Birmingham News: Tuberville Out At Auburn

"Tommy Tuberville is out as Auburn's football coach, The Birmingham News has learned. An official announcement could come today."

Even aside from the Birmingham News, many Auburn sources are beginning to report this as well. One way or the other, it seems like the blowout loss to Alabama and the 5-7 season was just too much to endure. No word yet on whether or not this is a "resignation," a "firing," and exactly what becomes of the buyout.

I hope this

is not true…I want to beat him a few more times. Please be a rumor.

But, if true this makes what 4 coaches that were “processed” in just one year. Miles should have gone to Mich. while he could. His days are numbered.

In all seriousness...

Auburn is simply not in the business of taking Clemson rejects. Tommy Bowden will not even be mentioned as a legitimate candidate.

On the other hand, talk of getting guys like Mike Leach, Butch Davis, and Bobby Petrino by the Auburn people is equally unfounded. Leach is a poor fit at Auburn, and probably will get a new deal with Tech; if Davis wouldn’t leave for his alma mater in Arkansas, he’s not leaving for Auburn, and Petrino’s contract — no-competition clause with SEC West schools — will not allow him to leave, even if he wanted to, which I highly doubt that he does.

Realistically, I figure Auburn highs a coach from a mid-tier (most likely non-BCS) program like Gary Patterson, or a top-flight coordinator with no previous head coaching experience (Brent Venerables, Jimbo Fisher, etc.).

by outsidethesidelines on Dec 3, 2008 5:09 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i doubt seriously

that jimbo fisher is going anywhere. Especially when he can have Florida where he’ll snag good recruits as opposed to coming to Bama and get pwnt in recruiting every year.

Let's also not forget...

that the Birmingham News had “Rich Rodriguez to Alabama” completely wrong two years ago.

by rugman11 on Dec 3, 2008 4:54 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Also,

from the AOL story that broke that rumor nationwide, a humorous quotation:

Personally I’ll call this a good save, as most of the prominent coaches mentioned balked at the opportunity. Rodriguez was literally the last available first-rate coach before Alabama would have had to refine its search and start trolling fallback candidates like Georgia Tech coach Chan Gailey.

Good thing we didn’t end up with a “first-rate coach”.

The Clemson AD has gotta be kicking himself right now

Watch TT end up at MSU. Fans are happy if you go to a bowl and he will have plenty of time to hunt the MS delta flyway with other MSU folks. MSU has a big presence in the delta, which is a duck hunting meca, so he should fit right in for his second stop in MS.

I wouldn't piss off the boys from Alabama . . .

by I hate UT on Dec 3, 2008 4:58 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Question?

If Tubs goes to MSU he will have coached 3 SEC schools. Will this be the record? Has anyone ever coached 3 SEC schools? Maybe this was his plan to set a new record.

As head coach?

As head coach, not to my knowledge. I can think of several who have coached at two — Nick Saban, Gerry Dinardo, Steve Spurrier, Steve Sloan, Red Drew, Houston Nutt, etc. — but I don’t think anyone has coached at three.

by troy145 on Dec 3, 2008 5:43 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Bryant...

Bryant only coached at two SEC schools, Kentucky and Alabama. The SEC formed in 1933, he was at Kentucky from 1946-1953, and at Alabama from 1958-1982.

He was an assistant at a third school (Vandy), and actually spent a game there as head coach. One time Red Sanders was hospitalized, he dubbed Bryant as the interim coach for one game, so I guess you could technically say he was the head coach at three SEC schools, but again that was only on a temporary, interim basis.

by outsidethesidelines on Dec 3, 2008 5:55 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Didn't he accept the Arkansas job...

….while an assistant at Vandy, and then join the Navy instead once WWII broke out? I know Arkansas wasn’t the SEC then, but that’s pretty close.

On Auburn's website

you can actually go and vote Tubs as Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year. We should start a movement to get it done. Vote for Tommy!! Vote for Tommy!!

by 5026 on Dec 3, 2008 5:11 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Not that I care that much..

…but this is a really stupid move by Auburn. Who are they going to go get? This is yet another example of how everything at Auburn is contingent upon the state of UA’s program. We have a great year, so instead of giving Tuberville another chance next year they panic and fire him. Now they owe 6 million to him, another buyout to whoever new they hire, plus a normal salary. This situation has the potential to be similar to when Ole Miss fired David Cutcliffe because winning 8 or 9 games wasn’t good enough for them. They hired Coach Cromageron and sucked for four years. Oh well, good luck Auburn!

by K. brevis on Dec 3, 2008 5:30 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Reports: Tuberville "resigned"

According to reports by Fox 6 and WSFA, Tuberville “resigned,” but stated that he will get the six million dollar buyout as was called for in his contract.

