BCS Selection Show Open Thread
It hasn't quite been 24 hours yet, but we're moving on from yesterday's loss early and looking forward to the bowl game. Odds are we're in the Sugar Bowl against either Utah or Ohio State, but we won't know for certain 'til 7:00pm CST. Give us your thoughts on who you think we'll play and who you want to play before the selections are handed down, and then hang around to discuss the Tide's opponent and all the other matchups for the postseason.

I would prefer getting Ohio State to Utah just because they are a bigger name-brand, and frankly I’m not sure that Utah isn’t the better team.
Of course, if you lose to Utah you get Boise-ed, but honestly, it would probably be even more embarrassing to lose to Ohio State.
I don’t think it really matters one way or the other. If we play like we should then we will beat either of the two, and if we don’t and we lose, it’s embarrassing as hell either way.

If there's one hard lesson our program has learned over the past decade....
…it’s not to overlook ANYBODY.
Central Florida
Northern Illinois
Louisiana Tech
Louisiana-Monroe
Utah is better than all of them, yet we fell to all of them.
+1
I want OSU, but think we’ll get Utah. Four BCS bowls break down as follows:
Fiesta: Big 12 vs at-large
Sugar: SEC vs at-large
Orange: ACC vs Big East
Rose: Pac-10 vs Big 10
This year the Fiesta picks the first at-large team, and it’s hard to think they wouldn’t pick Ohio State. Sugar bowl gets leftovers, and because of the rules they would have to pick Utah. We get Utah, which means no love if we win, and all the hate and blame in the country if we lose.

what are the odds...
we get #2 in the BCS and get a rematch with FL?
Yea, I know, it’s near impossible.
Someone kindly...
post who we get to play in NOLA. I’m marooned on Bryant Drive studying torts w/no TV…
Agree
Plus I like the mormons. They seem nice:) And when we beat the hell out of tOSU, that will be 3 years in a row of them losing to an SEC team in a bowl game. Flipside is, I live 10 minutes from University of Phoenix/Cardinal’s Stadium and would love to get to watch Texas stomp Ohio State. Win Win for me:)
Texas Tech
For purely personal reasons in that my father-in-law is high enough up the food chain at TTU to get several box tickets. So, I would gladly suffer through being surrounded by a bunch of folks with guns up, to get to be in a bowl box!!!!
marycontrary
Exactly.
OU is going to the title game, and Texas will get an automatic bid by being a non-conference champ in the top 4 of the BCS standings. No conference can have more than two teams in the BCS, so Tech is out.
Technically...
…not true. You could have two teams from the same conference in the BCS title game, and have a third team in another BCS game. I found that out the other day, and thought it was pretty interesting.
I would much rather play OSU
Utah just doesn’t get any respect. If we lost to them, we would be all over the sports media, but not in the good way. Plus, I think Utah would be a blowout honestly.
36-0
Fox has the official one at 8:00, but the show is 30 minutes long and only touches on the BCS games. ESPN has their overall bowl selection show on at 8:00, which is three hours long and covers every bowl.
If you want to know the official participants at the absolute earliest possible moment, you’ll get that on Fox since they have the BCS contract.
You asked
2 questions—and I answered teh second one—who I WANT to play. Purely selfish, I admit, but everyone one of you would want the same thing if he was your dad-in-law. Two years ago, he kept getting mad at me because I wanted “his” coach. But that was because I thought CNS was a no-can-do. So glad we got Nick!!!
marycontrary
I would say
I would rather play Ohio State just for tradition sake; but the thought of putting a hellacious beating on Utah a la Georgia-Hawaii last year would be just as fun. Would you want to play a thoroughly pissed off Crimson Tide team in New Orleans?
I can’t believe the season is almost over.
Alabama judges its team by national and SEC titles. Auburn judges its team by how many times it beats Alabama. You tell me who the dominant team in the state is.
Is there any way
we could finish the season ranked no 2?
i know it doesnt really matter but i’d love it.
im not impressed with your performance
I think so
No less than 3 for sure.

if texas wins and OU v UF is close
bama could finish below 3 even if they win.
man this show’s guy is really freakin annoying

The Rose Bowl
should actually be a good game. I hate SC.

Oh come on

No doubt
the Orange Bowl used to be one of the best. Does Brian Kelly look like ‘hey, someone PLEASE hire me out of here?’

