Why Bama will win the SEC Championship

Mark Schlabach tells us why he thinks that Alabama will beat Florida on Saturday.  Although he does allude to the fact that Harvin may be out, he fails to mention that Florida may also be without two of its defensive line starters, as mentioned in this article by CBSSports:

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- No. 2 Florida could be without two defensive linemen against top-ranked Alabama in the Southeastern Conference Championship Game Saturday.
Matt Patchan has a torn medial collateral ligament in his left knee, defensive line coach Dan McCarney said Sunday night, and the freshman won't play again this season. Patchan won't have surgery, but probably won't return until after spring practice.
Patchan, who has seven tackles and 1½ sacks in 10 games this season, hurt his knee last weekend against The Citadel.
Defensive tackle Brandon Antwine, who missed the first five games of the season while recovering from back surgery, sprained a knee in the second half Saturday at Florida State. Coach Urban Meyer said Antwine is "probably doubtful" against the Crimson Tide.
"He's not moving around at all," Meyer said.
The good news for Florida is Lawrence Marsh, the player Antwine replaced in the starting lineup against the Seminoles, should be full-go Saturday.
"He was 70 percent (against FSU)," Meyer said. "He'll be 100 percent (against Alabama)."
Marsh, a sophomore defensive tackle who started the first 11 games, has 21 tackles and three sacks this season. He sprained the MCL in his left knee on the first play against The Citadel.

Another point of note: Don't put too much into Florida's 44.2 points per game.  Although impressive, that average comes from playing little better than average defenses.  Florida's schedule boasts an average defensive ranking of 46 out of 120.  Now this is nothing to turn your nose up at, but when you are the AP #2 team in the nation who runs an effective spread offense, coupled with the speed they possess, this outcome should be commonplace.  Lastly, the best defense (statistically) that Florida has seen to date is non other than Ole Miss, and I believe we all know the outcome of that.

This is Big Boy football, ladies and gentlemen.  We should expect nothing less in the SEC Championship than the best two teams in the nation battling it out.  And in my opinion, this is THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME.  ROLL TIDE!

I heard one of the commentators say that Florida is successful because the parts of the team are successful whereas BAMA has a successful TEAM because all the parts work together. It’s simply a matter of Florida’s parts not being equal to or greater than the sum of BAMA’s.

oh my, I feel for you.

Bamagirl, please allow me to be the first one to break your pretty little bama heart. In your 30 short years of life, you have never seen the kind of beat down that your poor little crimson tide is going to have to endure on Saturday night. This game isn’t even going to be close. Florida 52, Bama 13, Uh oh, boom goes the Tide’s hopes and dreams in one game. Don’t worry though, New Orleans and the Sugar Bowl will be a good game in Jan.

spock "dethroned"????

I didn’t realize that the Mighty gators had been put on a throne as of yet, but since u brought it up, I do believe that would be great spot for them. All year long, Bama has gotten sooooo much media love it is unreal. Ever since the first game of the year you all played against a very mediocre Clemson. This Saturday night, America will find out who the true King of the SEC is, and who the real Queen is as well. I look forward to watching Alabama Man cry over a lost opportunity at a National Championship not to mention the SEC crown. I can’t wait to see Nick SATAN having a total meltdown on the sideline. Since when did he become GOD in the SEC? He is the most crass, pompous, pious piece of trash coaching, not just in the SEC, but in the whole country. He makes Charlie Wies look humble and gracious. Fl still hasn’t forgotten the piling on that you guys did in Tuscaloosa a couple of years ago. You remember, the one in which a future #1 pick in the NFL got his stick broken in one of the most horrific broken bones ever to be shown on live t.v.. Because of your coaching staff, wanting to run it up, you cost that young man millions of dollars. Hell, will he even walk again? You got bad karma coming to you. We will never forget that game. I feel terrible for the receiver whose life you ruined, but u ALABAMA FAN, are going to get the crap kicked out of your team. Don’t think that Tim Tebow doesn’t know about that, and don’t think that any Gator has forgotten that. Guess what is coming.PAYBACK.

over the past 6 games the gators have played, the starters haven’t even seen half way through the 3rd quarter. Go back and watch some tape, when you have your most hated rival fsu, and with 9:24 left in the third quarter and our second string qb is in the game, I apologize if he puts up points. what do you want Florida to do, march the water boy out onto the field.

