Oh RBR Random Ten, Don't Let 'em Steal Your Heart Away

I'm gonna learn to dance if it takes me all night and day...

Since the iPod started us off right with a little Chuck Berry, I thought I'd post this clip from the amazing Hail! Hail! Rock N' Roll documentary of him performing Carol with Keith Richards and just generally being kind of a pain in the ass about the "right" way to play the opening lick. If you haven't seen that movie, you have to rent it this weekend if only for the hilarious and constant bickereing between Berry and Richards and the incredible "my, Keef is looking a healthy shade of blue today, isn't he?" drunken moment after the concert where Richards details how proud he is that Berry once punched him in the face and he didn't fall down. Just an amazingly revelatory documentary. I think I'm going to Best Buy tonight to pick up a copy....

1. Chuck Berry - Carol
2. Pat Green - Threadbare Gypsy Soul
3. John Hartford - Because of You
4. George Strait - You Look So Good in Love

7. Miles Davis - Dr. Jackle
8. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - As Sure as the Sun

I've seen them...
...twice before. On the OK Computer tour in Atlanta and on The Bends tour in Birmingham (opening for R.E.M.) so I'm excited about it because it's been forever since I've seen them.

I can't imagine seeing them somewhere like Reading! A friend of mine is going to see them in Manchester later this year though.

I would...
have to say Reading was the best Concert/Festival I have seen. 3 days of just top notch perforamces by some really great performers. It was also, the first time I saw Queens of the Stone Age. Nick Oliveri was naked playing bass, but other than that great show.
It was 4 stages of whatever you wanted to hear. If you ever get a chance GO! You will not reget spending the cash.

"I want my, I want my. . . . ."
Money for nothing and chicks for free? That would be sweeeeet! But, no- for the life of me, I can't get any of the Fugazi I got to hit it early in my random 10's !!!!! Almost 5 weeks straight too! So, here it goes nonetheless:
  1.  "Would" - Alice in Chains
  2.  "What Else is New" - Dinosaur Jr.
  3.  "He's Solid Gone" - June Carter Cash
  4.  "Have a Cigar" - Pink Floyd
  5.  "All Mine" - Portishead
  6.  "Climax" - Slum Village
  7.  "Too Nice To Talk To - English Beat
  8.  "Can I Kick It" - A Tribe Called Quest
  9.  "Peace Frog" - The Doors
  10. "A Roller Skating Jam Called Saturday" - De La Soul
This stuff was all over the place. My M.I.A. hopeful came in at #14, so big-time-bummer on that one too. I'm saying all this. . . .just so I could put M.I.A. somewhere on my Random 10. (cheater?)

"Yo, slip your butt . . . .
. . .to the fix of this mix. . . ", - you like this pick Spock? A likely story. . . . ? Yeah, though- it IS in the "Desert Island-disc" category, no?

Or what about, ". . .(Is there a Dred on skates?) Yes, man. (So kick the wham on this jam), Oh Mr. Sprinkler, Mr. Sprinkler- Wet me for one, Mr. Sprinkler! I'm heatin' high-five in a daze, no split. . ." - De La Soul's got some vibe bordering on genius! IT IS SATURDAY, btw!

You like any country or ska? Like the June Carter or English Beat licks? The bass on "Too Nice To Talk To" is bump-cityyy! And June Carter Cash, well. . .she has the voice of an Angel, as far as I'm concerned.

I KNOW you like soooome country, yes? Anyway- I'm stoked you liked the set- you got me with Slum Village last week. . .so. . . thanks for letting me know and I can't wait to get twisted some more on these RBR Friday 10's. This sh!t is fun!

You keep "makin' it do, baby" - I appeciate your praise RBR King Of Hip-Hop. Take care Spock.

Radiohead :-(
I couldn't really afford tickets to that show.  Also, my 11th song would've been Off The Record by MMJ, for what it's worth.  Props on posting Bodysnatchers--it's a damn good song.

by Bama philosophe on May 2, 2008 2:17 PM CDT   0 recs

Off the Record...
...is the only good thing about Z.

by Todd on May 2, 2008 2:54 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Really?
I think Gideon is a wonderful song.  It's so freaking epic.

Paper's due in 45 minutes!! OMGZ!!

Todd, you were a philosophy major, weren't you?  You take any classes with Norv Richards?  He's a nice guy and a great philosopher, but he grades pretty tough and is consequently causing me much angst right now.

by Bama philosophe on May 2, 2008 3:15 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Gideon...
...just bores me to tears. It's not a bad song, I'll give them that, but I just don't care for it. The rest of the album outside of Off the Record though? Yikes.<p. And yes, I was a philosophy major, but at lowly UAB. Pickup truck alum, at your service.

by Todd on May 2, 2008 3:26 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

UAB has a good department...
I'm guessing you probably took some classes with James Rachels, then.  He's a big-time figure in the field of applied ethics.  I don't agree with hardly any of his views, but he's still really influential.  His son, Stuart, is a prof. in the department in Tuscaloosa.

by Bama philosophe on May 2, 2008 3:36 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I actually...
...never took any classes from Rachels, but I know who he is. The majority of my classes were taken with Mary Wahl, who was probably the coolest professor I ever had. I skipped roughly 75% of all my classes at UAB (I am astoundingly lazy unless it involves watching football or playing PS2 football) and she called me out for missing two straight weeks that was the entire period of time between the first test of the quarter and the second during a review session in which I didn't bother to ask any questions (I think her exact words were "And Todd, why don't you feel like asking any questions about what the test will cover since you skipped EVERY SINGLE CLASS THAT YOU'LL BE TESTED ON AND YOU ARE NOT TO DO THAT AGAIN?!" to which I replied "I make no promises..."). I actually made an A on the test and she was so pissed, but after that (I'm pretty sure that was the second class I took with her, and only the first upper level one so she would actually know who I was instead of a face amongst a sea of hundreds crammed into a lecture hall for PH115: Intro to Ethics) we got along great and she let me pretty well come and go as I pleased so long as I did the readings and wrote good papers. I took several political and legal theory classes from a Professor Arnold (Scott was his first name maybe?) that were all boring as hell, and a Dr. Graham (why can't I remember people's names anymore?) that was the head of the department when I was there. I took one class from him (philosophy of religion) that I was able to do well in, and then took another (don't remember what it was now, but it was something to do with epistemology) but had to drop it because it was WAY over my head. I was only one of three undergrads in the class and he was clearly aiming it at the graduate students so even though we didn't have to do all the extra work they did, what we did have to do was just beyond me. I was great at social and political theory (I actually took enough dual credit philosophy/polisci classes that if I had taken a required political science class that I had no interest in whatsoever I would have had a third major in political science. Kind of wish I had now...), but he was getting a little to Kantian for me in that class and I knew I would wind up failing so I dropped it for some bullshit english class for the easy A and the hours.

Going to see Radiohead in Cleveland, OH.  Didn't get tickets for the Atlanta one, because everyone up where I live are taking finals next week, so I wouldn't have anybody to go with. haha.  I can't wait till the Cleveland concert.  I've heard they are an incredible live band, and what y'all are saying only confirms it.
