"Iowa State head coach Gene Chizik has been chosen as Auburn's next head coach, the Press-Register has learned.

An official statement is likely today or tomorrow, while a press conference would probably occur on Monday.

Chizik is 5-19 in two seasons at Iowa State. He previously served as defensive coordinator at Auburn and Texas.

I actually feel sorry for them

I know I shouldn’t. I should revel in the bizarre panic move. I guess that’s what happens when you’re operating from a position of strength.

makes me wonder

If Muschamp sabotaged them. Supposedly he hates Jacobs. Could he have intentionally made them think he was coming and the backed out at the last moment, causing them to panic? It’s a little crazy to think that might have happened, but you never know.

thats what i would have done

When you are an Alabama fan you have to hate Auburn, I hate Tennessee because i want to.

If true

the Aubies are going to be longing for the good old days of Tubs. No way this guy does much in the SEC, he couldn’t do much in the Big 12.

I was too young

to really enjoy the Barfield years. Thank you Jay Jacobs.

Alabama judges its team by national and SEC titles. Auburn judges its team by how many times it beats Alabama. You tell me who the dominant team in the state is.

I will believe it when I see the press conference

Heck, the Birmingham News published that RichRod was going to be our coach in the print edition and it wasn’t true.

I saw this

on Rivals.com earlier, and I have to say, I like it. He’s a good defensive coordinator, but I don’t feel threatened. Muschamp would have been better.

Hey, if any team and any fanbase deserves to struggle, it’s Auburn. They’re the biggest scumbags in the SEC. Heck, they’re the biggest scumbags in the Southeast. They’re like a sniveling bowl of dog snot. It turns my stomach to look at them.

Why today?

Anyone think they’re letting this leak today so the talk-radio circuit doesn’t get it’s jollies off this circus on day one? Also, ESPN will probably be soothing its Heisman part deux Tebowner tonight rather than singing the woeful ballad of Gene Chizik…. Maybe I give Jacobs too much credit.

your moment of zen

A poster on al.com with the handle “Vidalsassoon” wrote, “Nick is grinning like a chester cat.”

Perfection.

Oh, and nice hire Auburn. You really knocked it out of the park with that one.

Surely not

I’d like to point out that he went 0-10 to finish the year. Iowa State is in the Big 12 North. Like the SEC, there are 3 teams in the other division that a team doesn’t play each year. The 3 teams in the Big 12 South that Iowa State didn’t face while going 0-8 in the conference? Texas, Texas Tech, and Oklahoma. Again, those are the 3 teams he DIDN"T face while going winless. He’s 5-19 there over 2 years in his only head coaching experience.

I know Bama has some stories to tell of their own about Athletic Directors, Board of Trustees, etc. since shortly before Stallings left. But geez, is Bobby Lowder and Jay Jacobs screwing things up at the moment.

BTW, an article about the Board and our AD’s over the past 15 years would make for a great series of summertime articles around here………….

WOW>

Turner Gill…when he takes over K-State or Nebr. or some other midwestern school is going to utterly kick ass. By that point, the Barn will be on their 3rd-4th coach and mired in a decade of mediocrity. Never let it be said that inhaling fertilizer can’t benefit us :)

It's like watching a train wreck...

you want to look, but you know it’s just too gruesome.

I am all for takin’ the Barners out behind the woodshed, but I mean c’mon, for the spirit of competition, for SOMETHING!

I'm stopping, watching AND taking pictures.

Any halfway crappy coach should be able to win 5 games over 2 seasons by ACCIDENT. Just when I thought it couldn’t get any better……

by yellowhammer on Dec 13, 2008 7:39 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Funny.

The two happiest people about this hire- Nick Saban and Iowa State’s AD.

Meanwhile Auburn people are reported to be tearing up their season ticket order forms. I’d look for Auburn’s spring game to bring in about 12,000 fans, 13,000 if they give some hogs away at half time.

It's true

I just checked Track Em Tigers. One guy has given up totally and became a Gator fan. Several others were giving up their season tickets. More than a few are no longer going to contribute to scholarships, etc. They are reeling over there. It’s almost so bad, that I actually feel sorry for them. Then I think about our decade of mediocrity/suckiness, and I don’t recall any Barners offering condolences., just more “Fear the Thumb/Finger” BS. Sorry Barners, what comes around goes around. I do hate the fact that it makes our STATE look retarded…

the blogosphere fallout from this is nothing less than epic.

the folks over at track ‘em tigers… um, aren’t taking this very well. but the iowa state blog, clone chronicles, has an excellent cheat sheet for what wins by their coaches can be converted for.

