A Review of Community Guidelines
Let's all have a look at the Community Guidelines / Membership Rules / Terms of Service again shall we:
This is primarily an Alabama blog for Alabama fans, but we talk about all kinds of stuff from football in general to the music and movies we like, so you're welcome to do the same. But in everything you comment on or post, remember, the anonymity of the internet does not give you license to be rude. Secondly, let's remember that there are a lot of different people that root for the Tide, and therefor a lot of different people are reading this blog. Profanity is occasionally acceptable, but for the most part we want to keep things PG-13 around here, and any sort of racist/sexist/homophobic or just plain hateful comments will be deleted immediately.
I gave up counting the terms of service violations over the past few days because I was getting bored with it. For what it's worth, the intended audience of this post is both Bama fans and non-Bama fans. A lot of the stuff going on around here lately (once again, on both sides of the aisle) would have gotten a lot of people banned from sites that are moderated more strictly. We try to be pretty laid back about stuff and let people police themselves, though we've had some doubts about the effectiveness of that lately. As a matter of fact, there was a post discussing some of this stuff about a week ago.
Let's talk some football!
FanPosts are just that; posts created by the readers of this site. They are in no way indicicative of the opinions of SBN and the authors of Roll Bama Roll.

Let me offer my apologies as well
For breaking any rules, helping to escalate the fire, or instigating anybody past the limit. I poke and jab as much as any of y’all but to be honest this is a top-notch Alabama website, and if I ever want to know what’s going on in Bama nation, I come take a look over here. And no, I’m not “obsessed with Alabama” or whatever it is I get all the time. Most, if not all, of my comments at this blog have been in the past two weeks (in other words, when it was Alabama on the schedule). So, to the moderators, keep up the good work, and in all seriousness, good luck this weekend. I don’t think you’ll need it much, but here’s to a good game.

I don't understand...
…why my AUBSESSION post was deleted. There was nothing rude or profane in it. If it got real active, I missed it. At around 4pm yesterday, I had less than 10 comments and none that I thought were out of line. By 8pm, it was gone. If you found something wrong with my Fan Post itself, I think a better idea might be to email an author and say something.
I’m really disappointed in these deletions. It’s like you don’t want to take the time to delete just the over the line comments – you just zap the whole thread. If you don’t have the time, then you really do need to get a mod in. A number of people spent a lot of their time posting on these threads. Yes, things got a little heated up, but most of it was GOOD and entertaining reading. Even some football was discussed. I feel like I just totally wasted my time. Why bother anymore? We’re all getting punished for the minority of the jerks.
You mentioned the post where some of these issues were discussed. Why didn’t you put this Guideline info up then, so if people didn’t abide by the rules, they wouldn’t be surprised when things were deleted? I also think you need to be more specific about certain things. Are abbreviations ok for profanity? “Gobble Gobble Mfers” is a perfect example and it was put up by Todd. Smack talk could be looked upon as being rude, but that is one of the fun things about blogging. Personal attacks are obviously not acceptable, but sometimes it’s just joking and nothing to get so upset over.
Anyway, these are just some of my thoughts and opinions on the matter. Take it for what it’s worth.

I can't speak for Nico...
…but I think your post was taken down because it was headed down that road, and even if not every post or comment is guilty of being over the line, the basic fact that seemingly every comment thread around here lately has turned into a free for all of crudeness has really made it harder for us to keep this blog irreverent and open for everyone else to have fun with it, while also keeping it family friendly enough that we aren’t getting comments like "I don’t tell my friends about the site because they would be offended by the comments." I mean, I had to delete a fanpost about a sexual act yesterday that was completely out of line, and yet there were five comments or so before I even saw it that were talking about how funny it was and encouraging that kind of behavior, and that just has to stop. I’m very much “if people don’t like what we do, they don’t have to read us” about what we choose to put out on the main page, but I also try my best to keep what I post and what I promote from the fanshots/fanposts as PG-13 as possible (and yes, that includes an occasional abbreviated dirty word when appropriate and/or funny, but not if there’s no reason for it and not so much that the site seems profane) because I understand that someone can choose not to read us based on one post that offends them. Believe it or not, we do try to grow the site and would love for this to be the central Alabama blog on the internet, but no matter how good the main page content is, if people visit the site and think “that’s just crude and perverse” on their very first visit, they’re not coming back, so for all of you regular commenters, please try and remember that you guys rule the comments sections and fanposts and we really need y’all’s help in making sure this site is welcoming for anyone who wants to visit.

