Question for the Bammers.

I will preface by saying that I am an Auburn fan.

It shocks me that Saban didn't learn from Auburn last year about the quarterback situation.  Why do you think, with every claiming that Star Jackson is the heir apparent, Saban reshirted him this year instead of getting him in the game every chance he could?  If Star is nearly as good as predicted coming in, then he might not be around for his senior year anyway.  This baffled me and just thought I would ask.

Also, is Bama calling next year a rebuilding year also or do you guys think you can make a run at the SEC again?  I just ask because depth was an issue this year for you guys, although no one was able to test that theory, and you guys lose a lot of key positions.

FanPosts are just that; posts created by the fans. They are in no way indicative of the opinions of SBN and the authors of Roll Bama Roll.

I'll give it my best shot

as for the qb situation, there is no doubt having a senior SEC experienced signal caller was a huge advantage. I don’t know of many claiming Star is THE heir apparent; I actually believe Greg McElroy may start but will trust the coaching staff that their years of experience in evaluating talent is much more valuable and trustworthy than mine.My hope is that all of our players are of such high quality that we worry about losing them to the pros every year.

While we will be in rebuilding mode, I believe Saban and the staff have proven they can accomplish a ton with freshmen and sophomores who buy into the system. I believe we will definitely make a run at the SEC; the schedule is much more favorable filling in South Carolina at BDS and Georgia rotating off. Plus with Tennessee, Mississippi State, and Auburn breaking in new coaches and systems and LSU’s new issues at qb and defense, I think it will be between Alabama and Ole Miss for the West to face Florida again in the SECG.

Those are my humble thoughts.

Alabama judges its team by national and SEC titles. Auburn judges its team by how many times it beats Alabama. You tell me who the dominant team in the state is.

well...

I’m not so sure Star is the Guy. I think we’ll see McElroy as the starter and Star as his backup, or not. I’m fairly sure that unlike the Auburn situation this year, it will indeed be settled before the end of Fall practice.

As for next year, I don’t see it being as successful as this year, what with the new line and QB. My prediction is Ole Miss to win the west next year.

I'm in no condition to drive...wait! I shouldn't listen to myself, I'm drunk.

Hmmm. Ole Miss?

What about losing their front four, Oher, etc? I think they will do well, but I see a circular firing squad next year of Ole Miss-Alabama-LSU (yes), all with one loss in-division. Arkansas will be second (slash-fourth) with 2, maybe 3, in-division losses. MSU is in for pain, sucka.

just one quick point....

our starting qb next year is the one who out performs and wins the position in the spring…..right now i’d say Mc probably has a slight edge(some experience), however, considering i’ve never seen star in action, who knows how big that edge could be if there’s any at all…

Next year

will be a rebuilding year for the offensive side of the ball only. Breaking in a new QB is tough. On the other hand we only lose RA Johnson and Greenwood on D so our Defense, barring injuries, should be stellar.

Auburn fans are like slinkys... not really good for anything but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs.

by troy145 on Dec 11, 2008 10:15 PM CST reply actions

our Defense next year will be as good as 05

we won 9 games with a pretty mediocre offense in 05 based almost entirely on defense. We only lost to the barn and LSU in OT. I think our d will be as good, the SEC will be worse and our offense will be better.

i think we’ll be fine

im not impressed with your performance

The East may be down next year...

But our division is going to be appreciably more difficult. We can’t always rely on the Barn, Arkie and LSU all playing shitty.

I would have to say

that a big reason for red shirting Star is: you IDEALLY don’t want to install a completely new offense in one season. Red shirt star, get McElroy some reps and experience while the whole time developing a spread style offense with Star. I would not be shocked to see split playing time in the qb position next year. I understand many people don’t like that call but let me refer to Tebow and Chris Leak. Dual QB systems work when their designed, not a result of desperation(see So Car, VT, FSU etc). We will be okay, in fact I would say that except for the lack of mistakes, JPW is functional at best. I don’t see leadership oozing from JPW and definitely not talent. He did a good job of maximizing his abilities and not letting our foes exploit his weakness (ie his weak arm). JP is Jay Barker reincarnated… ’
I expect that we will be playing in the SECC next year, I am just worried that Florida will be just as good next year if not better (if Tebow comes back and he will). Our line will be good, we have some good prospects in waiting, and some good ones coming in as well. Our D will be 92 level good!!! I can’t wait!

by lbdasdog on Dec 11, 2008 11:27 PM CST reply actions

I willa agree with you on JP besides on one thing

Leadership. Being a leader doesn’t mean you have to get in peoples faces (see Tebow). JP never looked confused, worried or paniced at any point during this season. That was a big reason our team performed the way it did.