Obviously, those two things don’t make sense. Tuberville essentially quits, and instead of him paying Auburn the six million for reneging on the contract earlier, Auburn will pay him the six million dollars. There is no way in hell that Auburn is that benevolent. Read between the lines… Tuberville was forced to resign, hence the buyout. All of the talk about Tubby being burned out, wanting to spend more time with his family, his wife wanting him to retire since 2004, etc., are quite frankly nothing more than a pretext for the real reason.

Considering that Auburn’s new coach — if he is the pretty big hire like Petrino, Davis, or Leach, like many Auburn people are hoping for — that will put the cost of this coaching turnover in the neighborhood of 10 million dollars for the year. With that hefty sum, I cannot help but think they have an incentive to go after a cheaper head coach, like a non-BCS conference coach or a coordinator.

by outsidethesidelines on Dec 3, 2008 5:35 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

ESPN...

…is saying that Auburn has contacted Leach.

by Nico2.0 on Dec 3, 2008 5:41 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yep...

Scarbinsky reported it earlier in the day, and I imagine ESPN is essentially just piggy-backing that report.

Either way, though, I really doubt that Leach ends up at Auburn.

by outsidethesidelines on Dec 3, 2008 5:52 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

And...

And if you read the Auburn boards, the overwhelming majority of Auburn people are going to be very unhappy if Leach gets the job. They hate his offense, aren’t convinced he can recruit, and don’t think that style of offense can work in the SEC.

I think it’s a dumb argument on all three fronts, but nevertheless that is what the overwhelming majority of them are saying.

I hate to say it

but this is a little ridiculous in my opinion. During our probation years, we dealt with second-rate coaches, mediocre seasons in which we lost to our rivals, and losing seasons where we lost to mostly everybody.

When we fired those coaches after at least two sucky years in a four year period (DuBose and Shula) everybody outside of our gang ripped into us. They said we were obsessed with the past and expecting every coach to be the Bear and that we just couldn’t accept that Alabama wasn’t a great school with any real potential to win championships anymore.

Now, four teams that we kicked the crud out of this year have fired/dismissed/forced the resignation of at gunpoint/etc. their coaches after we beat them handily, so I’m a little peeved.

I know Bowden wasn’t that great, but how many losing seasons has he had? What about Fulmer? Or Croom? From what I remember, Tuberville hasn’t won fewer than nine games in God knows how long and Auburn cans him after one bad year? Granted it was a really bad year and the pendulum for future success has swung in Bama’s direction, but are they going to find someone dramatically better?

To hell with Auburn for firing Tuberville. I didn’t really care for the guy, but he loses his first Iron Bowl since 2001 and they can him?

Who’s fanatical now? I hope those jerks leave the entire Bama family alone from now on because we’ve put up with a lot of criticism for our passion. Hell, we gave second-rate coaches a shot at the job, then gave them four years to have their way with it.

I don’t know, but to think Auburn just fired their most successful coach since Shug Jordan (which makes him practically their second most successful coach in history) ticks me off.

by Bamagrad on Dec 3, 2008 6:37 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Oh, yeah,

and these guys don’t really seem to realize that the reason they dominated us—Tennessee in the mid to late 90’s and Auburn and LSU in the new decade—is a clear result of our probation. I’m not absolving us, but didn’t they think we’d right the ship once we got a good coach? Once we finished up our sentence of sanctions?

Didn’t they realize it was mighty easy recruiting the studs in Alabama while Alabama was so messed up? Did Tennessee like having Fred Weary at tackle and Tee Martin at quarterback? Did LSU like having Jamarcus Russell at quarterback? Did Auburn like having Cadillac in their backfield? Think of all the other Bama boys who wound up at their schools during our probation.

And they think the reason they were beating us was something else. This makes me despise Auburn and Tennessee even more.

by Bamagrad on Dec 3, 2008 6:42 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Couldnt have said it better myself

Though i really don’t like Tubbs, this makes me hate AU more. This guy didn’t deserve to be treated this way. He was great for Auburn and did more than most before him. LIke i said in a previous thread, i believe we are seeing a colapse of epic proportions. I always knew Alabama would bounce back because of our tradition and heck we are Alabama. Auburn on the other will have a tougher road to haul. If they make a bad decision on who to replace Tubby, it could set them back 5-10 seasons. That might be over dramatic but if they weren’t happy with Tubbs, the next guy is in real trouble. There are only a few guys out there that can compete with Saban in recruiting. And all of them are at solid gigs.

