2009 committments

We've had a great run from our seniors but its almost time for them to move onto either the pros or future businessmen. I'm sure they will be as successful in all their lives as they've made us feel as fans.

Our freshman of 2008 did a great job as well and it looks like CNS has already managed to round up 19 more great committments for next year. It appears we will be in good shape on the oline with hard work and experience.

My question is for OTL, NICO, or Todd who seem to be able to answer any question my limited knowledge of football is able to wonder about. If we have 9 seniors to graduate from the team, how could we have 19 freed scholarships for the incoming committments?

also i read some key prospects were stating that the outcome of the game might determine there commitment (including richardson kirkpatrick)

i don't...

see how their commitment could waiver after our performance. They all know our team is young and that there is opportunity for them to step up and contribute.

The outcome...

The outcome of the SEC Championship Game is not going to hurt us in recruiting. It’s a big game, but we still had an incredible year, and we’ll still have an unreal class. No one is ever going to not pick a team simply because they went 12-0 and then lost a close game to the eventual national champion in Atlanta.

Im just telling you what I read on al.com earlier this week. The article was about common prospects of the two teams. Both richardson and kirkpatrick were quoted as saying the outcome might influence their decision.

Initial Question

My question is for OTL, NICO, or Todd who seem to be able to answer any question my limited knowledge of football is able to wonder about. If we have 9 seniors to graduate from the team, how could we have 19 freed scholarships for the incoming committments?

Well, right now we’re a few guys under the limit of 85, so that will help somewhat. Most reports only have us at 82 or 83 scholarships, with combined with the 9 outgoing seniors, that leaves us with the ability to bring 12 guys in.

From there, though, you get there with attrition. We’ll probably bring in about 21-22 guys this upcoming Fall — a couple won’t qualify, and we might have a greyshirt or two — and that will need us needing to open up 9-10 spots, which really shouldn’t be a problem. Frankly, we’re likely to have more than a few guys looking to transfer, and honestly you can always count on a couple of guys to do something stupid and get kicked off the team (see Elder, Johns, etc). If you put all of it together, we’ll probably have space to bring in about 21-22 guys.

One way or the other, it shouldn’t be an issue.

Also

Because we are under the 85 number. We are probably going to have a few guys enroll in January (Carpenter for certain, Kerry Murphy hopefully), and they get back counted to last year’s 25 limit. It looks to be another great class, and who does not believe Saban will close really strong?

25 limit

do we get 25 every year?

Limit

You can bring in a maximum of 25 each year, and you’ve got a scholarship limit of 85. So obviously, you can’t bring in 25 each year without some attrition since having 25 each year would put you at like 100 or more scholarship players.
