Biggest game in Utah history
Remember when the '91 Fiesta Bowl was "the biggest game in Louisville history!" Man, I sure hope this turns out better for us...

Last year's Sugar Bowl
was the biggest game in Hawaii’s history too.
Alabama judges its team by national and SEC titles. Auburn judges its team by how many times it beats Alabama. You tell me who the dominant team in the state is.

The way I see it.
As storied and rich as our history is, we have never even been to a BCS bowl. Utah, on the other hand, has been and is currently undefeated in BCS bowls (1-0). In fact, BCS busters have a winning record versus the BCS conferences (2-1).
If anyone is foolish enough to believe we can waltz in to NOLA and swat away a pest, I believe you are mistaken and need to reassess your position.
Our team is talented and works hard, but one shred of complacency can make us the laughingstock of the country and prove how foolish we all were to proclaim we are “back”.

We have been to a BCS Bowl
…the Orange Bowl against Michigan and we lost 35-34 in OT.

No..
The BCS started in 1998, with the first ever BCS Championship Game coming with Tennessee v. Florida State in the Fiesta Bowl.
The 2000 Orange Bowl was a BCS game. We won the SEC that year, but couldn’t go to the Sugar Bowl that season because that was the site of the national championship game that season (Florida State v. Virginia Tech).

When you are an Alabama fan you have to hate Auburn, I hate Tennessee because i want to.

Roger that.
So 0-1 vs 1-0, so even more so than I mistakenly alluded to.
1998 hmmm, why would I not remember that…oh right, I was probably stoned out of my gourd…

burned in my memory
i’ll always remember that game because it was shaun alexander vs. tom brady. we fought the entire game, and lost because of a MISSED PAT in overtime.

We lost...
…because Big Sam didn’t play.

Which reminds me...
…somebody said recently at this site that Andre Smith was the best left tackle they had ever seen. Do y’all really think he’s better than Chris Samuels was? I’m not saying he’s not a great player — he clearly is. He has had a great career. But I’ve never seen anything like the senior season that Chris Samuels had in 1999. No sacks allowed. 89 pancakes. It was unreal. Whaddya think, Bama fans?

samuels and alexander were unstopable together
maybe andre will stick around for his senior year and we’ll get a chance for a more accurate comparison. but as of now, i’m leaning towards samuels…

Yes...
I remain unconvinced. AS > CS. Samuels got stronger as the years went on…Andre came in as a man, and is far more physical.

Did I stir a stink?
with my Hawaii comparison?
Some may have taken offense. My comparison isn’t X’s and O’s or stats and scores, but that a BCS buster isn’t going to sneak up on anyone, especially our guys. This may a big game for them, but it’s a huge game for us too.

I sound more dramatic than I actually meant
I am meerly trying to say It is just as important for us as fans to not be complacent, as it is for our team. I know the coaching staff will skull drill that this is the biggest game season for us also.

Eh, it's not that...
I don’t think anyone really believes the Hawai’i comparison simply because this team is nothing like Hawai’i.
With all due respect to the artists formerly known as the Rainbows, that just wasn’t a very good team. That bunch had a laughingstock schedule full of terrible teams, and still needed miracles left and right to stay unbeaten. They needed a last-second field goal to squeak by a 6-7 Nevada team, a furious comeback to beat a 5-7 San Jose State team in overtime, and then needed another huge comeback to beat a 4-9 Washington team (their only BCS conference opponent). Bottom line, that bunch never had any business being in any bowl aside from the Hawai’i bowl, much less a BCS bowl, and UGA really did nothing more than reveal them to be the frauds that they were.
This Utah squad, though, is much more along the lines of 2006 Boise State. It’s a good team with good coaching and a talent level that’s a lot better than you would think. Moreover, they’ve actually beaten some dang good teams… for example Oregon State, BYU, and TCU. This certainly isn’t a team that has gotten by on extreme amounts of luck and a criminally weak schedule, it’s a quality foe.
Now, of course, we are the favorite, and we do have more talent, depth, and better coaching. We should win this game, hence why we are a two-score favorite. However, it’s not a slam dunk case. This is a pretty good football team, and one very much capable of pulling the upset. They are ranked #6 in the BCS, and while they really aren’t that good, I do think it’s clear that they are easily one of the top twenty teams in the country, and clearly a group good enough to beat us if we don’t play like we should.

January 2, 2009, Utah is Auburn
That’s the only way to look at it, in my opinion. We need to practice like we’re playing the best team in the country January 2, 2009. This needs to be our best game of the season.
Why?
Because Utah wants us to overlook them. They want us to be overconfident. They want to play up the underdog, us against the world thing and we need to take that angle away immediately by treating them with this sort of respect.
They want a lot of things and we should not give them any of them. We need to treat them like they’re the New York Giants in Auburn’s uniform. We need to hate Utah and play with a serious chip on our shoulder. Utah is the bad guy. We must hate Utah. Utah deserves our complete attention. They have disrespected us. They have spit on our program and our tradition.
They don’t respect us. They think they will beat us. They laugh at us. They think we’re overrated.
This is the mentality.

I'm serious
Utah is going to use that, “Nobody is giving us a chance” angle…take it away. Don’t let them be the good guy. Don’t let them have the sympathy they want.
Underdog teams thrive on this sort of thing. They will try to turn people against us if we don’t handle this right.
