Your RBR Word of the Day: stormy petrel

stormy petrel \STOR-mee-PET-ruhl\, noun:
1. Any of various small sea birds of the family Hydrobatidae, having dark plumage with paler underparts; also called storm petrel.
2. One who brings discord or strife, or appears at the onset of trouble.

Since none of us actually read mgoblog, we're dependent on Hawkeye State's "Don King as stormy petrel" schtick to let us know Cook is shooting his ignorant, whore mouth off again. Also, if you have a few bucks just laying around, think about sending them over to the Grant Wood Area Chapter of the American Red Cross to help out with relief efforts in Iowa.

Hey Todd

Todd,
I didn’t see an e-mail address for you on here; I’m hoping you’d like to appear on a podcast I do with some colleagues of mine.

It’s at PigskinPodcast.com; we’re doing conference previews right now, and this week we’ll be doing the SEC.

Drop me an e-mail if you have a minute: jhammond@pigskinpodcast.com. Thanks!

What a friggin GREAT word!

I’m a HUGE fan of classical readings (I’m a dork, everyone knows this), and especially a giant fan of the mythical Gods and Goddesses of belief systems of a time long long ago. Ares (Greek God of War) is definitely THE stormy petrel of all-time.

In saying that, I spent almost 2 entire hours this morning searching for the word origins of this “stormy petrel” word. And boy, was that fantastic. To be sure, I found a wonderful amount of references from none other than: Charles Darwin to David Jaffe. Maxim Gorky and Herman Melville, and even encountered awesome information with influences involving Stalin literary motifs! What a wonderful search I had this morning for the etymology of “stormy petrel”. Thanks a super-whole bunch for all the words you’ve previously listed and those that will continue in the near future. You, Nico, and OTS are truly blog deities amongst the many pedestrian bloggers who are mere wannabe’s in comparison.

Bigass phat thumbs up Todd!

[now, do you think I could find my truck to get to work. no wait! one more cup o’ joe first. that’ll do]
