The Crimson and White Roundtable: Tide Druid's Turn

1) Complete this sentence: Alabama’s biggest improvement from the 2007 season will be __________.

Pass defense. Kareem Jackson has a season's worth of experience now, and for all of his upside last year the true freshman in him still showed at times. That should be rectified, while the Strong Safety position should also have someone a little more capable manning it this year. Marcus Carter wouldn't have started at any other SEC school, but guys like Ali Sharrief and Justin Woodall have both the talent and now the experience of being in the system for a year to compliment Rashad Johnson in the middle. Plus, Mark Barron. I'm just saying. Finding another corner or two is imperative, but I think Arenas will be given every opportunity to prove himself (especially as the nickelback) while Marquis Johnson apparently improved enough over the offseason to play with the first team during the spring while incoming guys like Lester and Green could also make an immediate impact. Whoever is out there, though, should be an improvement over last year and we should start seeing better and better coverage as the season wears on.

2) Who will be the unsung hero of the 2008 Crimson Tide? This is a player that hasn’t received any pre-season attention, nor will he receive any post-season attention from the media. Yet without his presence, the Tide would be lost.

Corey Reamer. I don't know why, but I just like him. Could be the leading tackler performance for the first team during A-Day, or maybe it's the fact that we will have someone at linebacker with the pass coverage skills of a safety roving underneath and the speed to improve the dreadful lateral pursuit from last year's bunch, but whatever it is I think he'll come up with some big plays this year, even if he's probably destined for "role player" once the freshman arrive.

3) This is a rather vague question considering we haven’t even started fall practice, but what bowl game can we expect for this Alabama team?

Music City Bowl, maybe Peach. If I'm right that there are 9 winnable games on the schedule and we take them all, then the Peach Bowl will come calling in an instant, but if the 8-4 or, worse, 7-5 that a lot of others are predicting, then Nashville it is.

4) This next one has to do with the recent hub-bub over the sabbatical Kenny Stabler is taking from the radio broadcast. I would like you to pick your ultimate Alabama football radio broadcast team. Pick an announcer, color analyst, a sideline reporter or two, and anything else you’d like to add.

I shall answer in the language of YouTubetry:

Announcer

Color Analyst

Sideline Reporter

I wish...

...I had another blog right now just so I could post a link to answer #4.

You could’ve had Carl for analyst as well. His take on the 2007 BCS here.

Best answer ever. The inside trout, brilliant!

Alonzo Lawrence

Of all the incoming freshman, I think he will make the biggest impact on the D outside of Harris. Do you not think so?

Roll Tide, Bitches!!!

I don't know how..

...I left Lawrence out of my answer. Yeah, he could be an immediate help as well. It’s just good knowing we have some guys with speed and athleticism back there.

I can't even...

...make it through that Miss South Carolina video. That is just painful.

When I realized

that’s what it was, I stopped it. I’m just embarrassed for her!

She isn't any worse..

...than any of the other eye candy sideline-ettes.

Sarcasm

Don’t get me wrong, I love sarcasm, I’m one of its biggest fans, but c’mon. You can’t have typed that with a straight face.

I like Reamer because he’s an absolute beast in my NCAA 2009 dynasty. INTs, sacks, TFLs, freaking awesome.

(Also? Answer #4 needs to be framed.)

Awesome

1. This falls into the “wishful thinking” category, but I’ll pick: Quarterback Play. Here’s hoping another year of maturity, the addition of McElwain, and a veteran offensive line all come together to make a lethal cocktail of “death from above”.

2. Mike Johnson. The stability he’ll give us on the offensive line, aside from the “name” guys, will be critical for our success

3. I agree, Peach would be a great achievement this year

4. Eli Gold, Roger Schultz, and on the sideline…...Phyllis from Mulga!! :-)

That South Carolina video...

I can’t even get halfway. Once she said South Africa, I had to stop it before I lost my mind.

That was a truly painful video.

Seriously, we need to offer Kines some serious cash to be our color guy. So many Alabama fans will be laughing so hard listening to Kines commentary on a play with Eli Gold a bit flabbergasted. Pure gold!

Subtitles

Kines would only work on TV. You can’t have subtitles on the radio.

by Nico2.0 on Jul 30, 2008 12:24 PM CDT up reply actions

That's true...

Maybe force Keith Jackson back out of retirement, and pair Kines and Jackson together.

I've been bedazzled this morning.

Now, I’m verklempt.

btw: for #1, I believe the rule of engagement was, finish THE SENTENCE. (not write the term-paper, Ese’. )
