This week's SEC Power Poll sees Florida expand it's lead over the Tide for first place. One thing I can't get straight in my head though....when Florida goes out and doesn't play their best, they lose to Ole Miss at home. When Alabama goes out and doesn't play their best, they beat Ole Miss at home. Shouldn't that count for something?

just gotta' feelin' man...
I know, I know….Heism@n guy, quarkbacks, OMGZ! BLOWING PEOPLE OUT for SIX WHOLE GAMES, but I still think we match up against the Gators better than LSU. Honestly. LSU and Alabama are golems. Dopplegangers. The same side of the same coin. We do well against spread teams. We don’t get beat with speed. We don’t play out of position. We are relentless. The last time the Gators saw that combination, they lost.

LSU
I guess to play a little devil’s advocate; if LSU and Alabama are of similar styles that does not necessarily bode well for us against Florida. They did beat LSU 51-21.
Still, I do agree with your basic premise. If a team is going to beat Florida it is going to have to be a great defensive team, that can control the clock and run the ball effectively. It is a must that we keep Florida’s offense off the field as long as possible.

We don't have a QB
that decides to give up 14 points and a secondary that’s continually out of position. Make no mistake, the Alabama game was the best shot that the Tigers have fired all season, but, with some preparation and some discipline the UF-LSU game is a different story.

Not that the Tigers win...
I should have reiterated that. I think, man-for-man, they still have far more talent and depth, but their coaching will ALWAYS be a detriment to that team.

I'm in the process of going through all the drive charts for UF and Bama....
…and from what I see of Florida, the old cliche of “don’t turn the ball over and don’t give up the big play” really applies to them. 24% of their scoring drives are three plays or less, and 38% of their scoring drives have started in opp. territory. A team with a fundamentally sound defense that won’t give up the big play in the secondary while being able to stop the run and pressure the QB with four or five guys and an offense that isn’t explosive but is at least efficient enough to stay on the field to keep them from good starting field position in the event of a punt matches up really well with them. That’s us.

I made this point
in select games a couple weeks ago, but it’s nice to here that it’s consistent throughout the season.

please create a substantive post on this topic
or show me where i can locate their drive charts. like you (and rugman11 re; the georgia and LSU games) said, it seems most of their offense comes form a special teams play or defensive play. i’d love to know the total percentages of TD’s scored directly by special teams, defense, and offense where they went less than 50 total yards and/or had less than 3 first downs on the “drive”…i swear to god, they’ve taken possesion inside the 5 yard line more often than at their own 20..
we wont be giving them those easy opportunities, we’ll make them earn each first down, and we will smash their f-in faces in…..
and the sec powerpoll is complete BS. where can i see the voter list so i can go troll/flame/kick sum @ss?!

Just remember that LSU, Georgia, and South Carolina said that too.

and we've lived up to that against everyone we've played...
unlike those teams.

And...
UGA is a fraud, SoCar is worse (e.g., getting smoked by Vandy), and LSU is just maddeningly inconsistent. We are none of the above.

Ditto Todd
I don’t understand it either but we win, win, and win 1 more and it all goes away. Then everyone will be how did Alabama pull this off?…..again. :)

It blows my mind..
that Florida has been proclaimed ‘unbeatable’ when they have already been beaten!!?!
I guess these ‘experts’ never learn- Florida is at least the third team this year to be proclaimed ‘unbeatable’. (USC, Texas) Actually fourth if you believe the hype of Texas Tech’s offense being unstoppable. Unreal!
by yellowhammer on Nov 19, 2008 8:26 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I'd actually believe...
….that TTU’s offense is unstoppable. No one has been able to play physical coverage with their receivers yet, but they have so many beyond just Crabtree, plus the added bonus of finally having a run game, that you almost have to outshoot them to win.
by Todd on Nov 19, 2008 8:47 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
and their defense can be REAL strong sometimes...

Maybe so..
Defensing TT’s spread is not an easy task, but for the espn ‘experts’ to just throw up their hands and say it can’t be done is BS. Same with Florida.
by yellowhammer on Nov 19, 2008 9:57 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Pratically unstoppable...
I think the key for TT this year is their offensive line is huge, experienced, and talented. Harrell had all the time in the world to throw against Texas. When we beat them in 2005 it was because we put that poor guy Hodges on his back the whole game.

people think that after Ole Miss Tebow converted his whole team to Christianity and now they are on a mission from God.

i friggin love our position here
what can be better than being #1 in the country and still being and underdog? we’ve had more good games than bad against florida, and i think that their showboating arrogance can be tempered by our “blue-collar” attitude. sorry folks, i have no stats to back up my feelings. i just want to beat those jort-wearing mofos.

FWIW
As an SECPP voter who went with Florida #1 this week, my reasoning is that this is a power poll. Strictly who would hypothetically beat who if they played today with head-to-head results coming into play only where applicable. (As this relates to the Ole Miss comparison: it won’t make me any friends here, I guess, but the yardage differentials for UF and ‘Bama vs. the Rebels were +118 and -23, respectively; it doesn’t change past results, but if we’re talking about predicting future ones … )
Power poll logic is not the logic behind normal polls, though, which should be (IMHO) strictly based on what teams have accomplished. So yeah, I’ve got UF #1 in the SECPP, but I’ll definitely second that anyone who ranks the Gators ahead of ’Bama or Texas Tech in their AP/Harris/Blog poll is wack, yo.
by JCCW Jerry on Nov 19, 2008 11:34 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I get your point, but when it comes to head to head matchups...
…how do you not take past performances into account? Ole Miss showed that Florida is vulnerable to teams that are physical up front on defense (like Alabama), while Alabama is better than Ole Miss in the secondary (where the Gators gained most of their yardage), while Ole Miss outgained them on the ground (and Alabama is a great running team).
by Todd on Nov 20, 2008 9:14 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Eh
I haven’t gone that deep into specifically matching up ‘Bama and Florida; suffice it to say I think the overall play of the two teams makes me think Florida’s the favorite and the scores alone of the Ole Miss games aren’t enough to change my mind.
I will say that ’Bama’s chances should not be dismissed as easily as the Florida media lovefest would imply they should be. I might have the Gators first, but it’s not clearcut or anything and I expect the SECCG will be very, very competitive.

cherry picking
UGA outgained Florida by tons in the first half; Bama controlled UGA. Florida let Arky only 17-7 (the margin of the UK-Bama game for most of the 2nd half) in the fourth quarter. In part depends on which game you look at.

Whats
really funny is that the same people voting in this blogpoll put UF #1 in the SEC but then turn around and say Alabama should be ranked #1 in the national poll because you “just can’t put a one loss team ahead of an undefeated team in the national poll, thats just silly.”
Am I missing something?
by Bens4vcobra on Nov 20, 2008 5:51 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
I think...
…Jerry answered your question. The power poll is based on who you think is the best team. It is obviously much more subjective. The blogpoll is based on what a team has done on the field (their resume). Whether anyone agrees with it or not, there is definitely an argument to be made that Florida is the best team in the SEC.
Again, it will not matter come December 6th. The best thing about this season for an Alabama fan is we control our own destiny. If we win out we are playing in the Orange Bowl. Now, we just need to go out and destroy Jerry’s mighty mighty Auburn weagles!

I thought a national poll...
was also based on who you think is the best team…

Power Poll = Beauty Contest
In the grand scheme, it doesn’t mean a thing just something to talk about…but as long as we’re talking about it, the ‘SEC Weekly Power Poll’ basically means who scored the most points that week and who espn tells everyone it is.