When you are an Alabama fan you have to hate Auburn, I hate Tennessee because i want to.

by bammer on Dec 12, 2008 8:45 AM CST up reply actions

Ditto...

…what bammer said. JPW has always been a calming presence on the field when others were confused and needed direction (that was my favorite thing about the Ole Miss game…watching him lead). His teammates made him a permanent captain this year, which means more than anything the rest of us could say, anyway.

by NiceLittleSaturday on Dec 12, 2008 10:28 AM CST up reply actions

I

think our D will be good but we have to replace Bobby Greenwood and Rashad Johnson, not easy to do. It will be interesting to see when guys like Alonzo Lawrence and Jerrel Harris get alot more PT.

by Bens4vcobra on Dec 12, 2008 4:56 AM CST reply actions

As much as i love Rashad and Greenwood

They guys behind them area far better atheletes. that doesn’t always carry over onto the field. But if the incoming guys/ they guys who got PT last year on special teams, performs anything like the freshman who started this year, i think we will be just fine and probably better than we were this year.

Comparing Bama with au is apples and oranges....

The barners thought they had an offense headed into the season with 2 qb’s and a new system. We have 2 qb’s that, though not starters, have been in the system and part of the process, and we are not changing the offense or styles. The coaching was and lack of decision making was the problem in au, and THAT will not be a problem @ Bama.
I am of the opinion that McElroy will start with Star and Durrah in a close chase for #2. McCarron will be redshirted in order to put on weight and get time in the system. CNS will make the right decision, of that I am sure.

Well, are you gonna pull them pistols, or whistle dixie?

by jtCRIMSON on Dec 12, 2008 9:17 AM CST reply actions

Your last sentence highlights another big difference in UA/AU.

We have the luxury of trusting our coaching staff to make great decisions! They worked well together this year to get the absolute BEST out of each guy, so we can kinda sit back and speculate and let them do the work. We know that if there is a guy working harder and better on the bench, he will make it to the field. AU fans HAD to say something b/c this wasn’t the case for their QB in the early weeks.

by crimsongirl on Dec 12, 2008 10:09 AM CST up reply actions

I agree...

…with jtCRIMSON. I actually thought Tubs made a mistake pulling the redshirt off Kodi when he was a freshman, especially the way he did it. It caused an already shaky Brandon Cox to lose much-needed confidence and, frankly, did the same thing to Burns, since he came in and showed that he couldn’t throw with consistency. MSU winning the game didn’t help anybody, either…anybody wearing orange and blue, anyway. I believe many of this season’s offensive woes are a direct result of that decision last year. Being a Bama fan, that’s perfectly fine with me, of course, but that’s how I see it.

by NiceLittleSaturday on Dec 12, 2008 10:34 AM CST up reply actions

I kind of find it funny a barner would come ask us this....

They should be worrying about which one of the 30 coaches named that MIGHT actually want to coach at such a dysfunctional institution….Have you guys seen the amount of names that have been mentioned? Its absolutely silly.

When you are an Alabama fan you have to hate Auburn, I hate Tennessee because i want to.

by bammer on Dec 12, 2008 10:54 AM CST up reply actions

I don't agree with you

I don’t think that anyone can blame our poor offense on the fact that they took the redshirt off Burns last season. he needed experience before taking a shot at running the offense this season. I think our offensive woes stem from Tubs himself or someone else making the calls. I said when they first hired Franklin that Tubs would stifle his offense and blame the players and low and behold what the result of the season was. No one here, even as Bama fans, can tell me that you honestly believe that Troy has more talent on offense and is more capable of running a pass offense. Yet Troy puts up 30 to 40 on teams we can’t put up 10 on.

Our offensive assistants were idiots. Nall can’t coach a pass block, Knox has always been incapable of teaching a receiver to run a proper route and Ensminger can’t coach a quarterback to lead a high school team much less an SEC football team. I haven’t decided on Eddie Gran yet. I can’t figure out whether he is a product of good recruits or if he is a good coach though. No matter what, Tuberville has become too complacent in his position and needed to go.