We've played a...

…non-scholarship walk-on QB this year for a bit actually.

I’m one of the few people out there that doesn’t have much of a problem with running the score up if the backups are in. You train them all year how to do the job and then ask them not to do it? I disagree with that philosophy.

Regarding the Prothro injury, no Shula shouldn’t have been throwing long bombs with his starters in up 31-3 with nine minutes left in the game, but Urban Meyer probably shouldn’t have called two timeouts in the last minute of the Georgia game while up 49-10 either. I know that didn’t result in a score, but it wasn’t very “sporting” either if that’s what we’re talking about.

i thought that y'all got your payback

the next year? maybe not.

So Florida hasn’t gotten any media love? Give me a break. They’ve talked about y’all more than they’ve talked about Bama this year. Chris Low, Herbstreit, Maisel, etc, have all been praising and worshipping Florida for the last month, so I’m not sure what you’re talking about.

And about Prothro. Yes, Shula probably should have taken him out earlier in the game, but I personally think that the injury could have probably happened any time during the game. It appeared to me that he probably hurt it on the first punt return in the game, and then the bad landing (caused by highly unnecessary pass interference on Florida’s part) was what caused the break. But he doesn’t seem to have any ill will towards the school, so I’m not sure why you do.

You guys lose to Ole MIss at home and have to run the score up on other teams to make your yourselves feel better. Oooooooh, Citadel! Oooooooooh, South Carolina!

Dan, go back to gatorland. YOu can’t even talk smack right. Your insults are demeaning to the university and above and beyond what we would call a friendly rivalry. Half the shit you are talking about is exagerrated, and the other half is straight bullshit. Take your blanket, and your pacifier, thanks for playing, now go back to gatorland and give Tebow that nice, big, slow, BJ that you Florida fans and the media commentators have been waiting so long for.

Actually, it would be possible. Just unlikely.

OT #3, tied 25-25. Bama scores first and gets the 2-point conversion to go up 33-25. Florida scores a touchdown to pull within 33-31. Bama picks off the 2-point attempt and returns it for 2 points of their own. Final score – 35-31.

Im not so confident as everyone else

Thats not to say i don’t think we win but its not going to be easy. UF has a really good defense and speed all over the place. I rewatched the Auburn game and there were quite a few times where our defenders were out of position when defending the pass, Burns was just so bad/ scared he didn’t see they were open. I still think we win the game but its going to be a dog fight.

we've gotta...

work together as the TEAM we are… all aspects have to be on their top game. besides, we’ve got Arenas on spec team and when he gets a good block, he’s up the field before the other team knows what’s hit them. As for UF’s speed, I’m fairly certain Saban is going to address that in practice this week… making sure the defenders are where they need to be to stuff UF at the line of scrimage.

by bamagirl78 on Dec 1, 2008 2:24 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

If you get a chance to watch any highlights of the UF/Miss game...

you’ll see that Ole Miss’ defensive line was in Florida’s backfield at will, and for once, Tebow looked human. He slowly lost his confidence in his passing game and even in his one yard plunges for the first downs that he had like a 99% success rate in. I personally like Tebow a lot, I respect the man for what he stands for and the amazing athlete that he is, but this week he’s the enemy, and he needs to get popped in the mouth by the collective cocktail of McClain, Reamer, Hightower, and Anders. If he does get hit (and it will take multiple clean hits), he will once again lose a bit of his confidence. BLITZ ALL DAY, THEN BLITZ SOME MORE! One reason they killed FSU is that Tebow had ALL DAY. BLITZ!That’s the gameplan, make it happen.

if we blitz

When you are an Alabama fan you have to hate Auburn, I hate Tennessee because i want to.

by bammer on Dec 1, 2008 2:33 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

It's going to be worse if he's got time...

