Question about the "A"

I've been a reader for a solid 4 or 5 months now, I just joined today for some reason. Anyways, on to my question, does anyone know why there are two different versions of the script style "A" logo? I Like the current one more, but some people have never even noticed the difference. I started noticing when I realized the "A" on the UofA License Plates was the old one. I don' know, maybe i just missed something somewhere...

There aren't really two different versions, they just changed from a downward sweep...

....to an upward sweep a few years ago. The one with the upward sweep is the current “official” script A (I like the newer one better myself), but there are still enough people with older t-shirts, bumper stickers, whatever floating around that you could see either one anywhere.

I really like the old A with the elephant coming out of it with the banner in its mouth...

of course that was a long time ago but I do believe that logo has all the championships from the 70’s. At least Bama broght back Coke and the Pepsi jinx is over with.

We moved totally away from the elephant

the short-lived elephant over ALABAMA was to replace the old school logo mentioned above, but most folks hated it (me included). It was too busy and I am glad we went with the current logo.

I wouldn't piss off the boys from Alabama . . .

Right...

That logo was a brainchild of Bockrath when he was AD. The basic idea was that a new logo would drive merchandise sales higher, and overall they just wanted to give the logo a “meaner” look.

The problem was that “meaner” equals stupid because it’s a cartoon, and at the end of the day just about everyone hated the thing. I’ve never seen a study on it - and there may not have been one done - but it probably cost the university money because most people didn’t like buying anything with that logo on it. Not surprisingly, after a failed experiment of a few years, we shifted almost wholly to the current script A.

Merchandising, merchandising ...

OTS is right, as usual. It’s all about merchandising. I think that’s why we’ve had so many different logos, so that we’ll all go about and buy more merchandise. I certainly have replaced all my shirts, hats, cups, mugs, shot glasses, underwear (which I probably should have replaced a long time ago anyway), and other various and sundry items since we went to the classy-looking script “A.” I hated the elephant logo because it looked like our version of Auburn’s logo at the time. I mean, what the hell was THAT all about?

However, my favorite logo is still the elephant stepping through the “A” because that’s the banner we’ve one so many championships under. It’s also the logo on the burgee on the bow pulpit of my boat and will remain so until we win a championship under a new logo. That burgee is getting a little worn and faded by the sun and weather, so it hope it happens soon!

I like the old school block A

with the red glowing eyes and the trunk upturned stomping elehant. Nothing said glory days like the old logo on a white plastic “truckers hat”! My grandad and I proudly sported those in the late 1970’s.

I had never seen that logo from ‘52-58, but it says the elephant is holding an ice cream cone. In light of Juwan Simpson’s jerky comment, I find that a little creepy.

Champagne...

Yes it is definitely champagne, and not ice cream. If you have Firefox and the Image Zoom add-on, you can zoom in and see that’s it’s definitely a champagne glass. If you look just below the trunk, you see the bottom stem and the base of the glass, and you can also see the golden amber color of the champagne. The “ice cream” is really just bubbles.
