Your RBR Word of the Day: contretemps

contretemps \KAHN-truh-tahn\, noun;
plural contretemps \-tahnz\:
An inopportune or embarrassing situation or event; a hitch.

Unfortunately for us, the state of Louisiana is behind some of the worst contretemps in Tide history, leaving us wide open for the barely literate insults of coonasses far and wide.

Don't you think it's funny...

That everyone in the south calls people from other southern states coonasses, rednecks, etc. Like the redneck fairy mysteriously skipped their own state? In reality the literacy rates (redneck rate?) across all of the southern states is about equal (read: crappy), with LA or AL “flip flopping” in the statistics every year (the battle for 48th place). So when I hear people from AL (where I now reside) calling people from LA (where I’m from) coonasses, I feel like they are more making fun of the south in general, than they are LA.

Besides, have you HEARD some of the people that call into Finebaum’s show?!!!

by LSU Jonno on Jul 30, 2008 8:06 AM CDT reply actions

I might be wrong,

but isn’t calling folks from all the other southern states “rednecks” actually a major part of the battle for 48th place?

why do coonasses

have such thin skin? people in another state use the word coonass and all of a sudden it’s taken as a personal affront. we’re called rednecks ALL THE TIME and you don’t see us whining about it and trying to label people as hypocrits. hell, i embrace it. what does it matter what someone calls you? If you have faith in yourself and know that you’re a normal, well-adjusted person, why get offended? I’ve always lived by the phrase, “he who angers you, controls you.”

btw, when someone calls you a coonass, they’re not making fun of all southerners, they’re making fun of you.

by EZ on Jul 30, 2008 10:05 AM CDT up reply actions

who was offended??

people from louisiana or sensitive media types?? every coonass i know (and i know more than i care to count) takes pride in being such and isn’t offended by the term no matter who uses it.

If you read some of the e-mails...

....we get from your state, I’m sure you’d consider them “barely literate,” too.

by Todd on Jul 30, 2008 10:33 AM CDT up reply actions

Also...

...I use coonass to describe LSU Fans/Lousiana people since it is pretty specific to Louisiana. “Redneck” applies to a lot of people and isn’t specific enough. Actually, the biggest rednecks I have ever encountered were in the northern Kentucky/Ohio area, so they have that going for them, which is nice.

by Todd on Jul 30, 2008 10:36 AM CDT up reply actions

Fact is

I have lived in various parts of this country and there are “rednecks” or “coonasses” in every single one of them. They may have different names but, in the end there are idiots everywhere you go.

Auburn fans are like slinkys... not really good for anything but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs.

I cannot...

...tell you how comforting it was to be travelling in the mountains of northern Japan and seeing a crappy yard full of cars up on blocks with weeds growing through them. The redneck phenomenon is world-wide—AND THANK GOD FOR IT!

That's trippy

Who’da thunk? There’s a crazy picture in my head right now. Thanks a bunch Bubba. (had me laughing too, though)

I didn't know...

...you’d be to Japan. How have we never talked about that?

Anybody know...

...who paid for that billboard?

by Nico2.0 on Jul 30, 2008 8:40 AM CDT reply actions

As a Bama grad and an employee of ULM

it pangs me to see this on your blog. Especially since I have to pass this billboard everyday on the drive home.

It was paid for by Hixon Ford.

I have avoided

seeing that sign since December when I was home for Christmas. It involved keeping my eyes only on the road at all times and now you post it. How could you?!

by TexasTideGirl on Jul 30, 2008 9:36 AM CDT reply actions

And that's exactly what I did

But it was mostly from Todd’s expert prose, ”... leaving us wide open for the barely literate insults of coonasses far and wide.” Just the way that use of grammar rolls off the tongue. A thing of beauty. And I don’t mean that, as far as his intent is flowing, I mean that just as a matter of syntax.

It made my morning. Thanks Todd.

By the way

people in Monroe are rednecks, South Louisiana are the coonasses!

by TexasTideGirl on Jul 30, 2008 9:37 AM CDT reply actions

If we didn't want to be

made fun of, maybe we should have beaten ULM when we played them last year.

by Bamagrad on Jul 30, 2008 10:57 AM CDT reply actions

I've said it before..

...and I’ll say it again, don’t get your panties in a bunch over comments from Les Miles or whatever, just remember that when you get pwnd by a whole state for years, it’s not only their right but their patriotic duty to talk a little shit about you. Even Bryant poked some good natured fun at Auburn on numerous occasions, and we all think of him as the classiest coach to ever walk the face of the earth. I will say, though, that some of the “U FKCING BMMERS IS TEH STUPDEST ASHULES EVAHS LOLZ” e-mails we get are irritating and considering the number of them, I’m pretty sure 80% of south Louisiana has access to the internet and has made use of it by sending poorly spelled and completely unoriginal insults to Alabama fans. Other than the moment of irritation it brings, I like to store them all away to make sure that our resurgence in the coming years will be extra sweet.

Here's the thing

I KNOW I’m STONED right now, but wtf? That’s some seriously funny-_ss sh_t Todd! Do they really write like that. I ain’t joking here. ‘Cause if that’s the way it comes out in an email. . . . . .well. . . .I’ll be a monkey’s uncle by marriage! That stuff just tickles my funny bones like crazy. Dude. . . .I’m laughing as I write this! And yeah, I’m a joker. . . but THAT’S NO JOKE!

by BixBeiderbecke on Jul 30, 2008 12:11 PM CDT up reply actions

I actually

find it funny. If you can’t laugh at yourself (or team) then lighten up a bit. I remember back to a certain coach and stripper yelling out ” Its Rolling Baby! Its Rolling!” I still laugh about that with a buddy today. The fact is Alabama is one of the most hated teams in the country ( just check out ESPN’s college football homepage) and when a team like ULM beats us its a big deal. Is the billboard classy, no, but its all in good humor. The truth is if we Alabama fans hadn’t been so arrogant over the last 50 years, a lot of the grief we take now wouldn’t be there.

Well said

No one wants to hear this, but in terms of hate from the general populace, we’re the Notre Dame of the South.

by Nico2.0 on Jul 30, 2008 11:41 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't know if...

...you can limit us to just the South.

by Todd on Jul 30, 2008 12:00 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not saying it's limited...

...to the South, I just used that as a term of convenience. Despite how much we’re hated, we certainly aren’t at Notre Dame level.

I would say

That most peoples hatred for Alabama isn’t aimed towards the Team/ school, its at the fans.

I think...

...it’s a package deal really.

ULM vs. Miss State

Maybe it’s just me, but the loss to Mississippi State bothers me 100x more than the loss to ULM. Intellectually, I know I’m supposed to be more upset about losing to ULM, they’re a mediocre mid-major, blah blah blah. Meh. Not happy about it, but whatever. But just thinking about the loss to Mississippi State … like I am right this second …. and I turn into a Tex Avery cartoon, complete with steam shooting out of my ears. Damn you, John Parker Wilson! You owe us!!!

The unbelievable fact...

...that it’s 2 in a row to Miss State is what REALLY hurts. I hope nobody gets the bright idea to buy a billboard when we beat the Barn this year. Oh wait, maybe right by Toomers Corner would be ok.
