All-SEC Team/SEC Coach of the Year

The All-SEC team was released today, and here it is.  There were no major surprises as far as Alabama players go.  I thought Julio probably should have been first-team, but I understand since Alabama does not throw the ball as often as other teams the stats were not there.  I was glad to see Javier Arenas was named second-team All-SEC corner.  It was amazing how much he has improved as far as a corner back.

It should come as no surprise that Nick Saban was named SEC Coach of the Year.  All hail the Dark Lord!  I am not sure what else could possibly be said about this selection as this was probably the easiest choice anyone could make.

Coach of the Year – Tim Tebow

Well, I’ll bet that was Danielson’s vote anyway.

Bitter?

Who is the RB named Time? I have heard of the rest, and they are great.

Nah not bitter

Not going to rehash my thoughts on the game again, but I have said repeatedly tebow is a great player. My point was to make fun of Danielson and CBS in general’s woody for the kid.

Will CBS

Still be broadcasting games next year for the SEC or will ESPN have all the rights?

CBS

CBS gets first choice of all SEC games next year. ESPN will have the rights to every other SEC game.

Hahahaha...

I’m GREAT with the selections. These guys were our difference makers this year. I love that Andre and Rashad were UNANIMOUS selections. I also found it interesting that Julio got Freshman of the Year, not AJ Green, but I think it probably had to do with being a great blocker as well. I hope Coach Saban gets National Coach of the Year too. He deserves ALL the accolades for what he has done with the team this soon.

CBS.....they suck...maybe his mind was on Tebow all night...

“Mark Ingram comes in as quarterback”….wtf…
Jewlio Jones …….. Orlando McCain…….

I did notice

There was fewer commercials during the game. Not a whole lot less but there were fewer.

"And here is your Pontiac Scoring recap...

Alabama gets on the board first as Tim Tebow passes to Carl Moore for the touchdown"

At that point Gary should have told Verne to shut the F- Up. He already had Jewlio with a tackle on special teams coverage, Ingram in at quarterback (as stated above), and then Bama scoring first during the recap. You know with Gary being the know it all, he wanted to just slap Verne throughout this game…

Also

I forgot to mention that Julio was named freshmen of the year. The interesting part was that AJ Green, and fellow freshmen, was named first team All-SEC receiver.

We have got to find a secondary receiver to compliment Julio. He will undoubtably be the best receiver in Alabama history when he leaves.

BJ Scott??

by bammer on Dec 8, 2008 3:28 PM CST up reply actions

Maybe

I would say the player on the roster who is most likely to be a productive receiver is Darius Hanks. He has shown an ability to get off of man coverage, and his route running has really improved. Obviously, there are plenty more athletic players that will hopefully improve with another year of learning, and strength and conditioning.

Also, did anyone else notice that Mike McCoy has pretty much vanished from the lineup? I think I could count the number of times I saw him lineup in formation on one hand in the Florida game. Nikita Stover has augmented McCoy in the two wide receiver sets, and appears to be a really good blocker. I just never saw him getting open consistently.

Also

What happened to Maze…i know he got that TD against AU but i didn’t even see him on the field against UF. With all that speed….i thought we’d see a lot more of him.

When you are an Alabama fan you have to hate Auburn, I hate Tennessee because i want to.

by bammer on Dec 8, 2008 3:47 PM CST up reply actions

Maze

He made it on the field a couple of times, but Maze seems one-dimensional. He is great at the go route, but does not appear to be very useful for going over the middle. He also seems to lack an ability to work seams, and get open in zone coverage.

Also, with his size I doubt he is a very good run blocker, something that is absoloutely necessary if you are going to play on our offense. Maze does come on the field in multiple wide receiver sets.

The other receiver that no one talks about is Brad Smelley. Smelley would line up in four receiver slots, and would run the Dallas Clark routes that are so often seen in the Colts offense. I think Smelley has a bright future.

Eric Berry?!?!

defensive player of the year? Are you kidding?

by brandonh on Dec 8, 2008 4:25 PM CST reply actions

Berry - no kidding

He’s ridiculous. If I could only take 1 player from the conference to build my defense around, he’d be my choice.

by skigator93 on Dec 8, 2008 7:57 PM CST up reply actions

I would be delighted with Spikes

But his supporting cast is 10x better than Berry’s. Berry is on an island.

by skigator93 on Dec 9, 2008 8:57 AM CST up reply actions

I'm pretty sure that Berry solo tackled...

Tebow multiple times in his game against FLA. He has already set a record for INTs and Pick 6s in the SEC, and he’s only a Sophomore…

by TopDaddy on Dec 9, 2008 2:48 PM CST up reply actions

You might be right about that

I can’t remember specifically, but I wouldn’t doubt it. I’m sure it stung him a little though…..Tennessee was horrendous this season, but imagine how much worse they would have been without Berry’s picks and TDs….

by skigator93 on Dec 9, 2008 7:06 PM CST up reply actions

It's just too bad that Berry...

has been on a bad team this year, because he’s got Charles Woodson written all over him. He’s amazing, but if you don’t have another decent corner to compliment you, then all you have to do is a quarterback is to throw away from Berry. He’s REALLY good, IMO.

Here’s one of the tackles on Tebow. After seeing Tebow this weekend, this is just really impressive to me.

