Rivalry Round-Up

Star-divide

In the next three weekends, I will be attending three of the nation's top rivalries in college football. I've made plans to give a through report about my trips, and include some comparisons between the games. If there are any suggestions on what to look for, or compare, please leave some suggestions on the comments. The games are:

Michigan @ Ohio St

Auburn @ Alabama

Navy @ Army

I hope to give some insights on what exactly the Iron Bowl is best in, and some things that we might be lacking.

Who Cares!

Roll Tide!

Beat Army!

FanPosts are just that; posts created by the fans. They are in no way indicative of the opinions of SBN and the authors of Roll Bama Roll.

Rivalry Games

I think it’s cool that you’ll get to go to all three of these games! I don’t really watch the UM/tOSU matchup because it rarely means anything to us but I always try to watch the Army/Navy game because I think it is the greatest example of class in a rivalry game that I have ever seen. At the end of the game, when both teams stand at attention while the other service academy’s alma mater is played, it gives me chills. Also, regardless of who you are and where your loyalties lie, all those young men are “our boys” and we owe them a tremendous debt of gratitude.

Of course, the Iron Bowl is the greatest rivalry in college football, even when one of the teams is down. Being a part of that has always been special to me, although I never had the opportunity to go to one in Tuscaloosa (Bama still played it at Legion Field when I was in school). We’ve got two streaks to break this year (the awful 6-game and the 0 ’fer at home in Bryant-Denny), so this should be a special one for you (at least it better be!).

GO NAVY!!!

After having been stationed in Philly in the Navy back in the 80’s, I have attended 2 Army/Navy games and there is nothing truly like it. It is college football at its purest. I’m jealous, but you will love it.
My suggestion SC34 is to go just down the street heading north past the stadium to Oregon Ave and Pasyunk St (not sure of the spelling, its been 20 yrs) and try one of the best cheesesteak sandwiches you will ever have. Then on the other side of the street is a place that sells strombolli’s, and they are truly out of this world, once you get past the grease.
Sounds like a great time to be had, soak it in a please send pictures, look forward to your post.

I dont watch the Michigan OSU game

Never have, never will. It’s my own way of saying “F-you” to ESPN and their constant raving of how great that rivlary is and how the Iron Bowl is just another game. I refuse to help the ratings

with all due respect

the UA-AU game is not the biggest rivarly of all. In fact is far less than plenty of other games. Both teams have older rivals (UA-UT, AU-UGA). This is a game for the younger fans that grew up in the age of Bama sucking and AU on the rise. But as AU fall apart so to will the luster of this game. I want to beat them of course, but I am not worked up over it. They are in fact just auburn.

I wouldn't piss off the boys from Alabama . . .

With all due respect...

I think you’re just wrong. Oldest rival does not necessarily mean biggest rival. I am not one of the “younger” fans and no game means more to me than winning this game and I know plenty who feel the same way. Historically, it has never mattered if one team sucked or not in regards to the teams and fans getting psyched for this game. A quote from Coach Bryant to a group of boosters before an Auburn game: “Sure I’d like to beat Notre Dame, don’t get me wrong. But nothing matters more than beating that cow college on the other side of the state.”

agree totally with

bamavicki…..and I’m not a "younger’ fan either!!!

That's the paradox of success. The moment you stop to enjoy it, you are in trouble. You have to keep moving forward. It's not what you have done that's important. It's where you are going.

Using similar logic..

…Mississippi State is our biggest rival because we’ve played them more than anyone else.

by Nico2.0 on Nov 23, 2008 5:18 AM CST up reply actions

we have had this debate on rbr so many times

and every single time the polls have been split. I live in AL, I live on a street where everyone is an AU fan, I duck hunt with AU grads and to me that game still doesnt mean as much as beating UT. That rivarly was established when UT and UA where southern football and AU was a total after thought (back when they were Alabama Poly). To say AU is our biggest rival is to give them too much credit. How can your little brother be your biggest rival. They are undeserving.

Diagree

Even the Bear said nothing matters more than beating that cow college across the state. He’s certainly not a new Bama fan….

Your entitled to your own opinion...

But there’s nothing bigger than the Iron Bowl in my book. I live and deal with Aubs everyday, I only know two UT fans. Thats what makes the Iron Bowl so much more intense. It’s nieghbor vs nieghbor, brother vs brother. If we lose to UT, the only people I hear trash talk from is, you guessed it, the barners.
