Around SBN: The Gift Of The 2003 Tigers

Crump sat out most of the spring with knee troubles, but the above linked article makes it sound like Crump just decided to give up football for personal reasons. His former coach at Hoover Rush Probst (ding!) had this to say:

"It disappoints me, and I think when you're in that position, you let a lot of people down. How many other kids would want that opportunity? It's tough to see a kid, who I think has tremendous ability, just throw it away."

Saban and some of the staff will be available to the media today and tomorrow, so maybe we'll here some more details about it fairly soon.

It was a combination of things

Part of it was injuries, part of it was that he has unable to put on any more weight. @68 is kind of puny for an OL these days.

I wish him the best of luck.

Sometimes

the fire just goes out in a guy. It’s not that there’s anything wrong in him, it’s just that the desire to play-caused by the frustrating things jthomas666 mentioned above (injuries/weight/limitations-fades. I’ve seen it happen to a lot of people. When it happens, it’s best to walk away.

Good Luck, Mr. Crump

I agree with Bamagrad, when the spirit and desire are just not there, it’s best to move on in life. He’ll always be able to say that he wore the Crimson colors, if only for a season. And that is something most of us could only have dreamed of doing, except for you Bamagrad, I tip my hat to you and young Mr. Crump. Best of luck young man.

Crump..

I really do hate to see Crump go because after his performance last year on the scout team, a lot of people were really expecting big things out of him in the coming years.

Unfortunately, what this reveals is a complete lack of depth on the offensive line. As long as we stay healthy in 2008 it shouldn’t be that big of an issue, but for 2009 this is going to be a problem. Caldwell and Davis will be gone, Andre likely will too, and it’s pretty scary from there on back. Cardwell is serviceable at best, and he’s really a bit small, and to this point Ross, Pharr, and Drew Davis are all unproven. Vlachos looked good with the scout team last year, but once you get past him there’s not much. I’m afraid that the 2009 line is going to see a ton of freshmen and sophomores, and it may very well have a true freshman starting somewhere.