Tebow does not force bad passes. He’s got 2 interceptions this year, TWO. If we don’t blitz, we likely don’t get to him. If we don’t get to him, he’ll sit back in the pocket for 5/6 seconds if he feels like it. You give Percy Harvin or Lewis Murphy 6 seconds to get open, and I guarantee you they make it happen, double covered or not. And Tebow’s 65% completion percentage says he can get it to wherever it needs to go.

We blitzed AU in the standard 3-4 defensive way. It was a half hearted attempt, at best, by Steele to hit Kodi in the mouth a few times just for fun. We didn’t have to do it to win the ballgame, and everyone knew it. I even said at one point when I saw Reamer go in, “That’s just mean…”

Saturday, though, it’s gotta be their job. BLITZ that joker from all sides, and in some cases, bring the house just to let him know we’re here. But that’s what Bama’s gameplan has GOT to be.

I'll go along with that...

…when he’s on the field, but also one of the keys is just to keep him off the field as much as possible. Our offense needs to run, run, run, get 1st downs and run some more. Keep moving the chains and eating the clock.

I don't like Tebow's passes.

Inside 17 yards, he’s lethal. And, he does throw a pretty accurate deep ball. BUT, the deep pass he throws just hangs up forever and ever. As deep as our safeties play (when not blitzing) or head-f****** opposing qb’s, that is a definite advantage. PROVIDED, that we don’t let the burners get waaaay behind the coverage. Gameplan: shut down the run with minimal or no extra defenders, hit Tebow…he hates to be blitzed, don’t kick to Brandon James, and play sound at the corner spot…we bite waaaay too easy on the down and up and fake curl.

Respond to my friend, an avid Florida fan

My friend sent me this earlier and I see a lot things that can be argued. What do you guys think?

I do think you guys are taking this game seriously and I know the Bama players are as well. As to the comment regarding the “secret” defense see my first response. You are right, everyone knows how Saban likes to run the ball and control the clock however, I think that will be your end game. I know Bama will bring the heat against Tebow and the offense but you guys do not match up w/ our speed. The best defense in the SEC was USCe and we completely shredded it. Bama’s offense starts w/ the run and that is what our defense does the best, (see Miami, LSU, UGA, USCe & FSU) stopping the run. UF doesn’t normally put an extra man in the box, we haven’t needed to, nor do I think we will against Bama. Bama’s RB’s are not better than UGA’s and we didn’t add an extra man then and we shouldn’t have to this coming weekend! Everyone also knows JPW cannot win the game on his own, especially when the D is bringing heat, he buckles and isn’t a
playmaker like Tebow. Although, he may have the game of his life and completely destroy our D but I just don’t see it happening.

USC? Down 24-0 to Clemson? The BEST defense you saw was Ole Miss, and that worked out pretty well for the visitors eh? That said, the best defense you’ve seen is going to smack you in the damned jaws for about 45 plays on saturday. Also, he’s thrown 25 TDs against only 2 picks. He throws a nice deep ball, regardless of whether or not you think it hangs in the air too much. Everyone raves about Stafford’s skill set, arm strength and great throwing motion. I see 9 picks. We lost to Ole Miss because we turned the ball over too much (3 fumbles). We let Ole Miss stay in the game and they made us pay repeatedly and beat us.

The most important thing for Alabama to do is to score first and not fall behind. Florida has trailed only once the entire year – of course Ole Miss. We all know the result. We are not used to playing behind. We have jumped out early and then poured it on.

I am looking forward to a classic on Saturday!

We wont have to blitz too much...

Our front four can contain that off-left-guard stuff pretty well. And, the quick screens are no avail, just ask, I don’t know, anyone we’ve played against. Too fast for that. The spread is predicated on matchups and getting playmakers open in space…there won’t be much space, nor much time. I expect a lot of misdirection, draws, shovel passes, etc., but the screen and quick slants are off limits. If you want to win this one, guys, you’re going to have to do it the good ole’ fashioned way…take it from us.

