xbobx 360 or PS3

sorry to post such a lame and self centered topic, but it's an off week so cut me some slack aight?! please....

my wife told me she was going to buy me a 360, but was at the store and the sales guy started to explain about all the add ons it'll need if she bought the $199 "arcade" 360. she got despondent and just told me " i was going to buy this for you, but i'm afraid what i'll buy wont work or be the right version. sorry to ruin the suprise"

so anyway i have been researching more, seems to me the 360 "arcade" sucks ass, and costs an additional 160 bucks if you want to add a modem and harddrive. plus the xbox live service costs money, playstation network is supposedly free for sports games (90 % of what it's going to be used for is NCAA football, the other 10 % GTA and maybe a soccer game....if it has a Blue Ray player, thats a whole nother thing i can use it for)

so what do ya'll know-feel about the xbox360 vs PS3 deal? i'm leaning towards the PS3 simply because 400 bucks gets you a hard drive, wireless modem, free online multplayer gameplay, and a Bue Ray player. and it's roughly the same cost to do w/ a 360, but the online gameplay has a subscription fee, and no blue ray player. also i haven't read as many horror stories about dieing PS3's or them causing damage to discs like w/ 360.....(and i'm currently using a 6 year old PS2 that runs like a champ)

my #1 priority though, is gameplay for EA Sports NCAA Football. (thats why a wii is out of the question) so please guys, let me know if you've tried the game on one or both of the systems, and any important things to note about which platform is better.

360

sports games are more badass on them and i assume thats what ull want. just get the console with a hard drive $299 and a 3 month online membership is only 20 bucks and it is much better than playstations network No lag, better gameplay, and better quality contests and turnaments. And of course we all have to have Halo 3 because there is nothing more fun then a shitty day ending, getting a drink and smoke and shooting up a bunch a nasty aliens with sweet guns. email me if you need some more help on it….. comer4tide@yahoo.com

I agree

halo 3 is better, 360 IMO is the best GAMING platform. I want a PS3 for the blu-ray capabilities, but the blu-ray players will be coming down in price soon because of Toshiba’s deal with sony to produce blu-ray technology.

Also, Shea got me a Wii for Christmas, so suck on that Comer!

I would go with the PS3 mainly because of the Blu Ray drive. Xbox 360 games are on DVD’s, PS3 games are on Blu Rays, meaning game size in relation to disc space could eventually become an issue between the two consoles. Plus, the Blu Ray drive upconverts all your previous DVD’s to 1080i/720p HD.

360: is for manly men who love to play sports.
PS3: for nerds who like role playing fruitcake games.

I don’t own either because it would distract me from school. I did play my brother-in-law in NCAA 09 in the mock Sugar Bowl Game yesterday. He is an Auburn fan and beat me by three points 34-31 Utah. It came down to a pick-six that JPW threw because Julio ran the wrong route.

A few thoughts...

I bought an Xbox 360 last year for Christmas, and I’ll share a few thoughts…

As far as online anything goes, the 360 is the best ticket. The PS3 online network is free, but you can get a 13-month Xbox Live subscription on New Egg for under $40 — i.e. about 2.50 a month — so it’s effectively free, and the service of Xbox Live is immeasurably better.

As for the games, I’m not really sure there is any massive difference between the two. Like most of you I’ve mainly played sports games (i.e. the NCAA series), and frankly those games haven’t really lived up to par in several years now, and that goes for both consoles. And with the whole graphics debate, like most console wars throughout the years, it’s basically arguing six against half a dozen.

The big downside for the 360 is the technical failures that have occurred. However, I don’t know if that’s really a major concern or not. I’ve had mine for a year now and haven’t had any problems — fingers crossed — and from what I’ve read as long as you keep it well-ventilated and don’t go nuts with it, it will be fine. I think the biggest problem you run into with that is when you have these nutjobs out here playing Halo 3 for 29 consecutive hours and the heart of the console effectively turns into a nuclear reactor. I think as long as you have “normal” usage while keeping things well-ventilated, it shouldn’t be a problem.

Oh, and if you do buy a 360, do not buy one of the intercoolers. Those things cause more harm that the fix. Trust me on that one. You can do the research yourself if you want. It only saps power from the console, and further obstructs the ventilation process. They simply make the existing problem bigger.

The PS3 Blue-Ray player is really a big selling point of it, and if you are really looking to go in that direction, then it might be the best buy for you. I thought about that, but I remembered that my PS2 had the DVD player built in — and that was back when DVD players were still very high tech — and it went out after no time and never really worked right. So, that gave me some quality concerns with the Blue-Ray player, and I wasn’t too keen on spending 30+ bucks for a movie, so that really kept me from going that route.

The biggest thing that I miss about not having a Playstation — I’ve historically played Playstation only — is that you cannot play Gran Turismo. To me the Gran Turismo series is probably the best video games made, and it really blows not having that on the 360. However, aside from that, I’m pretty happy with having the 360.

Oh, and the "Arcade" system...

