50 Songs I Love: 47: Battles - "Atlas"

When I decided this would be a fun thing to do at about 3am today, I hadn't fully thought about parameters for it. Shortly after waking up, I decided to limit this little exercise to songs released in the 21st century. Otherwise, I could open it up to a flood of total classics. While that would be fun, it's kind of easy and lazy. Maybe I will do that another year, but for now, it's new(ish) stuff only. Thank goodness my first three picks fit the format....

#47: BATTLES - "Atlas" (album: Mirrored): I'm the first one to admit that I had kind of a "WTF moment" the first time I heard this. The drummer for Battles, John Stanier, was in one of my all-time favorite bands (Helmet) and this just wasn't what I was expecting from a new project with him. Give it a few listens though, it'll grow on you. I (stupidly) skipped their show at Bottletree last year because I wasn't sold on them. I should've known he'd only be involved in complete awesomeness. I'm all about it now though and they'll probably never play here again.

Just to show that all of the vocals are not all Alvin and the Chipmunks sounding, check out the song "Tonto" as well. The light show in the video gets progressively cooler too, so you should at least watch it for that.

The List:

50: BLACK LIPS - "Cold Hands"
49: TV ON THE RADIO - "Wolf Like Me"
48: SNOOP DOGG (featuring PHARELL) - "Beautiful"