And, yes, it WILL be one for the ages a la 1992 and 1994 (different results obviously, but hellacious games).

you LET Ole Miss stay in the game?

I think Ole Miss stayed in the game because they wanted to win, not because y’all let them. That’s arrogance.

by jsholt969 on Dec 2, 2008 12:09 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I guess

if you consider Ole Miss “wanting” us to lay the ball on the ground for them, then you are right.
It is not a good idea to judge us by our performance in the Ole Miss game. The team that lost that game is gone. They were the arrogant Gator team that thought they were entitled to victories, much to the tune of DantheG8tr’s post above. This new team – the one that has been destroying opponents left and right since the Ole Miss game, is focused and goes 100 MPH on every play. That loss to Ole Miss helped us more than any victory could. It humbled the Gators and made our team hungry again.

Also, Tebow is not a guy you can intimidate. Despite not having his best game, he still threw for 300+ yards and a TD, and ran for 2 TDs against Ole Miss. We fumbled our first 2 possessions in the 2nd half, which led to 10 Ole Miss points, and along with some defensive failures, ultimately led to our defeat.

I can't speak for everyone else

But in no way do i think the team we will face on Saturday is the same that played Ole Miss. They are playing at a much higher level. I do feel that we are also playing our best football. Our defense is getting better with every game and the O-line is just a beast. LSU and UGA have nothing on our line and you guys will be surprised on how well they play.

As for Tebow, i don’t think he’s that great of a passer. Is he dangerous, sure. But does he scare me, no. What does scare me is if your speedy backs get one on one with some of our bigger LB’s. If Urban can create those matchups, then watch out. It won’t take an amazing QB to make that throw.

When you are an Alabama fan you have to hate Auburn, I hate Tennessee because i want to.

by bammer on Dec 2, 2008 10:05 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Tebow not that great of a passer?

416/629 5943 yards. 62 TDs. 9 INTS.
Those are Tebow’s career passing statistics – he would top the Alabama record book in virtually every passing category, despite only starting 2 years.
That doesn’t even include his 44 rushing TDs (3 better than the Alabama all time record).

Man, what does it take to impress you?

Tebow is a phenominal passer – maybe not by NFL style standards, but as a college QB, he is nothing short of amazing. His TD to INT ratio is ridiculous. How he is not “that great of a passer” is beyond me.

by skigator93 on Dec 2, 2008 10:50 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I have eyes

His stats are great. He also plays in a a system in which a QB should thrive. I have never seen a QB in a spread system that didn’t have big numbers, well besides Burns.

As a pure QB he takes a back seat to other guys. I would take Stafford, Colt, Bradford, Harrell and Sanchez over Tebow. Now as a guy to run Urbans system, i would take Tebow over anyone else. But i wouldn’t take him if i needed a pure passer.

When you are an Alabama fan you have to hate Auburn, I hate Tennessee because i want to.

by bammer on Dec 2, 2008 11:15 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

If it's so easy

How come no other QB in the history of college football has put up those kinds of numbers? There are plenty of spread offenses out there and plenty of schemes that inflate QB numbers (see the Big 12, i.e. Arena League). Everyone said that last year regarding his rushing numbers and TDs. Yet he’s the only one who has ever been able to put up anything close to those numbers.

I don’t care what type of system you are in – nobody matches his TD to INT ratio and that has nothing to do with a system. It has to do with descision making and ability to see the field and read defenses. A QB that doesn’t throw picks is valuable. I would be willing to bet that half his INTs went off Riley Coopers’ hands.

You can have Stafford, Colt and Bradford, etc. I’ll take Tebow and take my chances with him. When the ball is at the 2 yard line and you have a real defense in front of you, those guys can’t plow it in.

