Lucky Alabama ?

I keep hearing how Alabama is lucky. How we just get all the breaks like the INT against LSU or Ole Miss throwing an incomplete pass etc.

Well I guess in some ways we are lucky. We are lucky that Mrs. Rich Rod cried about coming to Bama. Can you guess where we would be now with RR. We are also lucky that Nick Saban was not happy in the NFL at just the time we needed a coach. He is not only a great coach, he is the perfect fit for the way Alabama wants to play and win football. And we are lucky that Major Applewhite went to back to his alma mater because he might fit there but not here and we would not be undefeated this year with him as OC. We are also lucky that the guy who coached Cody in juco ball called Bama, and not say Auburn, and that Saban was willing to gamble a scholarship on a kid too big to play in D1. We are even lucky that Mike Shula, who may have been just an average recruiter, took a chance on a punt returner named Arenas when no one else wanted him.

But these 12 wins have nothing to do with luck. If anything our schedule before the start of the season looked like a bad draw. No, these 12 wins came about because this team bought into "The Process" and worked from the day after last year’s Auburn game until now. In fact how far we have come is a result of how hard these guys have worked.

Now we face a team that has great athletes, probably more great athletes than we have, and Superman playing QB to boot. Their team has also worked hard. But, and I truly believe this, they have not worked as hard as our guys have to get to this game. What will happen Sat. is very difficult  to say. If the hardest working team wins, then Bama will win. If the super star filled team wins, then we will likely lose. But, even if the super stars beat us we will not hang our heads because nobody has given as much as our guys have given. And sometimes, maybe even this time, hard work trumps raw talent. And if we win this game it will have nothing to do with luck!!

yes

well said. i don’t know that BAMA is the best team in the country, but i believe that they’re going to win their next two games no matter who the opponents might be.

Luck is for losers

Winners make their own luck – Alabama may have had a few breaks, but so has every team that has ever gone undefeated or won a championship. The important thing is Alabama takes advantage of what falls their way. Not all teams can do that. Alabama is undefeated because they are a talented and well-coached team. It is surely not because of luck!

the thing about luck is that you have to do 1000 things right in the course of the game for that “break” to be able to make a difference and then you have to do things right to take advantage all teams get “breaks” but only the good ones make them matter

actually... luck is an integral part of the game...

but it’s just one aspect. and a measurable one at that. take fumbles for example. while forcing fumbles is a skill, recovering them is pretty much random. as the good folks over at football outsiders put it…

Stripping the ball is a skill. Holding onto the ball is a skill. Pouncing on the ball as it is bouncing all over the place is not a skill. There is no correlation whatsoever between the percentage of fumbles recovered by a team in one year and the percentage they recover in the next year. The odds of recovery are based solely on the type of play involved, not the teams or any of their players.

so how does a good football team account for this? by concentrating on forcing more opposition fumbles and holding onto the ball better thereby significantly altering the opportunities for fumbles to occur in your favor.

That sounds pretty mathematic

I always hated math. But actually, recovering fumbles is a skill practiced by pee wee teams all the way up. There is a method to it. Also, you can’t recover any fumbles that don’t occur.

I'll take "luck"...

…if that’s what you want to call the way this season has played out. But I like this quote –
“Luck is what you have left over after you give 100 percent.” ~Langston Coleman Our team and our coaches have given 100 percent, maybe even 150. Plus S&C has been a huge part of our “luck” this year on the injury front and not wearing down as the game progresses.

RE: S&C

My dad and I were watching the Miss St. game and the UT game when he was sick. We paid close attention to the other team in comparison to ours in the 4th quarter. They were REALLY sucking wind! They just looked defeated, physically. We switched it to LSU an noticed the same thing so we went to the 4th of all of the games this year. Granted, we already know the outcome, but the players for the opposition are just slower getting around than the Tide’s players and their heads are down. We started saying to each other “prove it,” to try to be sure it wasn’t just our imagination. The AU players were the same way, but IMO they started drooping about the time of the kick—it was as much mental as it was physical with them!

This is one of those areas that you can’t “measure” except for time of pos. Even then it doesn’t give the whole story b/c the OL and the DL were equally worn out! Our guys were still hoppin’.

We were lucky in 2005

This team has just worked their butts off to get here. And no matter what happens on Saturday i will hold my head high. Im sure there will be some “rival” sites cough cough TeT that will gloat if and i say IF we lose but they are the ones sitting at home during bowling season. This team has accomplished so much more than our wildest dreams and now its time to make that dream a reality.

Good post!

The Sugar Bowl...

…is nothing to sneeze at, but I WANT Miami!!! No matter WHAT happens, I’m so proud of our team and coaches. They broke all the streaks and curses this year. It’s a clean slate for Alabama football.

I can't imagine...

…AU fans would gloat if we lost. What would that mean for them, to have been the victim of a major beat down, to the team that lost the championship game? Isn’t that more humiliating for the boogers?

Good one

I like how you spelled Gators “gaytors,” playing the always hilarious homosexual card. That is really hilarious. And original too! Are you sure you didn’t go to UGA?

i gotta admit

I sometimes call him SJJPW just because I think it is hilarious – no disrespect meant, it just cracks me up. I’d save that for my embarrassing admission but I have a better one…
