Ivan Matchett Qualifies
According to published reports by Gentry Estes of the Mobile Press-Register, Alabama signee Ivan Matchett has academically qualified. He will report to Tuscaloosa in the next few days and enroll in the second summer session.
Though the news is a bit expected, it's still good to hear. Matchett was expected to qualify all along, but ended up having to unexpectedly re-take a class. After taking the class in Mobile this past month, he got an 'A' and is now ready to move on. It's good news for the Tide because, though it's not definite, there is a legitimate chance that Matchett could see some playing time this season. We need a physical inside runner, and that is Matchett's forte.
With the recent news, the 2008 recruiting class is all but in the books. There were 30 signees, and four will not enroll -- Kerry Murphy and Brandon Lewis (academics), and Destin Hood and Melvin Ray (MLB). Right now there is only one uncertainty left on the board, and that is Devonta Bolton. Hopefully we'll hear something on him in the next few days, but even if he qualifies we can put Neighbors on the Bryant Scholarship and still have only 25 signees enrolling. All worries about trimming this class down to 25, as expected, have turned out to be wholly unfounded.
We'll pass along the news with Bolton once it comes across, but there is nothing to report at the moment. I'm assuming that he will not be enrolling for the second summer term (at least if he is, we should hear about it soon), but there is a possibility that he will report in August, too.

That is..
great news. We seem to have a plethora of RBs now we just need one to step up and take over between the tackle running, Grant, Upchurch, coffee, lowe, preyear (sp) and now Matchett and Ingram at least there won’t be a lak of competetion.
Auburn fans are like slinkys... not really good for anything but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs.

Total Numbers
Looks like they can get the signing class down to 25, but will the total number of scholarship players be down to 85? I am still unsure about the complete math. Hopefully it’s all in the plan.

Some of the 25...
....will be greyshirts most likely.

Probably not...
Not trying to disagree with you, Todd, but greyshirts are pretty unlikely at this point. I’d ballpark the odds at less than 20% that anyone has to to greyshirt.
With the dismissal of Jimmy Johns, the general consensus is that we are currently at 63 players on scholarship, and that number 63 number includes both Zeke Knight, Prince Hall, and Colin Peek. Though it now seems that Prince Hall may very well return, it’s going to take a very big longshot for Knight to return, so effectively we’re at 62 players even if Hall returns. So, we’re really only needing to clear out two more roster spots to bring in 25.
Colin Peek is a bit of an x-factor. Since the NCAA denied his transfer waiver request, he’s not going to play this year, and there’s a lot of speculation that he will not be on scholarship until he actually plays. That’s a legitimate point, and it may be true.
Beyond that, you can rest assured that we have a couple of more casualties on the way somewhere. There has been a lot of talk that a particular player, one who will go unnamed here, is going to transfer, and there is usually a wild card or two when the reporting roster is released in the Fall.
Right now, the odds of anyone having to greyshirt are quite low. And make no mistake about it, the staff does not want anyone to greyshirt either. Greyshirting is nothing more than robbing Peter to pay Paul, you sacrifice signing more players one year by having to sign fewer the next year. Anybody who greyshirts this year will be one (or more) fewer player(s) that we can sign in the 2009 class, and you know Saban does not want that.