Anyone notice...
how ESPN doesn’t have Bama’s helmet on the stage? They have Penn State and tOSU for crying out loud!
yeah!!!
I saw that right when i turned on the TV and immediatly changed the channel…..after going toe to toe with the greatest most wonderful awesomest team ever to play the game of college football, we still aren’t getting respect!
(can you tell im still bitter?)

I'm going to the Rose Bowl...
Because my dad is a USC season ticket holder, I’m going to watch USC pummel Penn State. I’ll be in Alabama gear, being hated by both USC and Penn State fans. Hopefully I’ll be able to bring a sign saying something to the effect of “Roll Tide from California”.
You think the Trojans win?
I might be wrong, but I think PSU wins that one.

Game-changing performance:

Hell Yes
We beat Utah like a red headed step child. There is no way we get Boise-d. These seniors do NOT go out without a win.

So a plus one would be
Oklahoma vs. Alabama and Florida vs. Texas. Who wouldn’t want to see those games?
WHY ARENT WE DOING THAT!!
I have said it for years that a plus one system wuld be the perfect solution. BSC bowls still get there love and teams like Utah, Boise and even Cinci have a shot at the title…..what is wrong with this plan?
When you are an Alabama fan you have to hate Auburn, I hate Tennessee because i want to.
Don't get me wrong
I frickin’ hate the BCS, and I agree a plus one is an improvement. Problem is this: As much as I would love to see the tide in a nc, with a plus one like this, we beat OK, Florida beats TX, and then we play FL again. It was a great game, even though we lost, but I wouldn’t wanna watch it again in a few weeks. They beat us fair and square. Even if we won, then we both have one win against each other. Best two out of three? It just doesn’t work.

wtf...why is the bcs so horrible
wouldnt it make some sense to at least have 1vs2, 3vs4, 5vs6 and so on. what are the polls even for? THANK GOD FOR THE NFL..GO BENGALS
Who the heck is Utah?
I just don’t see what we have to gain except one more win. Maybe it’s above my head but I just don’t get it.
Rex E Mathis
Well,
The MWC is better than at least the Big East this season, and you could make a case that it’s better than the Pac-10 too. Utah as its champion is just as worthy as Cincinnati is.
That said, if this was the 2004 Ute team I’d say Bama might be in trouble. This one is not nearly as good, so if Saban can keep the team focused (and he will), the Tide should win by 2 or 3 touchdowns.
Utah,...
…is a very good football team. I think we should win it handily, but we can’t take them for granted or we’ll get Boised.
Pride and self-respect?
We can’t prepare for opponents based upon their perceived ability to beat us. If Saban’s drilled anything into our kids’ heads it’s that it doesn’t matter who the opponent is. You prepare to dominate from first whistle to last, whether it’s Florida or Florida International. If we wanted our team to play down to its competition we would’ve kept Shula.
"That rug really tied the room together."
I agree
but it won’t help us with recruiting as much as a win over #3 Texas which would help in the poles come years end.
Rex E Mathis
Doesn't matter
Just getting to a BCS bowl in just two years — ahead of expectations — under Nick Saban is much more influential in recruiting than who we play in said BCS game.

I don't understand....
how they can call it a “Bowl Championship Series” and have conference tie-ins….its a complete joke – the Rose Bowl is signed with the Pac-10 and Big 10 through 2012. Boise got completely screwed who wants to watch Texas completely destroy Ohio State.
didn't play that game a few times....
When you are an Alabama fan you have to hate Auburn, I hate Tennessee because i want to.
Utah has a feisty defense
I still don’t know how TCU lost to them, but make no mistake, the Utes D is what kept them in position to win. Good pass rush, hard hitters, this is their Super Bowl. I expect Coach Saban to drill our boys on this fact at least a couple times. I won’t be surprised if it mirrors our games against Tennessee, MSU, and Auburn, but you never know.
"That rug really tied the room together."
How about that GMAC bowl?
Tulsa vs. Ball State. Should be a good matchup for any Mobile Tiders.
I think
lswho gets destroyed as well. If you thought they had trouble stopping the run in other games this season just wait and see what GT does to them.
I read that Miles started making coaching changes
immediately after the Arky game. An effort to save his a**? Maybe that will help somehow. Otherwise, I cannot see a W there!
Block U
JazzyUte over at Utah blog Block U is a cool guy. I know some people are disappointed in the match up, but Utah is a good football team and please show him and his community respect if you go over there.
I hope their blog
has more traffic than Gators do( Which seemed to be slow but with some good fans). Guess I’m spoiled with ours since you shut the open thread down last nite with what(1000 comments) in just a few hours.

