The RBR Friday Random Ten...

...isn't very random this week. I'm at The Girls, and my iPod is in my car, and I'm too lazy to go get it. Rather than face the embarassment of using her iTunes to compile a list, instead I'll just post ten Queen YouTubes, because Queen f*#$ing rules and you know it. Anywho, since I'm playing fast and loose with the rules this week, y'all can either play like normal or, if you're so inclined, just list ten songs you really like to prove how cool you are.

Don't know who you are or what's your story

But damn homey (homegirl, whatever it takes), your selections contain some serious bands and some serious jams! Totally dig your show. (listening to some Hot Rize right now, goes great with my BBQ pork sandwich).

And Imogen? Sublime.

I know we've had a San Francisco/Bay Area discussion before...

...but it pretty much revolved around Bassnectar. You ever check out any of the other stuff around there like Tabla Beat Science or Cheb I Sabbah?

by Nico2.0 on Jun 27, 2008 3:32 PM CDT up reply actions

No, unfortunately

I’ve been here (prominently) in LA since 2000. When I left The City, I also left “the scene” pretty much. I spun for Twitch and opened some Wicked Crew parties. My “family” is more specifically- Deep and Prog Housel. Taking a trip on the “Way Back” machine, Lorin (Bassnectar) used to go by the name “Loren” from the Sunset Party crew (they created the “free” Strawberry Canyon (Golden Gate Park) and Full Moon (Marina/Berkeley and Fort Funston/Golden Gate Bridge) parties that became a popular venue for the bigger acts like Wicked, Sharon, and Vision crews.

The Asian Underground and Tabla genres produce fantastic beats and shows. Have never attended a show, but have seen certain acts perform in the larger-scope large audience concerts (i.e. Reggae on the River, Burning Man, etc). I dig AU & Tabla, but have yet to attend a live show or advance my home discography. D & B? I got scads!!!!

What I have got in that vein is Tabla Rasa music. (doesn’t contain the electronic elements, mostly just “organic”). John Loughlin, David Byrne, and Peter Gabriel are serious aficionados of that scene. Bill Laswell, is THE guy for AU and Tabla- as well as having his peerless jazz credentials on his palmares.

What do you recommend for TBS and Cheb? How did “Nico’s Greek Adventure” go? Dirt man, I want the dirt?

by BixBeiderbecke on Jun 27, 2008 4:11 PM CDT up reply actions

Forgot the Mc (and then some)

I meant to write “John McLaughlin”. (I was in a hurry to reply to you and I kept getting interrupted. work? people?). And I also just wanted to correlate John McLaughlin and Bill Laswell thusly:
2 all-time Jazz Greats fortunately blessing the masses by being the driving force behind bringing music from sub-Continental India and Asia Minor. Massive, no?

by BixBeiderbecke on Jun 27, 2008 4:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Asian Underground...

...love that stuff. I hope to get to some of those shows someday, though the only place they’re ever even remotely going to come in the South is Atlanta. I just can’t imagine that stuff having much of an audience elsewhere in the region (unfortunately.)

I was mainly mentioning the Cali based Asian Underground folks I knew about, but there are others around the world that are fantastic like MIDIval PunditZ, Karsh Kale, Asian Dub Foundation, etc.

Tabla Beat Science (which is really more of a collective these days) has two albums: Tala Matrix and a double live disc called Live in San Francisco at Stern Grove. Both are awesome, but Tala Matrix is probably the place to start (at least it’s what got me hooked.) It’s a supergroup of sorts: Zakir Hussain, Bill Laswell, Sultan Khan, Karsh Kale, Talvin Singh, Trilok Gurtu, DJ Disk, etc.

I’m just getting into Cheb’s stuff, so I don’t really know where to tell you where to start. I heard a few songs on compilations and was really into them though. Cheb was actually born in Algeria, moved to Paris and now lives in SF. He’s friends with all of those AU guys though and I guess is considered part of that scene.

I would also suggest MIDIval Punditz first, self-titled album. Great stuff. Even Anoushka Shankar (Ravi’s daughter) put out a pretty cool ambient album called Rise.

Nico’s Big Greek Adventure was fantastic man! Beyond amazing. Truly epic. I will post more on it later…or send you an email about it.

Thanks! I’m actually Todd’ s erstwhile buddy in Memphis. I caught Imogen in Nashville about a year and a half ago and it was truly phenomenal. Care to share your random ten with us?

I would. . . .

. . . but I ain’t begots no iPods today. Forgot it was Friday, my last bottle of Balvenie made sure of that last night. All I’ve got is a single disc system here in my office and I will tell you right now: 3 discs are bluegrass, 2 are Earth, Wind, and Fire, 1 is War, 2 classic rock, 5 classical, and 1 is Brazilian disco compilation. Which one shall I put in? (at least you’ll know how my CD player randomed the disc? will it count Todd?)

by BixBeiderbecke on Jun 27, 2008 4:18 PM CDT up reply actions

I'd go Bluegrass #2

but seeing as how it’s sunday night you’re probably back with your ipod and (hopefully) away from the office.