Thanks...
…for that explanation, Todd. I understand it’s gotten harder lately to stay on top of so many threads that have a lot commenting. I did not single you out because I have a problem with profanity abbreviations. I don’t. I just think if you do it, the commenters will too, so it has to be clear if that’s ok. There have been too many F bombs dropped lately for no reason really. You shouldn’t have to do it, but I think you’re going to have to let people know they won’t be welcome here if they use certain language. I saw the fanpost you deleted and thought do I comment AGAIN to this person that I’m offended? Just a suggestion and again you shouldn’t have to do this, but you may want to email certain members of the site that repeatedly have problems with internet etiquette. Some of these same members do contribute good things here too. Hopefully these things get worked out because I don’t want to put up fanposts or comment on threads that are just going to get deleted.

The reason I mention the abbreviated dirty words...
….is because we don’t have a real problem with them either, to an extent. WTF? or mfer used in a humorous light is really just par for the course throughout most blogs and pretty well accepted at most blogs, but using “f*ck you” to attack someone else’s post or comment isn’t acceptable. Just because you abbreviated the curse, it doesn’t change the hateful intentions behind it. I know it’s a fine line at times, but it just goes along with being polite, friendly, and welcoming to all and not responding to any rival fans that happen to come over to stir up trouble with the same kind of nonsense and crudeness that is generally their calling card.

This blog is my homepage...
and I think ya’ll are doing an excellent job. I don’t like all the nastiness that has transpired over the last few days. I want the Tide to beat Auburn just as much as the next person, (I hope we WAX them) but I don’t need to get ugly about it, and I don’t particularly want to read any hate speech about it either. Keep it fun, upbeat, and irreverant as always, and, in me, you’ll always have a loyal reader.

I agree with you, Queen!
I was on a couple of days ago and had to leave. Not because of the language, but because of the general nastiness. I, too, hope we beat the crap out of Auburn, but I also believe in talking smack after the game not before. I’ve been burned too many times.

Where are these community guidelines posted?
I went to look at them in the Welcome guide and was taken to the SB Nation page. The only relevant information I found here was “…Each blog sets its own guidelines for you to follow…..Each community moderates itself…” So, I came back to the RBR page to find them. They aren’t here, or I cannot find them. Was it something I put a check-in-the-box upon registering for the site and cannot pull up now? Am I simply overlooking it?
Maybe this is PART of the reason for the recent confusion. There are rules that are the members are expected to follow, yet they are difficult to see. While most of them may seem common courtesy and etiquette, they still should be visible in case someone has a momentary lapse in judgement. For example, that one week a year that they are on a sports blog of their FAVORITE team playing their most HATED rival and they are very PASSIONATE fans and haven’t beaten said rival in, say 6 years, and it looks like this year they have a great chance? The rules being up in their face might be a sobering reminder that they have to maintain their composure. It would also serve as a reminder to visitors from other blogs, that certain behaviors will not be tolerated by them either!
BTW, I have to say that someone is always going to be offended by SOMETHING. Gosh-darn. I just offended someone, somewhere! My grandmother would have told you it was another way to say GD, then she would slap you. I know there has to be a line, so I guess everyone just needs to be able to SEE it.