As for our coaching situation at the moment, we might not be better off next season but over the next 5 we will be better off without Tubs.

by Mattco on Dec 12, 2008 5:55 PM CST up reply actions

Deflecting attention away.....

from the real problem. It is silly because it is exactly what au and there fans have done all year. The real problem started before the qb problem, or the OC problem, but with the arrogance, attitude and down right laziness of the coaching staff. TT got an over inflated ego after staving off jet gate and it gained in strength because he followed it up with an undefeated season and beating Bama. But, he began to crumble when his over extended ego let Borges go and thought he could just snap his fingers and keep au on track and overhaul his offense all in one season.
We as Bama fans I believe will not have to worry about this as long as CNS is there. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen a more focused and beloved coach in many years. I do know that I for one have drank the kool-aid and will gledly come back for more.
Barners, you made choice and he quit on you, during and after the season.

Well, are you gonna pull them pistols, or whistle dixie?

jtC...

…hit it on the head again. TT’s arrogance always made me glad we never looked at him when he was still at Ole Miss. I don’t know how many times in the past weeks I’ve heard Scarbinsky in the B’ham News say how AU may find a better coach, but they won’t find a better man. Hell, I could find a better man by throwing a rock in any direction from my front yard. I feel little pity for someone that acted so cocky, slacked off on his job, and still walked away with more than 99+% of people will make in their entire lives. I don’t wish him ill, but it seems to me he hit the jackpot.

you know what.

I can’t argue with you. I realized this after last season when he sat in Arkansas for about 5 weeks trying to get more money from Auburn during recruiting. I know that Saban is a great recruiter but Tubs could have put up a fight and get some of them if he had hit the road instead of a tree hunting.

The reason people talk about what a great guy he is is simple. He graduates players and he runs a clean program. My issues with him was his lack of preparation and that has always been there. We have always been lucky to win a game in the first three games of a season under Tubs. We never come in prepared.

That is taken

out of context though. Accidents happen and the only reason “Chop Block U” got any legs for a name was because it came against Dorsey. Those things happen and the one against Bama last season truly looked accidental.

Wasn't necessary....

Unless JPW had a complete meltdown, there was no reason to play Starr ‘just because’. I know we don’t have a lot of QB experience next year, but I’m really not too worried about it.

by yellowhammer on Dec 12, 2008 5:44 PM CST reply actions

Unfortunatly

No Auburn fans were worried about our quarterback situation until it slapped us in the face with its 12" cock for 12 games. Losing JPW might not look like much but the leadership he brings will be missed.

by Mattco on Dec 12, 2008 5:57 PM CST up reply actions

Easy, now...

…don’t think that reference was necessary.

Anyway, your coaches screwed up your qb situation by bringing in Todd out of nowhere and putting him and Burns in a no-win situation. I don’t think that’s going to happen in Tuscaloosa.

by yellowhammer on Dec 12, 2008 6:30 PM CST up reply actions

No we are NOT rebuilding!

I expect next year’s team to be better than this year’s! Sure we lose the beastly offensive line, JP, and Rashad Johnson, but everyone else is coming back. Our defense will be an immovable object, and the offense will do just enough for us every game.

36-0

by Bamabrave4 on Dec 12, 2008 7:01 PM CST reply actions

Correct me if I am wrong here:

Wasn’t Burns learning a “whole new, different playbook” from his first season to his second. One that made the first season book look like a Dick and Jane book and the second like the Bible? Wasn’t the issue supposed to be that he couldn’t get all of these plays down, therefore Franklin went with Todd, who could? Also, none of the boys could get along……

Bama will be losing a great leader in JPW, however the system and coaching staff remains the same. His replacement, whomever that may be, has had the advantage of learning from said great leader. He will be stepping into an established system, NOT trying to learn a new one along with the entire team! As it was stated once before, this really is apples and oranges.

by crimsongirl on Dec 12, 2008 7:29 PM CST reply actions

Hey Auburn

great hire.

By the way- At QB next year we will have a guy who is very smart, respected by his team, and a 4th year junior- GM. He can throw as good as JPW and will be able to throw for 2000 yards next year. Moreover, our offense will be fine as we do not require the QB to carry the team. We will have a very strong O-line even with some new faces. At RB and WR we will be very good. Our offense will be more than able to score 25-30 points a game and with our defense we should be able to win at least 10 games and return to SECCG. Who knows, we could do even better.

As for Auburn…welcome to past, the Barfield years are here again.
