Next year...
…I vote we go for someone with demonstrable talent because it’s not like the three we’ve had so far are particularly genius at their respective crafts.

Nice on the "Watermelon Man"...
…but are the Easy Star All Stars the same reggae band that did “Dub Side of the Moon?”
by Todd on Aug 15, 2008 10:52 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Bingo!
And what a fine embellishment on a sublime creation it was. You down with island-beats Todd? The Skatalites came in on #16, Yellow Man on #21, and Jimmy Cliff just finished (it was “Smoke Two Joints” too! who’s holdin’? give up that “pers-stash” BS now! totally just joshin’. i’m workin’ out these days!)
Your Roy Acuff and Merle jams HAD ME PONDERING things, they did. You know there’s a God. Roy and Merle are messengers proving it as such! No way they both “just happened”. No way. (hallelujah!)
Lemme know Todd, I won’t mind burnin’ a tight-ass mix of ska, reggae, dub, and drum and bass for you. (if, when I get my copy of “Yea Alabama”, you agree to autograph it for me. . . .psss- you think Nico too? he’ll get one too, i’ll send ’em together. maybe, or maybe so?

We'll send you an autographed copy...
…in exchange for something new to listen to. I’m not quite as, uh, adventurous in my musical tastes as you two, but I’ll listen to anything once. I’m not crazy down with the “island beats,” wouldn’t really know the difference between all the different genres (it’s all just “reggae” to me), but I like a few albums here and there (King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown is a classic for a reason).

I am a fan of ska, reggae, dub AND d&b...
I’d also love a copy…maybe I can trade a mix for mix…haha…hit me up…

How is the...
…the Seun Kuti stuff? I love Fela and Femi, but haven’t heard Seun’s music yet.
by Nico2.0 on Aug 15, 2008 2:45 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Great stuff!
I think Seun is gonna blow up here in the States. Femi was just sublime, and Fela is/was a master. Seun inherited the Egypt 80 band and they FLY! “Na Oil”, “Don’t Give That Shit To Me”, “Fire Dance”, “Think Afrika”, “Mosquito Song” and “African Problems” – they’re ALL GREAT jams. The Kuti Afrobeat music is in very very good hands! I’ll get this down on a CD for you too. Don’t bother to buy it!

Ir-random 10
You’ll note that all these songs are by one band. That’s cause all I have to listen to is the brand new hot-of-the-presses Wild Sweet Orange major label debut I bought at their show last night. The album is great. The show was not. I love those guys but I’d appreciate it it they didn’t show up plastered and play all of 6 songs. Makes me ashamed of my hometown. Anyway…
Ten Dead Dogs
Tilt
Seeing and Believing
Either/Or
Sour Milk (phenomenal track)
An Atlas To Follow
House of Regret
Cickets
Aretha’s Gold
Night Terrors

I'm still not sold on them...
…mostly because Garrett was the only one I could ever really stand.

Well Preston absolutley screams “look at me!” but I have to admit he’s a heck of a songwriter. I love Parsons dearly but you remember how all his bands were. Then Preston shows up and they’re good all of a sudden. I don’t think I’d ever talked to Taylor before last night but he seemed cool (albeit shitfaced)

I never met Taylor...
…so I suppose I shouldn’t pass any judgement on him. YET.

Seun played a free concert . . .
. . in downtown LA while I was in Romania in July. I’ve only seen Femi play live. You ever heard of Afel Bocoum of “Alkibar” fame (funny word, no. a Bukowski hang out or somethin’?).
—— tangent of the day —A friend of mine sent me this insane homecooked CD get this—> he put Afel, Baaba Maal, Mansour Seck, The Mad Professor, Marcelinho Da Lua, Lo Borges, Soul Salaam, Vijayshree Subramaniam, DJ Rupture, Tom Waits, Brian Eno, and weirdass blurbs from a scratchy William S. Burroughs ranting. It was bananas! $50. . . .it’s yours! – - – totally just playin’ wicha. . .want a copy? . . . . GET IN LINE! . . . .no, really seriously- it’ll be no problem sending you out a copy- we’ll split the cost of the ever-changing stamps! Lemme know. (wouldn’t that be incredibly weird if YOU ROYALLY hated every single one of those World Beat badasses?)