Also, can we just take Stafford off that list? He is the most overrated QB in college football. For 3 years I have heard about his inlimited potential, arm strength, quick release. etc etc etc. All I see when I watch him play are terrible picks, overthrown wide open receivers and throws behind wide open guys who would otherwise score if they didn’t have to stop and dive backward for the errant pass.

by skigator93 on Dec 2, 2008 11:42 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Because

No other team in NCAAF history has the Gator’s talent while simultaneously running that offense. Seems pretty simple to me…that and the Citadels of the world. I kid about the last part.

by Stuck in the Plains on Dec 2, 2008 12:43 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

If that is the case, then I am really pumped

Because under your theory, we’ll just insert the next guy into the “system” and continue to score 50 points per game for as long as Meyer and the spread is in town! I guess you predict a decade of pure Gator dominance?

by skigator93 on Dec 2, 2008 2:55 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

No one is bashing on Tebow

So stop being sensitive. Trust me we all think hes a great QB that deserves all the respect in the world but we don’t have to be in love with him.

And no i don’t think you can just plug anyone into the system. As i have heard about 1000 times, Myer has said that Tebow is the perfect guy for his system. Not the only guy, just the perfect guy.

That's the key, SKI...

Blitz, make him run, and hit him in the mouth. This was Ole Miss’ gameplan. Tebow was not used to getting hit as much as he did that game, and as a result, he looked like a bobble head out there midway throught he third and all of the fourth quarter. He’s an amazing athlete, but he human. If he gets hit a couple of times, his confidence will be shaken. If he plays the way he capable of, Bama will have a very tough time. Bama’s D has to make Tebow doubt himself and doubt that his line can protect him, and if they can do that, he’ll fumble and make bad decisions, much like he did against Ole Miss. Two of those fumbles you speak of were his, and we all know that’s uncharacteristic.

I too, am looking forward to this game, should be one for the ages.

Great article by Scarbinsky this morning

wow. Did I just say that out loud?

The link says Kirby and Muschamp have been ‘chatting’. I remember when I thought Florida was going to route Auburn that year and the D locked and loaded on the Gators. And our defense is better than that one.

I will say that for all the talk and bravado, this is why they play the game. I for one am respectful of Florida and what they have accomplished but intimidated or afraid? Forget about it.

Alabama judges its team by national and SEC titles. Auburn judges its team by how many times it beats Alabama. You tell me who the dominant team in the state is.

its gonna come down to how bama plays on offense. they HAVE to move the ball effectively and eat time of the clock and keep floridas offense off the field. when bamas d is out there though, they HAVE to stuff EVERYONE at the line and disrupt the play. its definately gonna be the offense that has to win it for us though…they have to have their best game of the season and put up points and no turnovers. i feel for you dude

i’m 26 and my first bama memory was winning a huge game oven penn st in like 88 and the iron bowls of the late 80s and early 90’s. i distinctly remember getting our asses kicked by florida to start the year one season(91) and being very upset, we didn’t lose a game for another 2 calendar years. i remember meeting gene stallings with my brother and dad, BAMA was playing louisville in the fiesta bowl and they were practicing at a local CC. we watched practice, got some autographs, and eventually coach stallings came over to chat w/ my dad. it was awesome. my dad eventually asked asked him, not expecting an honest answer i’m sure, if he thought we’d win the upcoming game. “not if we keep on practicin’ like this” he said, my bro and i were stunned, we spoke up, “you’re kidding right?” “no sirs” he replied, “we havent got one good practice in since we been here. the boys are about to find out somethin” and sure enough we got our asses kicked….

it all came to an end though. in 92, we made our way through a tough regular schedule, only to wind up in the title game with the dreaded gators (the same team beat us the year prior, and the only team to do so since), we were surely in for a battle. but in the end, florida couldn’t match up with us, and we prevailed. next, they pitted us against some flashy media darling team that everyone said would destroy us, and of course we destroyed them instead.

i think we’re about to see history repeat itself

growing up I would stay with my Grandma most of the time and was used to Screaming Uncles and Cousins watching Bama play. I guess Mean Gene is the first coach I can remember and I was 10 years old the last time we played for a National Championship. I was at my Grandma’s house that entire season watching every game. The cool thing is that my grandma adopted 3 of her great grandsons last year after thier mother died. Now they have been watching every game up there this year. I think history repeats itself because one of the 3 is named after me, Brandin, is exactly ten years old, and Bama’s in the same position with a shutout to Auburn and facing Florida in the SECCG to decide who goes to the NC game. Now that is some scary unusual coincidences.

