ESPN/Schlabach Bowl Projections
ESPN's Mark Schlabach posted his '08 Bowl Projections last week. He has Alabama playing Virginia Tech in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl. I think anyone would be happy with that over another trip to Shreveport.
Here's his predictions for the SEC:
BCS National Championship Game: Georgia vs. Ohio State
Sugar Bowl: Auburn vs. Texas Tech
Liberty Bowl: Ole Miss vs. Houston
Cotton Bowl: LSU vs. Texas
Capital One Bowl: Florida vs. Illinois
Outback Bowl: Tennessee vs. Penn State
Chick-Fil-A Bowl: Alabama vs. Virginia Tech
Music City Bowl: South Carolina vs. Miami
Papajohns.com Bowl Kentucky vs. Rutgers
Independence Bowl: Mississippi State vs. Oklahoma State
I personally hope we (as a nation of football fans) are not subjected to Ohio State in the title game again. I know they're a good team and all, I'm just tired of seeing them there. LSU vs. Texas sounds really awesome on paper. Florida vs. The Zooker! Tennessee vs. Penn State would hopefully be more exciting this time around. Kentucky vs. Rutgers would actually get people excited about the Papajohns.com Bowl (I think.) At least the Birmingham based bowl finally got an SEC tie-in. Not sure what to think about the Barn vs. TT. We saw what a good D can do to TT's offense in '05.

i was there in person
to watch roy williams single handedly run circles around lsu in the cotton bowl a few years ago. i pretty much hate both fanbases, but lsu more, so a small victory for me. is there anyway we can push that kickoff to some time after lunch??

They could...
....lose to us and still win the division.

True, but...
If Auburn wins the division, they will end up in the SEC Title game, and considering they have UGA in the BCS title game, that means that Auburn would have to lose in Atlanta to UGA. And the loser of the SEC Championship Game does not go to a BCS game, end of story. No loser of the SEC title game has ever done that, and that won’t change in 2008 either.
Honestly, the only way the above scenario could work - UGA in the BCS title game, Auburn in the Sugar - is if Auburn does not make the SEC Championship Game. In effect a situation where LSU or Alabama makes the title game, AU finishes a close second, and then LSU / Alabama loses to Georgia, thus opening the path for Auburn. But even if that happens, they would still need Florida to falter, so it’s unlikely.
It’s a nice prediction to make, I guess, but I don’t really see any probable way that it could work out.

They don't have to win the division...
...to get an at large BCS bid if UGA goes to the title game. LSU was in the Sugar Bowl two years ago when Florida played for the title despite not winning the west, and UGA went there last year when LSU went to the title game despite not winning the East (though they did TIE for the East, which I will mention now to avoid bringing down the wrath of our friends in the Dawgosphere).

Wilting in the spotlight
I’m still not convinced that UGA isn’t going to have an implosion this fall based solely on how they finished the season last year. It’s going to take a supreme effort by Richt to keep the team out of the stratosphere in terms of ego… There’s no doubt they’re loaded to the gills w/talent, but UGA has a short-term history of blowing the games that count(watch out for those Gators). Pair that w/the fact that they absolutely destroyed Hawaii in the Sugar + 1.5 bajillion positive press clippings about how “great” they’re gonna be this year and you have essentially strung together a schedule as a series of trap games. Can Richt maximize their potential? Certainly….but is it normal for young guys to get a little cocky after they destroy their competition…oh yea….can a preseason #3 team go 3-10 (ouch…that one hits a little close to home DuBose)...I’m calling it now…UGA will not be in the SEC or BCS Championship game…
