Bama v. Georgia Tech -that's what I'm talkin' about!

Here is some interesting, random football news that was released earlier today. It seems the Alabama-Clemson season opener of 2008 won't be the last time the Crimson Tide play in Atlanta.

Alabama and Georgia Tech have agreed to a home-and-home series during the 2013 and 2014 season. (Man, that sounds far away.) UA hosts the Yellow Jackets in 2013, then plays in Atlanta's Bobby Dodd Stadium at Historic Grant Field in 2014.

Here is the release: Click me (and scroll down).

Seems this focus on Atlanta for recruiting will extend into stuff relating to the schedule.

Actually, not all of this is completely new. Alabama Athletics Director Mal Moore told me during the 2006 season that Georgia Tech was scheduled for the 2010-11 season. Apparently, that has been moved back a few years.

We'll...
...be playing Penn State in the next few years too. We're definitely stepping up the scheduling.

Great move
This has been on the books for a bit now, and I have to say that I love it. I think a lot of people are unaware of just how intense the rivalry was with Georgia Tech when it reached its crescendo in the early 1960's. At the time, it was probably even above the Auburn or Tennessee rivalry in terms of intensity. I'm sure many of you can remember the picture of Bryant walking off the field wearing a football helmet, attempting to avoid getting hit in the head with the bottles that were being thrown.

I'm glad we're going to have a renewal of this one. And it will be some tough match-ups because Georgia Tech and Paul Johnson, I'm sure, will have the triple-option running almost to perfection by that point.

My
My parents HATE Georgia Tech (and Tulane for that matter) so it goes to show that the older generation has hung on to old SEC rivalries.

Plagerism!
Just to clarify, I pasted the original post from Rappaport's blog. I just noticed the part about speaking to Mal Moore. Don't want anyone to get the impression that I know or speak to Mal Moore.

The link on his blog from al.com takes you to Tech's site.
