#45: STARFLYER 59 - "I Win" (album: My Island): A comment from bamavicki on the most recent "RBR Gospel Hour" inspired this next choice. While Starflyer 59 are by no means "gospel music" lead singer/guitarist/front man/primary songwriter Jason Martin has never hidden his religious convictions in interviews or things like that. They're one of the few openly religious bands that has a lot of cred in secular circles (probably because the lyrics aren't overtly or often even perceptibly religious.) Anyway, this band has been going since 1993 and I've been with them every step of the way and have everything they've ever put out. They have a new record coming out soon too! They're pretty obscure, so they haven't put out a lot of videos which made me limit my song choice greatly (I think I had two to choose from.) In their early days they were really heavy (example from '95 here), which is probably hard for people to imagine with their poppier current sound, but it's been a natural progression. They truly sound different every time they record a record and that's one of the reasons I love them. Oh yeah, the people in the video aren't the band. There's no way anybody in that video is old enough to have put out records in 1993. I should also add that while I like this song, there are infinitely better tracks on the record. They've should've consulted with me about what to pick for the single.