When you are an Alabama fan you have to hate Auburn, I hate Tennessee because i want to.

Bob Bockrath

I’m a new add here. I have been a blog lurker for a while, but finally took the plunge. Roll Tide.

To be honest does Jay Jacobs decision making remind you of Bockrath (among others) running Coach Stallings off in 1996, in the face of the NCAA sanctions?

Granted, I would never compare Wingnut to Coach Stallings. However, over at TET and other places this seems like a fairly unpopular decision, similar to the Stallings debacle.

It’s that nagging feeling of change for changes sake, vice change for a real reason.

Bobby Lowder and crew is going to make a bad season turn into a bad decade. Karma is a bitch that way.

No matter how obnoxious Ears is, Lowder & Co. did him wrong today.

Speaking of Ensminger…

His wife came on sports call and said that Steve was out of town recruiting and just happened to be sitting in Raymond Cotton’s living room when she texted him that tommy got fired. What do you think that Raymond’s family had to say about that as Ensminger was leaving their house? Idiots! Who the hell made this decision knowing how it was going to reflect on these recruits. Especially considering that you firing people that are sitting in living rooms when you do it. Morons! Please God hit Jay Jacobs with lightning.

actually, if she means that they get better paychecks because they make it to the nfl, she might be right. of course i think that’s stretching the meaning of the statement to the extreme.

but, remember, this is the wife of a coach who, pretty clearly, has been treated like crap. since her husband’s been in the employ of a particular school, i imagine she’s built her own ties to the institution that are pretty strong. so her loyalty to her husband and then the school have been trashed it’s completely understandable she’d strike out like this. good for her, i say.

but, thinking about it, this point about nfl draft has me thinking… is a player more likely for an nfl career in the saban system? i was reading pro football prospectus this week and there’s an article talking about how spread players are harder scouts to evaluate for the pro game. but saban’s scheme is seen as a throwback from those systems. so, does it follow it’s a set up that helps players be evaluated for their post-collegiate careers?

I’m just anxious to see whether this was really a good move or not. I hope they wouldn’t fire TT without having someone in place.

by brandonh on Dec 3, 2008 10:02 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It really doesn't matter...

…even though he deserved more payback for his classlessness. I have never heard our coach even say anything derogatory about another coach, much less hold up fingers in the air. In a nutshell, it all boils down to FEAR on Aubarn’s and TT’s part. If it wasn’t this year, it was coming down the pike in the next couple. It was inevitable that he was gonna be gone. He was ALWAYS going to be out worked and out classed by Coach Saban.

Obama will take over

I think the SEC (ok you too Bowden) should call on the federal government to step in…..Fannie May and Freddie Mac have destroyed the housing market and the credit companies…BAILOUT!!! The environmentalists have demanded the fuel guzzeling SUV’s of old go away and we start making cars that run on fairy dust, baby farts and elfkin tears (it’s not the Auto Workers Unions..wink wink nudge nudge)……..BAILOUT!!

And NOW!! From the depts of the deep south comes the Nictator!! He’s costing people their jobs Barak!! You need to get down here now! The SEC is crumbling under the mighty force that is Nick Saban. If we look at this the same way Congress is looking at the Auto Industry we can follow the same horrific trend. They say that not only the car guys will lose their jobs, but the suppliers will go under, the little pine scent hanging tree industry will colapse…THAT’S NOTHING!!

Follow the Sabanation destruction. Saban processes Bowden, Croom (actually hate that one and refuse to bad mouth a Bama boy…but), Fat Phill and Tubby. Right off the bat the 14 writers that proclaim the ACC is back to dominance loose their jobs. They are forced to take lower paying jobs reporting on middle school hopscotch tournamnets and the economy suffers!! The 400 tons of orange material it takes to cover Fulmer in the Orangeness that is is outfit is no longer needed. The Tennessee economy suffers a huge hit as does the dental industry who can now no longer afford to protect the “Big Orange 3” teeth in the mouths of the 400 seamstresses. And in Auburn the mass exodus of fans leaving the area has left the town empty, nothing but waste and depression. No jobs, no fun, no intellectual community to discuss events and policy, just a small sad town hanging on to a waste of a football team for salvation…..Wait it was like that before….Sorry!!

BARAK WE NEED YOU!

Hope……….(Nick didn’t cause you too much pain this year SEC)
Change………(Your underpants Florida we’re coming for you next!)
Now………(The domination can begin a’ight?)