LOLZ!

I was driving through Harlan, IA two weeks ago (right before we played the Barn), and an old lady in an ice-salt-covered white Caprice was at the intersection across from me with an Alabama flag in her passenger window. I lost my s*** and started honking and screaming “#1!!!!! #1!!!!!!”

Maybe she was just beating the rush? Or was it just Tubbs’ mama? LOL!

Seriously

I just checked again. A coupe of Tigers are having all out online cuss wars over there. One guy posts that everybody should remain loyal to Auburn throughout this situation, and then people are talking about f’ing people’s mothers and setting up times and places to fight!! This is the difference betweeen Us and Them. i have never once on RBR had someone threaten to F my mother:)

Absolutely agreed.

I despise the Barn, obviously, but I have to feel for the poor f*n schmucks saddled with this Gomer. Jesus, there is noooo definition of fail that sums this one up.

on the one hand, i’m not going to feel a lot of sympathy pounding them into the turf on an annual basis now that the balance of power has swung back our way. but, on the other, the games are better and the victories are always sweeter when you play a worthy opponent. and, more importantly, as an SEC West rival and annual end-of-season opponent – it doesn’t do our strength of schedule any good if they turn into a cupcake.

This also explains why the Muschamp rumor was so strong.

Someone must have heard “former Auburn defensive coordinator” and jumped to the wrong conclusion.

That article is full of golden quotes...

…such as…

What the hell Auburn is thinking is anybody’s guess. And who cares. Because it just unburdened Iowa State of its most unprepared, overmatched and incompetent head coach of the modern era.

and this total WTF moment (NSFW video):

And when he made the players spend 20 minutes of the first spring practice of 2007 precisely lining up their helmets, you wondered if a real life Captain Queeg hadn’t taken over the ISU football program.

ouch:

Chizik coordinated defenses at Auburn and Texas; but as a head coach, all he coordinated was disarray.

finally….

It’s Auburn’s problem now. While he has a better chance of winning in general there – because he’ll have better players – he’ll be up against it in a job where so much is riding on one rivalry game a year. Beating Alabama trumps all else at Auburn and Nick Saban will probably floss with Gene Chizik on an annual basis. It’s a coaching mismatch of epic proportions. I mean, if Mike Sanford and Tom Amstutz and Doug Martin hand you your lunch with inferior talent, what’s Saban going to do with superior talent? When the clock ticks down to 0:00 on future Iron Bowls, there will be nothing left to do but I.D. the Auburn bodies.

Good luck, Auburn, you’ll need it.

I like that guy’s style.

I had forgotten the expression

" all hat and no cattle." What a good one. I know some nice Barners and then a few big hat wearers that I can’t wait to see and innocently ask, “so, what do you think of your new coach?”

Beyond obtuse...

…are the powers that be at the Barn. Whether it was the BOT, Lowder, and/or the 2 Jays that made the ultimate decision, they missed the opportunity to hire a good, successful coach in Turner Gill plus get great publicity to save face in this whole ordeal. With all the grief we got during our coaching search, I don’t feel sorry for them at all. Karma is a bitch.

I'm skeptical

Could it be that they hired him back as D coordinator for whomever the real head coach is? Maybe someone heard that he was leaving ISU for AU and just assumed it was the head coaching position? I just can’t believe they’re that stupid. Even if true, if the deal isn’t signed yet I can’t imagine they’ll go through with it when they see the fan reaction.

Or maybe somebody in the admin finally got so mad at Louder they decided to make his football program look like the stock market.

OK, guess not

Since AU has now issued a press release.

Wow.

WOW.

I have been on the road for hours Christmasing and JUST saw this….WOW. I just can’t wait to see what they will do next! As a Bama fan, my Christmas gift is that this isn’t us, that someone who made so much fun of my team and their coaching woes is now reaping what they sowed, and my school/team/admin seems very, very stable today! Merry Christmas Bama! Enjoy.

My greatest fear now

is that I’ll wake up, it will be 2006 and people will laugh when I tell them I had a dream where we hired Nick Saban and shortly after that Auburn and Tennessee both imploded and hired Chizik and Kiffin.

I’m 80-90 percent sure this isn’t a dream. It seems so real.

a dream, just the universe shifting back into balance.
