Andre Smith Suspended for Sugar Bowl
It has been announced that All-American left tackle Andre Smith has been suspended for violation of team rules. He will not participate in the Sugar Bowl and has been sent home. Coach Saban's statement can be read here. No other details have been announced so far.
Combine this with textbookgate from last year's Tennessee game and you can't say that Saban lacks discipline (assuming it was a decision that could've gone either way.) That's a lot of suspended starters before very big games.
Needless to say, this is very bad news for us and very good news for Utah. You don't lose a player of this caliber and not feel it on the field, especially against a quality team like Utah.
We will keep you up to date on this story when we find out more.
In the meantime, here's my analysis of the situation: @**!@^#$^!!!!
update: ESPN is reporting that it's agent related. (HT: Kenny483)

This would’ve been the end of the line if we had Oklahoma on the schedule.
Still not good, but I don’t think losing Andre is going to be enough.

It has to be contacts with NFL agents. And it probably occurred before they arrived in NO. I just hope that this won’t damper our chances
I seriously doubt it has anything to do with agents. My guess is it is probably some secondary violation akin to the “textbook scandal” from last year. I maybe too optimistic, but I doubt that Andre Smith was foolish enough to be involved with an agent directly. Also, I think the only major violation would be if he signed with an agent, if memory serves correctly you are allowed to interview agents before signing.

I posted my optomistic view on the other thread now,
as an Auburn fan, I can’t help but to kind of hope that he accepted gifts from an agent before the Iron bowl and you have to forfeit the game. Long live the streak!
Seriously, you guys still have the rest of the line and that is a beast against an undersized Utah front, you will be fine.

This could be something as simple
as him staying out too late or showing up drunk at the hotel. I know how it is, I partied with half of the Clemson team a couple years ago before the Music City Bowl, and they didn’t fair well the next day.

Exactly...
…there is no reason to speculate on what caused the suspension and we will find out when we find out…assuming they find it fit to tell us. “Violation of team rules” has a lot of possibilities and could mean that he ate Twinkies instead of Coach Saban’s beloved Little Debbie cakes for all we know.

All of the NCAA infractions are against team rules, too.
Saban wouldn’t punish the whole team like this for a minor slip up. If he missed curfew, he wouldn’t start or he’d get a half-gamer.
From where I’m sitting, the ONLY reason to send him home is because his eligibility terminated… and we all know what the likely cause of that would be.

He probably wouldn't be sent home for minor violations...
and he was on a plane this morning. Every indication appears to be contact with NFL agents. It breaks the day after the NFL regular season ends. Analysts have him at or near the top of every board. Plus, look at Saban’s press release. It just seems odd.
Realistically, he wasn’t coming back next year anyway. So, we lose him for this game. It’s a preview of next year, except without Fluker filling in the slot. As for Andre, he’s a young kid entitled to make amistake now and then. Hopefully he’ll learn from it.

I don't know if this is true.
But I heard some speculation somewhere that maybe he signed with an agent on purpose, knowing he’d lose his eligibility, because he knows he’s a top-5 pick and he’s concerned about playing in the Sugar Bowl and getting hurt. I don’t know what kind of person he his, but I thought I would throw that out there. Is he the kind of player that might do something like that?

Cecil Hurt
Cecil Hurt said that some information was provided to the University, and the school talked with Andre and decided to suspend him. He said that there is no evidence at this time that it was discussion with an agent, but that is the most probable outcome.
He seemed to indicate that this was a case of the University being proactive. He seemed to indicate that this may be a case of the University not knowing all the evidence, and they chose to be proactive and not play Andre Smith. Cecil pointed out about the previous problems Alabama players had, 1992 with Langham.

I'm stunned...
This is the last person I would expect this of. This is the way he wants to be remembered? The way he wants to end his career at Alabama? Unbelievable!!! If the logical deduction is true and it is NFL related, how selfish was it that he couldn’t wait another freakin’ week?
Ironically, before this story broke, I was going to post this about Coach Saban winning another “Coach of the Year” award. This was in the article:
Although it wasn’t part of the original trip itinerary, the entire team went to the Louisiana Superdome to watch some of the Carolina Panthers and New Orleans Saints game, which had playoff implications. "There are quite a few players on our team that have never seen a professional football game before, so I thought this would be a great opportunity for them," Saban said.
I thought that was so cool. Could this have happened yesterday? If we find out he jeopardized any of this season’s wins in any way, I may have to hunt his ass down.
I still say we win the Sugar Bowl, of course, but I have to tell ya’ll that I had a nightmare a few nights ago and we were behind 24-14 in the 4th quarter. Seriously.

Johnson to tackle
At first I wondered why they would do this, creating upheaval in two positions rather than just sticking Smith’s backup (my apologies for not knowing who that is) in his spot. I guess the coaches figure they would rather at least have some experience on the outside. The backup guy, though, would at least know the plays for that position. Johnson is going to have to try to learn them before gametime. On many plays guard and tackle assignments are like night and day.