My 2 Cents (For what it is worth)

We will win because:
1) We ground and pound them and keep the ball away from their offense. We score 27 points. 17 in the first half.
2) On defence, we put a spy on Tebow (probably Rolando). If he passes Rolando rushes, if he runs Rolado hits him in the mouth. He goes where Tebow goes. We play man on WR and our Safeties don’t let anyone get behind them. They score 24 points. Only 7 in the first half.
We celebrate and move on to Miami and bust OK bubble.

by FloraBama on Dec 3, 2008 8:45 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

not likely

We’ve scored 160 in the first quarter alone this season. To think you are going to hold us to 7 first half points is just wishful thinking.

Also, just a note – the spy you have assigned to hit Tebow in the mouth isn’t even bigger than Tebow, and I would be willing to bet, not as strong. Better assign 2 spies.

My math is a little fuzzy, but...

6’4"- 255lbs > 6’3"- 240lbs

Plus, lets just say Rolando McClain is give up 20lbs to Tebow (making him 220). Newton’s Law of Inertia says that a 220 lb linebacker running a 4.4-40 will destroy a 240 lb quarterback standing still in the pocket.

Also...

This video makes it look like he would love to stay in the pocket a good bit of the time, however his line cannot block for him, so I’ll agree with you that he does not sit in the pocket, but it’s not by choice. Pay particular attention to 29 seconds in, 35 seconds in, 57 seconds in, and 1:14 in (I quit watching after that). He would have loved for a pocket to develop.

OK, watched the whole thing, just for the hell of it...

and he rolled out on the last play of that clip, and that was it. So stepping up in the pocket roughly 11/12 times makes him, in my opinion, a quarterback that sits in the pocket a lot.

I'll be honest

I dont know anything about any of the linebackers from florida, so i cant blame you for not knowing about McClain. But if there is anything in the world you have erred in saying it was that comment about mcclain, if there is one person in college football that i would want spying tebow, its mcclain. the guy is just a man. and i have heard all about how strong tebow is, and seriously, im not taking ANYTHING away from tebow because he is a freak of nature. But dont come on here and try to talk about something you dont have any knowledge about.

by tidefanstuckatlsu on Dec 3, 2008 12:17 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Well, allow me to introduce you

to Brandon Spikes. Florida linebacker and another Butkus finalist. He has 80 tackles to McClain’s 82 despite playing one less game due to injury. He also has 4 INTs to McClain’s 1, with 2 returned for TDs to McClain’s 1. You see, we have a McClain too, and Brandon Spikes would be no more able to spy on Tebow and shut him down than McClain will. Plus, before you take your best player out of the mix to just chase Tebow around, you might consider leaving him in the middle to slow down Demps & Rainey, before they get a couple steps and blow by your secondary.

Butkus award finalists don’t scare us – LSU has 2 of them and we hung 50 on them.

I’m sorry if you don’t think I know what I’m talking about, but you aren’t the first team’s fan that has claimed they can stop Tebow and hit him in the mouth.

by skigator93 on Dec 3, 2008 3:30 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Funny,

because either Tebow is the Flash, or I am pretty sure we have seen McClain “run around” Cody in 11 games this year and has made plays. He has tackles, for sure, but he is the captain of that defense and he sets the other players up to make plays, very similar to Cody. Tebow MIGHT make it past McClain, but he’s gonna get popped by Hightower, or Reamer, or Johnson, or Fanney, or Deaderick, or Chapman or….well, you get the picture.