Maybe we can make a separate page or box...
…for it near the top of the page by the email addresses, but the guidelines for every individual site on SBN appear when you click that you want to join the particular site. When you actually click to join, you’re saying that you agree to those terms.
We’ll probably revise them and repost them on the main page at some point in the near future just so everyone is on the same page.
I agree with you that everything has the potential to offend someone, but the amount of email complaints we’ve been getting have been rising steadily so we feel it’s something we need to address. As Todd mentioned, we do want the site to grow (and it’s already grown beyond what we ever imagined), but that potential is going to be limited if it’s a chaotic free for all around here. We’re not talking about changing the nature of the site or asking anyone to change their personality because we love the folks around here and we’re extremely grateful for all of the people that spend time here and want to read what we write (and we’re grateful that they write things as well), we’re just saying that we all need to tone it down a bit.
I don’t want anyone to get the impression that I’m trying to be “holier than thou” about this, because I’m the first one to admit that I have been guilty of it as well. This whole thread is just meant as kind of a reminder to all of us, authors and community members alike.
I can’t speak for Todd or OTS here, but the thing that really makes me want to push the delete button on something is when people stop talking about the issue at hand and start attacking each other. This is a lot more likely to happen during rivalry game weeks and we can certainly appreciate the passion those games bring out in people (on both sides.) I’m not talking about the good natured stuff like when we all make fun of Todd’s bad taste in women or my supposedly weird taste in music or when we have a bit of fun and good natured jabbing with rivals like Joel from RockyTopTalk or Richard from AndTheValleyShook or Jerry from JCCW, I’m talking about the vitriol that gets going between people that don’t know each other. Basically, I don’t like see a thread go down the “message board road” with trolling, flaming, insults etc. Above all, I appreciate respectful discussion and don’t want to see us get into another “blog fight” after what happened earlier this year. I’m all about debate, passionate disagreement, dissenting opinions, contrary points of view, etc. I just like it to be as civil as possible.

I really do think posting the guidelines is a good idea.
I didn’t read them. =) I don’t think that I am guilty of breaking the rules, and if you look at my comments on the post you referenced, I don’t necessarily condone profanity and name calling. (It feels like you have lost the fight when you resort to that) I just feel that if the majority DO enjoy it, who am I to complain? Especially if I am actually enjoying the majority of the posts! However, if you are receiving more complaints through email, it might actually be time to take some kind of action.
I will start with a rec of this post to help keep it up, and maybe more people will decide to post their displeasure PUBLICLY. Maybe some of the people posting just don’t realize they are offending anyone? There were hundreds of comments and no one said a word about being offended by the profanity. Possibly it was difficult to post in the heat of the moment, but this seems like a pretty “safe” thread in which to voice an opinion.

Dang
I dropped the F-bomb a couple of times in that thread, so, yeah, my bad. But I do think posting the rules and guidelines is a good idea, even though it should be common sense. I think the issue in my thread (not talking about Vicki’s, because there was nothing bad going on in there) is that the Aubies kept pushing everyone’s buttons. Yeah, it’s just “OMG TEH INTERNETZ” but when you get a bunch of those people who’s home blog has absolutely no control measures, things escalate. That is by no means an excuse, but it would be much easier if SBN as a whole had some sort of general guidelines for this sh*t.
Anyway, let’s get through tomorrow and then we won’t have to worry with this issue until I post “This Is War: II” next season!
I KEED!

When i spelled Vicki’s name wrong, then BRO7 posted his name, which still has me confused.

He DID change it AFTER the IB!!
That is a pretty risky move, IMO! I have a text message I am not deleting for the same reason, until after the season! I am just not taking any chances. Guess we know who to blame if things go badly this Saturday…………..

I have to say...
…I’m very thankful for this one. Hated the last one. The Radiohead Bear always reminded me of Mickey Mouse ears, but I knew it was you. Plus this description of the band here – http://www.wikiality.com/Radiohead
cracks me up.
“Radiohead is a subversive foreign band dedicated to the downfall of America and the American capitalist music industry. They play horrible beepy "music” that is often used by zoologists to inspire the mating of chipmunks and other rodents."
