Your RBR Word of the Day: small beer

small beer \small beer\, noun:
1. Weak beer.
2. Insignificant matters; something of little importance.

adjective:
1. Unimportant; trivial.

After Dubose's unfortunate misunderstanding of what a head coach's job actually entails, it's nice to have a coach that considers playing golf and hobknobbing with the boosters small beer annoyances to be avoided unless absolutely necessary.

Do you like this story?

That picture
was taken the day DuBose beat Brother Oliver in 1998, which, coincidentally, was our last "home" victory over Auburn, and the last Iron Bowl played at Legion Field.  I could tell you a story or two about the men carrying DuBose in that picture, but I don't think it's right, so I won't.  They were characters, to put it lightly.

beer!
I love beer. Any other homebrewers on rbr?

Unfortunately Alabama has some restrictive laws w/r/t alcohol content. So, by law, Alabamians can't enjoy big beers. How goes the abv bill anyway?

It's passed...
...the State House and is likely to go before the Senate this week. Call your reps!

I love beer too! i used to brew my own about 5 yrs ago in England. I just have moved around and deployed to much to really keep doing it. I would really like to start back up though. How long have you been brewing?

re: wow...
you should start back up for sure - is a satisfying hobby no doubt. Right now enjoying the hell out of a sierra nevada clone I tapped just last weekend

My friend and I have been doing it since last fall, we started on saturdays while watching football. Been homebrewing constantly since and still learning and still enjoying it. Now that the weather has turned we've been able to brew more.

If you don't mind terrible sophomoric humor and a few profanities you can check out here: http://gamedaybrewery.blogspot.com

Funny..
I like the web site. I'm in the military so profanity does not bother me at all. Also, me and my bud that was stationed in England were the brewers, and I guess we made more Guinness than anything else( very potent stuff I might add! 10%-14% vol ), but we made some wine along with some Honey Meade. It didn't turn out like I thought it would, but hey, lesson learned.

It should come up this Thursday
The bill is going to most likely come to a vote this Thursday.  It's HB196 - The Gourmet Beer Bill.  You need to call your state Senator and tell them to vote yes on it.  I'm not a homebrewer, but definitely a craft-beer enthusiast and someone who would love to see another ridiculous Alabama law bite the dust.

I just got off the phone...
...with my senator's office and they said he would be voting YES!

To find your state senator, go to this page and enter your zip code:

http://www.legislature.state.al.us/misc/zipsearch.html

If you live in Birmingham or another big city, you may need the additional four digits of your zip code to find the correct rep. There were three senators for my zipcode, but after I entered the "+4" it got me the right one.

hmm...
i've always refrained from plugging Free the Hops on this site, but since it came up...I'm the new chair for the Tuscaloosa/West Alabama chapter of FTH, and we have monthly meetings if anyone's interested. The dates/times are still in a transitional phase, since the old chair has yet to vacate the county. Check out freethehops.org and click on "about us" to get in touch with me and in on the short and nasty of the situation.

I can't speak for OTS and Todd...
...but I know I certainly want the hops to be freed...especially as a frequent patron of J. Clyde.

J. Clyde
I really need to get over there sometime.  I hear they've got a great selection of beer and some great food.