Depth chart from bamaonline
On paper, Barrett Jones and Tyler Love are listed as Smith’s backups. Although you maybe right in a real world sense the coaches probably agreed “if Smith’s out, we’re moving Johnson over” in which case he probably knows the assignments as Pete said. Especially since Jones and Love are true freshman (redshirted?). They have Motley listed as Johnson’s backup, I guess Ross has shown more in practice or something to get the nod over him. Didn’t Andre miss the Tulane game? Who played for him then?

was the lineup for the Tulane game. it was also the game where we were horrible on offense. at the same time, it was coming off the “big” win over Clemson and it was at home. these were the type of games in which Bama struggled with and came out flat all year. hopefully the team will be amped to redeem the UF loss and come out and pound Utah.

Not quite true
Marlon Davis tweaked his hammy on the first series of the Tulane game, which was kind of a worst case scenario. If he’d been hurt during the Clemson game, or pulled up during practice that week, we would’ve had time to get his replacement more reps. As it was, I think Ross and Motley shuttled in and out and their lack of experience hurt us. If there’s a bright spot here it’s that the staff has about a week to get the OL steadied and the new guy starter reps. Don’t discount the value of this.

They should do something to an agent that is caught with a player like this. They should fine them to a degree that this stops, I personally don’t care if it is $100,000 or so, you know, something to really slap them in the face and make them think about it.

We just got off of what most are calling the 2nd worst penalty handed down by the NCAA, second only to SMU’s death penalty. I don’t think we have any strikes left as far as the NCAA is concerned, so we don’t have a choice but to do some self reporting in this case.

I seriously doubt . . .
That they will drop in talent and preparation too much.
Being prepared, execution, the play calling, these things outweigh the difference in talent between one starter and his replacement, especially with a team as talented as yours is on the line.
I’d prefer to have seen him play, but best of luck anyway and may the best team win.
See you all in Nawlins.

For a team and a player
to say all year its about us not me, this sure hurts. All we give to this team and what we have been through over the last 10 years i thought this group was different. Thanks andre, u just landed urself in the same boat as Fran and DeBouse……thats great company. enjoy the nfl dumbass, and ill say this for the team and the fan base, way to leave us for your selfisness ambitions and selfcenterd attitude. Your true colors have been shown

If he did this intentionally and/or knowingly...
…I say I’m glad he’s gone. Our team and Coach Saban deserve better than this. We were all “Snowed”(pun intended) by his quiet demeanor and humble “all I’m thinking about is the next game” when asked about his NFL plans. There is no excuse for not waiting until after the Sugar Bowl to talk to ANYONE. It’s not like his money would change over the course of a week. I hope he goes to Detroit. I’ve been there and it is on my list of the top 10 armpits of the US.

I'm all about giving people the benefit of the doubt...
but there’s NO F-ING WAY he didn’t know the rules regarding agent interaction. If I know the rules, then surely a guy who is picked to go top 3 knows. I’m sure even the NFL, when he put his papers in, said something along the lines of, “hey, don’t talk to any agents until your team’s last game is over, or they will be penalized”. Andre has been very good for us for a long time, but what’s one more freakin game? This is, at least, a very selfish act, and I can’t wrap my mind around his motivation for doing this, unless the rumors are true that he was purposefully trying to lay out to avoid getting hurt and compromising his draft status.
FOR GOD’S SAKE, ANDRE, THINK OF THE FREAKIN CHILDREN HERE…

Or...
This misconduct could be from another family member. If a family member is having illegal contact with an agent it is the same thing as Andre doing so, and the team would have no alternative but to suspend him. The improper dealings with an agent is a coverall charge that can mean a lot. This could even be an accusation that the University of Alabama cannot prove is not true, and has no choice but to err on the side of caution.
I understand everyone’s nervousness, because of what has happened in the past, but I still do not believe we know everything yet. I know that I could be completely wrong, and am possibly being way too optimistic by imploring reasonableness, instead of casting the stones.

I had not thought of that, thank you.
Now I have to throw away all my drawings of Andre burning at the stake. Well, I won’t throw them away, I’ll just save them for when the truth comes out. Don’t want to over react, right?

according to antoine caldwell, smith "He kind of showed remorse and apologized. It’s just one of those things. " so the family-member theory seems unlikely.
but, let’s step back a bit here. here is a 21-y-o who has come off the euphoria of a great season, national accolades and is plopped down in new orleans for a week to he feted and fawned over. the chance for a stupid misstep is huge and he made it, was punished and apologized.
that’s a hell of a lot different than an Ellis T. Jones III award-winning performance and it’s kind of ridiculous to treat it like such. since the johns debacle this team has been on astoundingly good behavior and all of them, andre included, deserve credit for that.
in a weird way, it’s actually a positive from a disciplinary standpoint because it gives saban an example to hold up in case there are any problems with players down the road. no matter how good you might be and what you production does for the team, you are not above the team ever.

It was not...
…that I thought that was the definite explaination, I just was throwing out another example of what possibly happened. I think you make a great point about perspective, regardless of what happened it will still be a great disappointment for everyone. It just does not nearly equal some of the other problems players have had in the past.
I wonder how much of this angst is directed at Andre, because this could significantly affect our chances of winning. Perhaps, it should be viewed differently.
I do disagree with you about the discpline issue regarding Saban. I do not think the University or Saban had any choice, but to err on the side of caution. We have seen the down side of our program not acting proactively, and trying to hide a previous incident with an agent.

