 Arkansas team that beat them in OT the game before the SECC. Then the right teams lost and LSU went on to barely beat a very unimpressive UT team in the SECC. The rest is history. You don’t think that losing to AU, albeit by a close margin, then beating the media darlings (Florida) in the championship game still won’t get us into the Title game. It may take some help, but Penn State will be 3 weeks removed from their last game, and USC has Notre Dame and UCLA left. An SEC Championship will overshadow that remaining schedule IMO. The Big 12 Champion, if it comes out of the South, will be in the game, and they wouldn’t dare put two Big 12 South teams in the MNC game, or would they given the circumstances above?

Bottom line… beat the Barn and save the pollsters the headache…

The bottom line is right

But, I think a 1-loss B12S gets (puke) USC if we falter against the Barn but still knock off the media Wunderkind in Gainesville. (And, yes, I think USC rolls ND in a big way, and even if they squeak by UCLA, everyone will -OMGZ! decry the toughness of the rivalry).

Agree as well...

I agree that Bama is the better team. Sarah Jessica has done everything he has needed to do to keep on winning. I still think that the intangibles make a difference. Auburn has pressure on them as a team, but Bama is playing for much more than Auburn is. Tuberville will be back next year, I firmly believe that and I hope the players do as well. The pressure on getting to a bowl game is nothing like the pressure of making it to the NC Game.

Also Kodi Burns has done very little all year for us, no one is expecting him to win this game. Just like everyone in the state is expecting Sarah Jessica to win it for Bama. The pressure is always on the better team, playing at home. Why would this Iron Bowl be any different?

Over/Under

What is the Over/Under on most of the bloggers saying anything to anyone about anything in person.

It bugs me that anyone would request that they be called my all three names. From what I have read, JPW only wants to be called that. Not just John Wilson, Parker Wilson or just Wilson. Listen to any broadcast… never do they say a players entire name every single time. In our case it is Burns on the incompletion, or Lester is stopped for no gain.

If you are a War Damn Eagle, you can War Damn anything.

by WarDamnZach on Nov 20, 2008 7:21 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

So is your problem with it that it doesn’t conform to “sports norms” or that he creates a verbal burden for sports casters?

I teach and using all three names is becoming more and more common in the last few decades. He is NOT unique, just more visible.

by crimsongirl on Nov 20, 2008 8:48 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Eh....

I believe the only thing he said about his name was that his last name is ‘Wilson’, not ‘Parker-Wilson’. And he prefers ‘John Parker’, not just ‘John’.

You know, like David Lee Roth, it’s not ‘Lee-Roth’ and it’s not just ‘David’. What’s so hard about that?

Now that you guys have enlighted me, I understand. If his mother calls him John Parker, than that is his name. Although my mother only called me by my first and middle name when I was in trouble.

I just was pointing out that I have never heard of a player telling commentors in the interviews pregame how to call them by name.

The SECCG and the MNC are not as important this year...

…in the Process as winning the Iron Bowl. We’ve had an amazing year so far, but there is immense pressure to stop the streak and take back our home field. We are not “back” to Alabama football the way it’s meant to be until we accomplish this. If the unthinkable happens, ya’ll have my permission to just shoot me and put me out of my misery.

Bama will be focused....

Much to the dismay of the Aubie’s, I believe that CNS will have Bama completely focused on this game for many reasons. And that reason is because of what bamavicki said, that we are not back until the seasons ends and we’ve beaten au. With 2 weeks to prepare and not needing any external reasons to get the players or fans excited, CNS will hold nothing back come the 29th. I don’t predict scores, but as Clubber Lang said, “my prediction, PAIN”. And it will be on the au side, players, coaches and fans.

Well, are you gonna pull them pistols, or whistle dixie?

Point taken...

But this isn’t a scripted movie. The reality will set in, and I believe that emotion may help au somewhat in the beginning, but as has been the pattern of Bama’s games all year, they will wear down the tigers, the only question is how soon, and will the tigers completely quit, (see Clemson & Tenn).
I must say that I wonder if given the chance, will TT gamble in this game, or play conservative as he has pretty much all year (except for the boneheaded fourth and 2 call)

Well, are you gonna pull them pistols, or whistle dixie?

POD you are so very right.

I watched the au/ga game and the tigers, as much of the season, move the ball until they got inside the red zone. I swear that I saw Mike Shula on the sidelines. I don’t believe that the problem with au this year is the players, but the coaching. It is been as if they were play calling not to lose rather than to win. If the coaches got out the way and let the players play, this could be a very good game. But, I just don’t see TT letting that happen.

Well, are you gonna pull them pistols, or whistle dixie?