SEC Bowl Schedule
Here goes the SEC Bowl Schedule:
Florida v. Oklahoma in the BCSCG
Alabama v. Utah in the Sugar Bowl
Georgia v. Michigan State in the Capital One Bowl
South Carolina v. Iowa in the Outback Bowl
LSU v. Georgia Tech in the Peach Bowl
Kentucky v. East Carolina in the Liberty Bowl
Vandy v. Boston College in the Music City Bowl
All in all, it looks pretty good for the SEC. We should win the BCS title game, two BCS games, and a few more. Probably the only team that won’t be favored will be Vandy, and I don’t think they’ll beat Boston College either. All of the rest of them could be wins, though, but we’ll probably drop a couple. If I had to say, I’d say the smart money is on 5-3.

What about Ole Miss?
I thought they would be going to the Cotton Bowl. Do we just not know yet?

i think the ole miss D, dominates tech
"When you ask me those kind of questions it really pisses me off! aight" - CNS
Yes...
It’s Ole Miss v. Texas in the Cotton Bowl, I just had a typo.
Honestly, though, I figure Ole Miss gets spanked. As much as their pass defense has struggled, Texas Tech should throw for 400-500 yards and rack up a ton of points, assuming Crabtree and Harrell come back healthy.

i kinda thought OK, exposed tech a bit
"When you ask me those kind of questions it really pisses me off! aight" - CNS
That might be fair but...
OK has exposed everyone it’s played, but Texas. They’ve been mowing through everyone. I’m excited about the title game.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
Yeah
if Crabtree and Harrell are healthy then ole miss is in T-R-O-U-B-L-E.
I think 5-3 for the SEC in bowl games is a good bet.
what channels the Sugar Bowl on???
please tell me not CBS
"When you ask me those kind of questions it really pisses me off! aight" - CNS
Hey
did we ever work that deal with Virginia Tech, to open the season next year??
"When you ask me those kind of questions it really pisses me off! aight" - CNS
They're probably still ironing out the wrinkles...
…but I doubt we postpone a game with someone else (were supposed to play Tulane in NOLA) unless they were 99.9% sure it was going to happen.
Early betting lines...
Alabama opened up in Vegas as an 11-point favorite over Utah, with an over / under of about 45 points. In another words, the early money is on a 28-17 Alabama victory.
And get this… Oklahoma is a three point favorite over Florida. If I were a betting man…

Not in Alabama's best interest for gators to win.
We recruit against these guys, and even though it may sound good to say our only loss was to the nat’l champs, it is not a good thing for recruits to see uf in another confetti shower while worshipping the crystal football.
I gotta go with the sooners.
i think Saban will do just fine
recruiting whether Florida wins it or not. LSU won it last year and we still had the #1 class last year.
Basking in another SEC team winning the NC?
Look, the sec is a strong conference year in and year out. We don’t have to prove that by riding uf’s coattails to the national championship. I’ve watched uf and lsu win it recently and quite frankly, it makes me sick.
I know that there’s a strength of schedule thing during the season, I want Bama’s opponents to do well, because of that and that alone, but the season is over now so all that’s out the window. Besides, Clemson uga lsu and other teams we played that didn’t perform as well as expected didn’t keep us from being #1 for almost half the season.
I’m not criticizing anyone who wants to pull for Florida because they’re an SEC team, but I guarantee that fla is playing for fla, not the conference. If I worked in the sec office I’d want all our teams to win, but I’m an Alabama fan, and honestly, I get ZERO satisfaction from another sec team winning the nc. (Actually, I get zero satisfaction from any team winning the nc, the other teams are all the same to me.)
But that’s just me, to each his own.
That's my attitude as well....
…I HATE the SEC! SEC! SEC! chant. We compete for recruits with all of these schools and I know we got a great recruiting class and will get them again in the future, but there’s no telling how that crystal football impacts the decisions of recruits. I just assume it not even factor in the equation.