Discipline is back.
I was glad to see our coach running a more disciplined team, starting with the 2007 group, but maybe not for the obvious reasons: to keep us from the clutches of the NCAA. Rather, it gets old that we have to POINT OUT the guys who “act right” and do what they are SUPPOSED TO BE DOING, like most of the other students on campus. I am not saying that the other students aren’t drinking, but if you take alcohol out of the discussion(not the time or place), they are going to class, buying their own books, paying their own way, etc. I don’t think we really expect too much more out of them than we do out of the average scholarship student!
If an academic scholarship student had broken rules they were required to follow, everything would have been taken away! Housing, scholarship, benefits, etc. immediately! This is because they would put the entire program they represent at risk with their actions—-much like Smith has done with his. It doesn’t matter whether it is his family or himself.
Over the course of three years, I am sure he has had time to educate his family on the rules of speaking with ANYONE before his last game. I am certain HE has familiarized himself with the rules in that time as well. It isn’t that complicated and he has had plenty of time! He has known this day would come since he stepped foot on campus. This didn’t sneak up on him.

So Smitty messed up we are going to be fine he was leaveing anyway. I hate for him and the team they have done so good together this year even with the loss to Fl. they play a great game. So stop the hubbug and focus on the job at hand and beat THE HELL OUT OF THE UTES. Saban ain’t going to let one man stop the show he’ll have everybody ready to play and this is going to be a great win for the guys leaving with their heads up. SO ROLL TIDE ROLL AND RAMMER JAMMER !!!!!!!!

What is it with the Sugar Bowl and agnet problems....
Haven’t we been down this road before? I realize that all of the players today were toddlers when Bama went to NO in 92, but come on. Do you need a history lesson? I’ll be glad to give you one. Antonio Langham makes an agreement with an agent on a napkin, that starts the ball rolling on a decade plus long journey through hell that has only really come back THIS YEAR!!!
My advise, if you see any agent within talking distance of a player, TAZE HIM!!!!
I know that CNS will now use this as a reminder to all players, that no one man is bigger than the team. This ain’t your Daddy’s football program, this is a new day and a new way!!!!!!
Well, are you gonna pull them pistols, or whistle dixie?

Hey Guys!
We made it or better yet RBR made it big time!
I bet RBR gets more hits a day than good ole Dr. Saturday but its still kinda neat…unfortunately it was under these circumstances.

“I bet RBR gets more hits a day than good ole Dr. Saturday but its still kinda neat”
I love RBR. I think it’s great. I’m glad it’s around and I appreciate the hard work Todd (et al.) have put into it. I do not mean this in a disparaging or offensive way . . . but Roll Bama Roll does not pull 1/10th the traffic that Dr. Saturday does. Partially because Dr. Saturday gets the Yahoo pipe hooked into his blog (the same reason FanHouse dwarfs every other sports blog out there in terms of hits) but also because all of the heavy hitters read, and link to, his blog. It has a more universal appeal and he gets free traffic from yahoo.
RBR couldn’t compete with that, if it were a competition.

Some stats for you to put this in perspective…
RBR averages around 5k page views a day. This comes out to 150k a month or 1.8m a year.
Multiple times a day on FanHouse there would be posts pulling in between 1 and 5k hits per hour for several hours at a time. FanHouse generated 350k page views in its FIRST WEEK, before it started getting promoted by AOL to any significant degree. In its second season, days with 2m+ pageviews were not uncommon. They are the norm this year.

As Pete said...
…it’s not a competition, and even if it were, Dr. Saturday would whip us both quantitatively and qualitatively. Truthfully though, we’re doing two totally different things that can’t (and shouldn’t) be compared.
We have a good relationship with Matt (hence our linking to one another in the blogrolls) and he wrote a lengthy chapter in Yea Alabama 2008. He’s good people.

the birmingham news is now reporting the alabama AG might get involved….
Chris Bence, spokesman for Attorney General Troy King said, “We are aware of allegations and taking steps to review the allegations.”… Bence said Smith’s case could be helped because of Alabama’s stringent laws regarding sports agents.

King
is a UA alum. I was in school when he became Attorney General several years ago and someone dug up all this wacko stuff from letters he sent to the Crimson White when he was a student in the 80’s. To say he is a staunch conservative is putting it very, very mildly. That aside, whatever he does will not put Andre on the line of scrimmage on Friday night. Maybe it will prevent future occurrences.

Enforcement...
I hope the agent gets indicted.
Alabama not only has a tough law, but it has been successfully prosecuted," Bence said. “We have a track record of enforcing this law.”
Tide Sports mentioned this recent enforcement:
King’s office in May 2006 announced the arrest of a sports agent for alleged illegal contact with University of Alabama football player Tyrone Prothro while he was in the hospital with a broken leg. The agent had been indicted.
I had forgotten about that story involving Pro.
