Star jackson

Is there anyone out there who believes Bama will deploy a 2 quarterback system and try to take the pressure of of JP. With our defense as this as thin as it is a little ball control dual quarterback threat couldn't hurt could it? And without question jackson is the starter next year so why not get his feet wet?  With our goaline offense as bad as it was last year a 2 back shotgun set with jackson or even burton scott has to be an option saban has thought about. Not since freddie milons or david palmer have we seen bama do anything like this and as i recall it as pretty successful then. I dont think i can relive the end of the first half at scott stadium again

Eh

He has not played a down yet, and he is without question the starter in 09? We will have to see…....

I don't know if

Star will be ready to see the field in 2009, let alone 2008. He has the tools but it’s a big difference jumping from high school to college. In the Army All-American game, he threw an ugly pick and then responded with a bomb for a TD. The pick showed he will need to adjust to the difference in defensive speed, the TD that he can make big plays anywhere on the field. We’ll have to see. I have confidence in him, but I don’t want to expect too much from an freshman.

pick..

maybe i was wrong about what i remember about the pick, but what i remember from the pick he threw was that it hit the receiver and he tipped it up in the air about 10 feet and it came down into a defender’s hands. can’t really blame Star for that. Though I might be wrong about how the pick happened.

It's been a while, but...

It’s been a while since I saw it, but if I remember correctly Jackson made a pretty bad pass into very tight coverage, and I think his own receiver tipped the ball up in the air trying to break up a potential interception. It just happened to go to a defensive player.

Again, it’s been a while, but that’s how I remember it. I’ll see if I can find some video on it.

That's what

I remember, too. I don’t remember who did what, but it did seem like Star really forced one in there (probably assuming the defender couldn’t close on the receiver as quickly as he did) and the ball was deflected and picked. He made up for it with the long TD pass

It is a process

and I do not think Saban is going to rush anything. Star Jackson is the real deal, but I do not think we will play him much if any in 2008. Besides, McElroy has earned a right to get some playing time and I feel that he should have chance to play especially if we get a good lead on Tulane, W. Ky, etc.

I don't...

I don’t really see us having a special package for Star. It’s possible, but I think the odds are against it. First and foremost, Star has been pretty adamant about the fact that he is not a running quarterback… just a pass-first quarterback who can run when the need arises.

With that in mind, we’re not wanting him to be some gimmicky guy, we’re wanting him to develop into a legitimate drop-back passer, and considering the focus will be on his development in that area, I really don’t think we’ll see a Star package to take away from that. Moreover, we already have the Uno package with Burton Scott, and if we were to add a Star package, in addition to the base offense, that would get pretty dang complicated… and quick. I’m not sure that it wouldn’t all be a bit too much relative to how often you could actually use any of it.

Besides, McElroy has earned a right to get some playing time and I feel that he should have chance to play especially if we get a good lead on Tulane, W. Ky, etc.

Now I’ll disagree with that. I don’t see where McElroy has done anything to justify earning anything… this kid struggled this past Spring to throw more completions to his own team than opposing defensive backs. At this point, I don’t think McElroy has even earned the right to be the back-up just yet, so the talk of playing time may be a bit premature.

Tru dat

However, I would not rule out a Burton Scott package (not that you did, OTS).

I'll say this right now...

...and if I end up being wrong you are all obliged to remind me, but Star Jackson, barring some unforeseen and horrendous injury issues (knock on wood, knock on wood, knock on wood), will redshirt this year. There is just no way a program builder coach like Saban will throw away a redshirt year on what could be his QB of the future for some gimmicky package to take advantage of his “mobility,” which, get over it people! Like OTS mentioned, the kid is a drop back passer that happens to be a good scrambler, not some super fast “really should be a running back or wideout, I’m looking at you Reggie Ball” that can kinda sorta throw. Stop trying to turn the kid into the second coming of Vince Young and let him develop into the kind of QB we really need, not some flash in the pan (no disrespect meant to VY there, who was awesome and carried Texas for two years all on his lonesome) “mobile” QB.

Happy w/some misdirection

I don’t necessarily have to see alot of “gimmick” packages, but I would like to see a little more misdirection (cue up Andre Smith’s crushing block on Keith Brown’s reverse against the Hogs 2 yrs ago). We’ll definately have the speed guys to run some flanker reverses and other sort of misdirection plays. Sure, they’re a little more risky, but man O man do they get me stoked when they work. I don’t think we used misdirection much at all last year.

Here’s something to whet your appetite: what about a two return man set w/Javier and Burton Scott back there on punt returns… or Javier and Terry Grant. I remember Clemson running a 2 return man system a few times last year with “thunder and lightning” back there. You can really “kick-away” from a team when they have two guys back there.

I'd love to see...

...some receiver option/zone read stuff, like motion scott into the backfield from the slot and either handoff to grant/coffee/whoever or pitch back to scott on a reverse….i think i just wet myself.

As long as...

I see another crushing Smitty block. I still get so excited when I watch the YouTube of his block in the Arkansas game.

Not saying that it hasn’t crossed the coaches minds, but what about putting Javier on a play or two on offense?

I jus wanted to add...

Star Jackson is a fast muhfucka in NCAA09…I substituted him for JP and ran the option wit Terry Grant…PERFECTION…
