Ken Stabler Taking One Year Leave of Absence
According to published reports by the Tuscaloosa News, Alabama color commentator Ken Stabler will be taking a one year leave of absence from the broadcast booth, and thus will not be doing color commentary for the 2008 season.
I have no clue about the specifics of this yet -- a statement from Leerfield Communications is supposed to be coming soon -- but you would think this has something to do with the his recent DUI arrest. We'll see shortly.
At this point, let the speculation begin as to who will replace Stabler in the booth. Barry Krauss came on board last year as the sideline reporter, but I doubt he will make the jump to the booth. If I had to wager, I'd say the smart money is on either Tyler Watts or Jay Barker.

Correct Nico
Roberts is a good announcer type, but does he have experience as a color man?

Roberts...
Thankfully I don’t listen to too many games on the radio these days, or I would loathe Roberts. He was bad as a sideline reporter - hence why Krauss came on board last year - and I’m afraid he’ll be a disaster in the booth.

At least it's not Jay Barker
I am convinced there is cheese running through his veins.

Barker wouldn't be that bad...
...but I’d much prefer Watts.

Still don't get it.
I guess I am still in the minority that does not quite get what Stabler’s personal activity has to do with his job as a color commentator. He is not a public servant or in a position of public trust. I understand that maybe it casts a bad light on the University, if he worked for the university. What is wrong with a drunk commentator?
I can remember being a kid in Huntsville, AL , not particularly a baseball fan and certainly having no ties with Chicago, but I actually became a pseudo Cubs fan because of Harry Carrey. I just loved watching that drunk man try to lead “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” in the 7th inning stretch when he could barely complete a sentence. The further into the game he got, the less relevance the on field activities had to do with just whatever the hell he felt like talking about. I remember thinking that if I was listening to this on the radio I am not sure I would know I was listening to a baseball game.
As long as the term “midget porn” is a household word I am not going to be able to pass judgement on snake or anyone else…. and that is not my fault either. It is not my fault that midget porn are the only videos that look proportional on my I-Pod.
Anyway, don’t hate on me too much for this post. it’s not necessary. In a few hours I will sober up, wake up , reread it and say out loud… “holy shit, that was stupid!”
My vote is for Jay Barker.

Michael David Smith of AOL Fanhouse is reporting that someone seems to be regularly deleting mentions of Stabler’s DUI arrest from his Wikipedia entry.

Barker
I am a HUGE fan of Snake doing the broadcast. His insight is fantastic, and his patter is second to none. I wish he weren’t out this year-but it’s better than them firing him (which certainly could have happened-even though I agree with LifelongBammer, it has nothing to do with his ability).
I didn’t think Barry did all that good last year on the field. My dad loves Jay Barker on the radio, and yeah, he’s clean-cut, but I think it would be a good match.
Never quit. It is the easiest cop-out in the world.

Like sandman227...
After watching Roger Shultz in an interview on the Cecil Hurt show, I think he would have been a perfect fit. Check it out on www.tidesports.com.