I know all you Gator fans think Tebow is the second coming of Jesus Christ, but he is stoppable.

Well

I guess all those guys could bring him down…together.
Everyone always thinks they are going to smash Tebow. But after 2 plus seasons, have you ever really seen him get knocked backward by a jarring hit?

Me neither.

I’m just joking about Tebow being superhuman, but he is unlike any QB you have faced.

by skigator93 on Dec 3, 2008 4:50 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Look...

I’m not trying to start a pissing contest with you, and as I’ve said before, I have a ton of respect for Tebow, on and off the field, but he’s capable of being solo tackled. It doesn’t take an army to bring him down. But I’ll tell you that I haven’t seen a better gang tackling team than Bama this year, so if that’s what it takes, it’ll get done. He’s not gonna run over our defense. No, we probably won’t knock him out of the game, but I anticipate a few good hits on him, and we’ll see how he reacts from there.

Wow

So you no longer like him as a player or person because of my comments about him?

If you don’t want to hear his name, you may not want to be in the Dome on Saturday afternoon.

The things I say about our players and their superhuman abilities are just in jest. Don’t hate a guy because he is a great player and is animated because of his pure love for the game. Hate a player because he used a deceased girl’s credit card just after she was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident. You should admire good players – the types of names you never want to hear against is Jamar Hornsby. He is a bad egg.

AND...

I really don’t mind leaving Reamer, Hall, Hightower, and Arenas (in the star) to stay back and cover anyone in the country, including Demps and Rainey. They can hold their own back there.

That being said, I think it’s a little hasty to limit Florida to 7 points in the first half. I’d give them at least 14. I don’t think Florida is going to score nearly the points they have in recent weeks, but we don’t need to fool ourselves into thinking they are just another Tennessee, LSU, or Georgia. They are far better than that, so we’d better be prepared for it to be close (though I would like nothing better than a 35-3 massacre).

The other side of that coin, though, is not thinking that BAMA is another Tennessee, LSU, or Georgia. We’re not, and we can hit hard. Butkus awards aside, this is not about individual players when it comes to Alabama football. It’s about teamwork, and we don’t need stars at every position to shut someone down. We simply need to have people at every position who know exactly what their role is. We do, and I have a ton of trouble seeing Florida hanging more than 30 points on us.

Bottom line: both teams are facing a challenge they have not yet faced in this game. Each side needs to respect the other greatly. When all is said and done, however, my money is on Alabama’s defense.

dude, do me a favor and go to ESPN.com College Football

then go to Teams → Florida →Roster.

No one new has been added to your roster since Ole Miss. Do you know what that means? That means that the Florida Gators ARE THE SAME EFFING TEAM!

YOU ARE STILL PRONE TO THE MISTAKES YOU MADE IN THAT GAME! No argument you give about the Gators “change” can supersede that fact!

If you guys don’t put us away with your offense VERY QUICKLY, you are in for a long night. Make no mistake about it, we ARE going to run all over your D LINE and we WILL eat up the time of possession. You simply will not be able stop our run.

All that established, the issue is whether the Gators will get key turnovers and take advantage of what our defense gives them. How Bama reacts/handles that will be the key to the game.

Skigator you have been respectful here, but distastefully arrogant. Bama will quickly slap that arrogance off the face of Florida Saturday afternoon.

by brandonh on Dec 4, 2008 1:43 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

^^^What he said...

and speaking of “key turnovers” I’ve seen where since the Ole Miss game, Florida has averaged 14+ points off of turnovers. Hopefully, that’s 14 points they will not be able to depend on Saturday.

"There's a lot of blood, sweat, and guts between dreams and success" - Coach Bryant

by TopDaddy on Dec 4, 2008 1:48 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Distastefully arrogant?