The arcade system is actually a pretty good deal if you are just looking to play games by themselves and nothing more.

The problem you run into with the arcade system is that if you really want to use Xbox Live to play games online or download stuff, it really doesn’t have the modem / hard drive that you need to do it properly, so you are going to have to upgrade in those departments before you can really get things like they should be. And of course, after you buy all of that separately, you’ll end up spending more money than you would have had you just bought a Pro or an Elite from the beginning.

Don’t get me wrong, the arcade system isn’t necessarily a bad buy — after all, it’s stupid to spend a ton of extra money to get stuff you are never going to use — but make sure you figure out exactly how you want to use it beforehand, and then buy accordingly. If you are just going to use the traditional offline console, then the arcade is fine, but if you are looking to use Xbox Live, you better invest in either a Pro or an Elite.

Yeah, Blue Ray is okay

But, i think it is too good. have any of you noticed that everything is so high def. That it actually looks like playdoah? Thats why i wasnt ever, really swayed by PS3. That, and i love shooters and 360 is simply the best with that.

technical failures and paying for online gameing

are my two concerns about xbox. of course the infamous red ring of death has supposedly been solved, but i also have read about regular, pro, and elite xbox’s scratching disks even without the console being moved or bumped. add in the fact that there’s no Blue ray player, i dont play shooters cause i suck at them and dont care enough to practice, and the only online support/functionality i want is to play pick up games of NCAA w people from here, my friends and bro, and dudes from work…… so i guess should ask, just how much better is xbox live to PSnetwork? i guess you can do online dynasy mode w/ xbox? hows that even work? you join a fantasy/dynasty league and play a season w/ another contained group of players? i’m not looking to rent or buy stuff from netflix and i dont care about earning points for redemption for crap. i just want to keep beating my older brothers (“lbdasdog” btw) ass as often as possible and add some new folks to the roster of people i have crushed. is Xbox live still that much better to where it’s worth paying for only that?

i hate to use front runner logic also, but if most everyone else has xbox (and it seems they do) then maybe i should get one too so i can play the most people possible online, but to think i’m paying for somthing i could get for free……

Xbox

Xbox put all their DVD marbles in HDD, which is soon to be dead (getting harder and harder to find movies). Everyone thought HDD would win out over Blu Ray, but the BR format holds more info. Just like DVDs, it will become easier and cheaper to own in the next year or so.

I would say in your situation PS3

But I would rather have the Xbox360, and Xbox Live works better than PS3 network.

Online Play

The 360 is the only system that allows Online Dynasties which is a plus if you have friends online. Main reason I play NCAA 2009 after hating 08 so bad.

thanks for all the advice ya'll cept

now i’m back completely on the fence again. i have a nice fancy TV, so the blue ray player would be nice, plus i get free rentals cuz my homeboy runs a giant vidya store…..i really wish all of yall had just said go w/ PS3 it’d be so much easier to make up my mind since that wher ei was leaning… alot of my friends and co-workers are on xbox live and it’d be nice to play with some of you kind folks so maybe i’ll just wait for the next price cut and let that be my guide…

also

anyone tried the NCAA 09 on both PS3 and 360? anything stand out as a difference between the two, because again the primary reason i’m getting this, and the game that will be played 90% of the time or more, is for NCAA football. (i suck at rock band too. i am old…. they should come up w/ a yardwork simulating game, i will totally kick ass at that)

I think the Wii

has something like that, they have all the tools and everything too, and a mower you can sit and drink beer while u mow over agusta national golf course……how badass of a game would that be? To sit and drink beer on a toy mower in the A/C and mow Agusta, Pebble Beach, Turner Field, BDS, places like that???? I think i just thought of a million dollar idea…whats the number for WII?

Here is the info you need from someone with both

I have both, i play only a few select games on the 360 and everything else on PS3. Why you ask? Because my 360 sounds like a fucking helicopter. My PS3 is quiet and nice and my 360 has had one RRoD and this one sounds like a plane at takeoff, I am scared of it. They have the same games minus a few exclusives on each side. BluRay will spoil you but they are retarded expensive to buy, if you have a place to rent them near you then it is a valid option.

As for the rest of it:
the Playstation network sucks. It is unorganized, it lags on most games and every game has its on shit going on. XBox live kicks ass. It is well organized, you can jump from game to game fast, you can talk to your buddy while playing a different game. If this is your number one thing, then get a 360.

PS3 has better RPG games and Xbox has better shooters, point blank. They both have the same sports games. Decide whether you want to play a shooter or RPG as a second choice to games.

Accessories, they both suck. They are both too expensive for extra controllers, headsets and anything else you might want. I will say that quality-wise, the PS3 accessories are far better than the 360’s. The wireless controllers last a long time on a battery and so does the bluetooth headsets, and both are bluetooth so you can go where ever you want with them and still talk versus the 360 wireless headset sucking balls.

This is what they boil down to. For sports games by yourself, I would go PS3. If you are going to play online and play against some of your friends, you will need a 360.
