The Inaugural RBR Podcast, Warts and All
...or direct download here. Be warned, it's quite a large file (something like 37 megs, gonna have to figure out some way to cut that down). (ed- apparently the file contains some personal information that you can access if you open it in iTunes, so we'll just leave it as an embed for now and try to clean that up and also reduce the file size tonight.)

Good Stuff
As always, Richard was really informative and very insightful with his knowledge of LSU football. It gave me some good work listening. He did weasel out of the prediction part at the end; you have to give a prediction! Still, good stuff.
Todd,
You started doing good with the delay around halfway, and it sounded pretty good. Let us know about tonight. I have family stuff with the wife (b-day), but I would still like to listen if possible.

The delay...
…really threw me for a loop because I had tested it over the weekend and on Monday night with people calling in, and that was the first time it happened. Hopefully tonight we can get it going a little smoother since it will be live.

My guess (haven’t downloaded the thing yet) is that your bitrate is set too high for voice recordings. Music requires a much higher level of detail and, therefore, bigger files… typically on the order of 1MB/minute of audio. Podcasts can be at much, much lower bitrates without any major degradation in sound quality.
Music is typically encoded at 128Kbps or 196Kbps, but podcasts can really go down as low as 48Kbps and it won’t sound too bad. I wouldn’t ever go higher than 96Kbps unless music is the point of the podcast and you’re playing a lot of it.
Shoot me an email if I can be of any assistance.

When I did "save as"...
…I just did the defaults (I was actually using the Girl’s Mac to edit it with Garage Band, and have never used it before so I’m sure it saved at the highest bitrate possible), so I’ll play with it for the next one and get it down some more.

Also...
…I would prefer a download option so I don’t have to have the page open to listen or can put in on my iPod, etc. Still have the embedded player, but provide options you know.

Great podcast!
Bravo. Good job on the first one.
You may want to look into a flash player to use for these. Right now wer’e killing your bandwidth because the file loads anytime someone views your homepage or this page.
The 2 I really like are:
http://www.jeroenwijering.com/?item=JW_FLV_Player
http://www.macloo.com/examples/audio_player/
The JW player even has a download setting so you dont need to put a seperate link.

Better than expected
I have to say, I think it turned out better than expected. The lags weren’t so bad, but I understand you cut out some of the worst parts. Back-and-forth was just impossible, and it became kind of a straight question-and-answer session by necessity.
It was a lot of fun, and I hope I was a good guinea pig.