Media Hype

I agree here. Tim tebow is a great player but I think he gets too much hype. The media loves him and honestly I would feel the same way if he had chose Bama. Personally I think JPW did an outstanding job this year and he did it with class and style. I hope his replacement is that much better. I said last year we formed it up by getting some coaching then the recruiting class laid the foundation, this season started to frame it now lets finish the Mansion and live there for a long time. Roll Tide to everyone

Tebow

Will not be a next level QB….he knows it and thats why he will come back next year. He’s a full back that throws pretty good. That will NOT equate to a NFL QB. He’ll get drafted just because of his name but he won’t last and will probably never see the field as a full time starter. After what Matt Ryan has done this year, thats the model all NFL scouts will be looking for. Sorry but thats truth

When you are an Alabama fan you have to hate Auburn, I hate Tennessee because i want to.

by bammer on Dec 8, 2008 9:00 PM CST up reply actions

I didn't know

that NFL prospects matter in measuring the talent of a college QB. Here’s my prediction – Matthew Stafford is the most overated QB in college football. I think he will be a collossal failure in the NFL. I have heard about his arm strength and footwork and release for 3 years now, yet every game, I see him overthrow wide open receivers, throw behind guys on crossing routes and throw horrendous picks. ESPN projects him as the #1 overall pick?!?! Welcome to Detroit kid. He has all the qualities of the next Joey Harrington.

by skigator93 on Dec 9, 2008 9:04 AM CST up reply actions

I would have said the same thing

About Matt Ryan as you did about Stafford and we have all seen what Ryan has done. Tebow will get drafted no doubt but he needs to work on somehting before i think of him as a NFL QB.

Foot work and arm strength.

He throws a very nice deep ball but when he winds back, he has a tendency to be off target. He also gets happy feet…

by bammer on Dec 9, 2008 9:20 AM CST up reply actions

Stafford...

…does have very good arm strength, footwork, and release. It’s his lack of accuracy that makes me think he will not last long in the NFL. For his sake, I hope I’m wrong, but I won’t lose much sleep over it either way. We won’t play him again…until next year in Atlanta.

by NiceLittleSaturday on Dec 9, 2008 10:04 AM CST up reply actions

next year in Atlanta?

Are you referring to the Falcons/Lions game??!?!

If you think a guy projected to be the top pick overall in the NFL draft is going to come back for his senior year, especially when a new CBA is projected to severely lower the top picks’ salaries starting in 2010, then you must be a UGA fan in disguise!

by skigator93 on Dec 9, 2008 10:28 AM CST up reply actions

That...

…was too easy, and so fun. No, I don’t think he’s coming back, but thanks for playing.

by NiceLittleSaturday on Dec 9, 2008 10:51 AM CST up reply actions

Not so sure

that Tebow couldn’t make it as a QB in the pros. I don’t follow NFL closely, but there aren’t too many superstar QBs I can think of at too many teams, so he might have a shot. His footwork/release/etc might need a good bit of work, and he can forget about running over NFL linebackers like he does in college; However, anyone who says he is only a decent passer didn’t see the impossible throws he made to beat us in the SECCG. At least two of the TDs were truly indefensible. True, he may not make it at the next level, but I wouldn’t count him out either.

Note: This was partly written in hopes that Tim Tebow may read this and use it as a rationale to go pro this year.

by bamabrian on Dec 9, 2008 1:39 AM CST reply actions

Tebow and CBS.

Danielson is God-awful. As a Gators fan, I couldn’t stand his love of Matt Stafford regardless of how poorly he played. I also think that the media goes off the deep-end with the Tebow love, but it’s hard not to gush over the kid. He’s an iconic college football player and a great guy. I understand people who are tired of the hype, but it’s not his fault, so try not to hate him for it.

Here we go again: http://thefulldeck.blogspot.com/

by ejruiz on Dec 9, 2008 4:02 AM CST reply actions

I disagree on Danielson

He is outstanding – Tebow gushing aside, as I can see how that would become annoying fast.
He is so much better than Blackledge, he almost makes Lundquist tolerable. Remember, that he has to spend half the game correcting Verne’s blunders – wrong name calling, etc.

He knows the game.

yeah

they only reason you don’t hate him is bacause he loves your team. I never heard him say anything bad about UF….EVER!

You guard #63 kicking our guy in the head at the end of the game, but thats about it.

Yeah, all he said was...

“Hey, #63 just kicked Fanney in the head, I hope he doesn’t get tossed out of this game because that means suspension for the first half of the NC game.” Bang up play by play, fellas…

Actually

I just like that he knows what is going on and is quick to point out things so that viewers can see them on the replays. It’s a heck of a lot better than seeing which local eatery Blackledge stuffed his face at the night before!

As for Verne, I think he’s as much in touch with the game as Bobby Bowden. I watched the replay on TIVO and was wishing he would stop with the Bronco Nagurski stuff.

by skigator93 on Dec 9, 2008 10:31 AM CST reply actions

When I heard on the replay

I thought that was Verne because he does that about 6 times a game. I didn’t say the guy never makes mistakes, just that he does a great job and he knows the game.

by skigator93 on Dec 9, 2008 1:39 PM CST reply actions

I was referring to Verne as well....

cueing off your last sentence about the Bronco Nagurski stuff.

by yellowhammer on Dec 9, 2008 1:48 PM CST up reply actions

ok - whew

I didn’t think that was Danielson, but surely wasn’t paying close enough attention to say so! Verne is a knucklehead. Back when Eli Manning played at Ole Miss, I saw a game where he called him Archie once and Peyton twice – all before halftime!