Please dude. Just because you don’t like the facts, doesn’t make them untrue. I have never once said “we are going to run you out of the Dome” or anything of the sort. All I have done is rebut some of the arguments made by some of your cohorts, which insinuate that Bama is simply going to have their way with us and that we don’t play big boy football, etc. etc. etc.

Keep pointing to Ole Miss. That was a long time ago. You are right that the players names have not changed, but if you will look at the numbers, you will see that after that game, we went from a team that played down to its opponents level and let opponents hang around, to one that blasts out of the gates with no mercy, turns it on and demolishes the opponent.

The Gators have tasted defeat and do not like it. Alabama cannot say the same.

You want Ole Miss? I’d take Ole Miss numbers – we amassed 124 yards rushing and 324 yards passing. If we do the same against you Saturday, you’d better pray for turnovers because you’ll get beat, and it won’t be close.

by skigator93 on Dec 4, 2008 4:55 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

And because we have not tasted defeat this season...

does not mean that we are eager to try that flava, this year. Besides. THESE players (the 16 playing freshman aside), have more than had their share of FAIL.

by Stuck in the Plains on Dec 4, 2008 6:18 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Ole Miss

While it is irrelevent now, if you look at our games against Ole Miss, you will find them almost identical. We both jumped out to an early lead and allowed Ole Miss to come back in the 3rd quarter. Our defense allowed Ole Miss less yards (both rushing and passing) than your defense, and our offense put up more yards against them (again both rushing and passing) than your offense.

The difference was turnovers. We fumbled 5 times (losing 3) and Ole Miss only had 1 turnover. In your game, you both had a fumble and Bama had 2 INTs to Ole Miss’ 1. So you were +1 and we were -2. That is the difference between a one point loss on a blocked PAT and hanging on for a narrow 4 point victory.

And considering that we are +21 on turnovers on the season, tops in the nation, yes – it was an aberration.

I’m not making excuses – we lost the game. Just pointing out that you should consider the facts before spouting the “we beat Ole Miss and you didn’t so we are better than you” silliness. Ole Miss is a solid football team that came into both our houses and played us both toe-to-toe.

One more little factoid – for those of you who think it is going to be a close game….if it comes down to a field goal, our kicker is perfect on the season kicking field goals (he did have that one PAT blocked against Ole Miss). Your kicker is rocking in at a cool 68%.

You may have 2 kickers which could explain the discrepency. But apparently, your team has missed 2 PATs this season.

Our kicker doesn’t really have a long resume. 10 FG attemps in 10 games? and to think that Miami (Shannon) was bitching about us kicking a late field goal when the game was already decided…..that was his first attempt all season, and little did we know at the time, that it would constitute 10% of his total regular season attempts!

He is a senior, but was a backup until this season when he beat out a freshman scholly player who kicks off (mostly out of bounds I might add). He’s a pretty good kid and is academic all SEC.

Oh, and yes...

We do have a guy on the roster who is 0/1 in FGA and 0/1 on PAT attempts. So that’s the FG descrepency. He came out for Tiffin when he’d slightly tweaked the second knuckle on his left ring finger and proceeded to have a stellar day: missed FG, missed XP, kick out of bounds.

I'll second that...

I truely feel, as I stated in the original post, that this was the NC game. The rest is now just mental barriers to overcome. Florida will have to survive the December media love affair and not get distracted by already being crowned the national champions by most media outlets, while Bama will simply have to play the team in front of them and not worry about what might have been. Florida took care of that for us, and now we play a team with nothing to lose. I don’t know if I’ve been more worried about a bowl game before.

NLS...

I can see where you’re coming from, but this is a no win situation for Bama. If we win by 28, it’s what we were supposed to do and we should’ve won by more. If we lose, well, that’s just embarassing. No offense to them, but they are not mainstream, and I can promise you that 75% of AP writer can’t name a single player on their team. Utah, therefore, can come out with all the crap that Boise came out with against Oklahoma, and you know what happened there.

It was fun to watch, but only because it was so miraculous, and miracles are not allowed in New Orleans. I’m not saying we win by 28…I’m just saying we win.
