Your RBR Friday Random Ten

For those of you that don't know how to play, put your iPod/iTunes/Zune/whatever on shuffle and list the first ten songs that come up in the comments. No cheating to make yours look cooler, so if that copy of Touch My Body "your girlfriend downloaded on your laptop" comes up, be prepared for some merciless ridicule.

My Teddy Bear was in the mood for classic rock this week.

1. AC/DC - Highway to Hell
2. Eric Clapton - Afer Midnight
3. Robert Earl Keen - Merry Christmas From the Family
4. Johnny Cash - Like a Soldier
5. Shelby Lynne - Where I'm From
6. Bob Dylan - Make You Feel My Love
7. Led Zeppelin - That's the Way
8. Hot Tuna - Rock Me Baby
9. Van Halen - When It's Love
10. Ryan Adams - Nobody Girl

OK, I had to shuffle twice this morning!
Hey, what can I say? My Friday 10 was looking a lot like Todd's (I DEFINITELY have too much Johnny Cash, Van Halen, Rush, Genesis, and Scorpions)

At least on this shuffle, there's more of a "modern" take on my current musical tastes. Ahem.

  1. Radiohead - Bodysnatchers
  2. P.I.L (Public Image Limited) - Socialist
  3. Gnarles Barkley - Who's Going To Save My Soul?
  4. Meredith Bragg - My Absent Will
  5. Intercooler - Wasted My Day
  6. Mortal Coil - Fyt
  7. Kraak and Smaack - To Everyone Who Has
  8. Dirty South vs. Evermore - It's Too Late
  9. Anushka Shankar - Easy Feat Norah Jones
10)Little Dragon - Test

sidenote: tristarcorp's Gaelic Storm and Kleph's Hoodoo Guru jams are my favorites so far for the day. way to go RBR'ers! radical calls on those two.

hoodoo gurus
thanx man. that album, Mars Needs Guitars, was bolted on my turntable when i was at bama.

by kleph on Mar 14, 2008 11:08 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Bittersweet
Who can't remember that song from Mars Needs Guitars? Great music and awesome lyrics on that album. My sister bought "Stone Age Romeos", and from that ONE album, my whole family got into Australian rock.

Imagine seeing your 44 year old mother rocking to Nick Cave and/or Midnight Oil- not to mention the Gurus- and 5 older sisters blaring it in the morning while they got ready for school? That was my childhood. (and I'm a better person for it)

I'm still listening to all that music!

by tapout on Mar 14, 2008 11:46 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

the gurus
stoneage romeos is one of the greatest albums of the 80s. period.

by kleph on Mar 14, 2008 2:32 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

You're all crazy...
...Electric Youth was the best Album of the 80s, followed closely by Making it Big. If you know who those two albums were made by without looking it up, then you may join me now in hanging your head in terrible, terrible shame.

by Todd on Mar 14, 2008 2:42 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I give
Considering you invoked "shame" in your clue- I'll take a stab at this (without looking up anything). Here goes:

Electric youth = that little boy band who helped sing that song Double Dutch Bus (coming down the street, moving kinda fast so better shuffle your feet. . . .)

Making it big = another boy band. N-sync or New Kids on the Block or something like that.

by tapout on Mar 14, 2008 4:48 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Nope...
...and nope. Good try, though.

by Todd on Mar 14, 2008 4:55 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Unfortunately
I know the Electric Youth artist is Debbie Gibson, and the 2nd I will guess that it's Tiffany??

I've heard of Debbie Gibson
But wtf is Tiffany?

I admit, I've led a sheltered life in the Santa Cruz Mountains (Grateful Dead, David Grisman, Eagles-country folk kinda communities) and don't know jack-diddly-squat 'bout Debbie Gibson or a Tiffany.

Guess I'm shameless? (oh if you only knew)

by tapout on Mar 14, 2008 7:52 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

LOL
That's great that you grew up on that music. Those are some fantastic groups and players of fine music.
I wasn't so sheltered as you put it. I grew up on all kinds of music, bluegrass, rock, pop, rap, heavy metal, punk, gospel and continually finding new music. To fill you in a bit...Tiffany was part of the whole mall teenie bopper phase in the 80's, as was Debbie Gibson...long before she decided to show her stuff in Playboy!!! RTR!

I can't imagine...
...my mom listening to Nick Cave. I'm a huge fan though (and I love Midnight Oil.) Go Aussies!

I finally figured out my mom was
a bigger fan of Nick Cave than I was, when she bought me his book, "And the Ass Saw the Angel" for my 14th birthday (it had been out for about 3 years, and I didn't even know about it at the time).

Blew me away. It was at that young age that I realized my mom and dad were actually pretty "cool" in the grand "adolescent" scheme of things. I almost felt stupid to have kick-ass parents. (nothing to "rebel" against really. truly, a punk without much of an angle)

by tapout on Mar 15, 2008 9:57 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I guess...
...you've seen "The Proposition" and heard Grinderman?

I'm trying to go to Greece this summer and my tentative dates have me there whilst Nick Cave is there. :)

Roll Tide!

by Nico2.0 on Mar 15, 2008 11:54 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Haven't seen "The Proposition"
but definitely got GRINDERMAN.

GRINDERMAN is one of the best Nick Cave collaborations I've ever heard. I dig The Birthday Party, but GRINDERMAN is insane (No Pussy Blues, Honey Bee, and Love Bomb !!! Capital shit).

I wanna get his book of lyrics. Sidenote: I had a party at my place here in Santa Monica this past summer- and someone lifted my Abattoir Blues Tour compilation??? Still haven't replaced it.

I heard a lot about The Proposition, haven't seen it, nor heard the entire soundtrack.

I hope you make it to Greece, and to see Nick Cave there should be the shit! Where in Greece? Lemme know if you're into Homer (Greek mythology)- I've got the best translation of The Iliad and The Odyssey on the planet. I've been there twice. Ridiculously hospitable people, and lovely lovely women.

Not a Random Ten, but a cool find...
Bama Anthem by the 63 Boyz. I'm not a big rap fan, but given they use Rammer Jammer in it, it's definately worth listening to. Came out this past December, so check it out if you can.

by BigBamaDaddy on Mar 15, 2008 1:15 AM CDT   0 recs

so...
I guess it's my steeze to be late with the Random Ten...but I'm just saving the best for last...oh, and I'm only 8 hours ahead of everyone in Alabama now...
  1. Jay-Z - Allure
  2. Linkin Park - Forgotten
  3. Grap Luva - Check The Clock
  4. Cool Kids - A Little Bit Cooler
  5. Young Gunz - No Better Love feat. Rell

  7. Bob Marley - Keep On Moving
  8. Kooley High - Rainy Days

So there you go...some Jigga, some rock, some jazz-ish (Corinne), (of course) some Ghost and continuing this week's tradition of Bob Marley. pretty good 10 IMO...peace...
