With All the Julio Jones hope, who is Bama's greatest recievers?
I can't remember in all of my over 40 years of being a Bama fan, can't remember any one Wide Reciever that has the hypa and hope of the Bama nation so high. I truly hope that he lives up to it all and we can enjoy some magical catches over the next four years. With that being said, it got me a little nostalgic, and I began to debate with others who are the greatest recievers in Bama history. I know we didn't always pass the ball much, through the 70's and 80's , but some great ones came through. So I am going to make my list and would like to see some other thoughts.
1. The Wizard of Oz, Ozzie Newsome
2. Joey Jones
3. Tyrone Protho
4. Don Hudson
5. Dennis Homan
6. Albert Bell
7. Paul Bryant (ok, I'm cheating a little, so bite me)
8. Kevin Turner (ok he was a FB, did you see some of the catches he made)
9. Patrick Hape (again a personal pick, I know him)
10. Well. my mind has gone blank, so how about a little help!!!!!

Ozzie or Don Hudson
I’ll be honest, although it’s hard to compare eras, but how does Joey Jones and Prothro jump ahead of Hudson? Prothro was great, and would have been even better though.

DJ
You have to put DJ on the list. Admittedly, last year left a poor taste in everyone’s mouth, but he has to be on the list. He does hold the all-time record.

PROTHRO
is at the top for me. If only he stayed healthy. I hope Julio is as good as him and playes with heart. Thats what it really comes down to in being known as great. I’m only in my 20’s so I don’t remember the some of the older players on the list but I’ve heard about them all my life.

Freddie
I like all of em of course, but do ya’ll remember when Freddie Milons was in the Heisman Race for a while? I remember his sophomore season being amazing. I don’t have any stats on hand but I know he was awesome. I loved when they used to line him up at QB.
So him or Deuce in my opinion.

I would agree that David Palmer would make the list but..
I have a hard time with DJ just because he quit on plays and that really burnt my biscuits. Sorry, but quiters never win and winners never quit. I saw him on the NY Giants preseason game and he quit on plays there. The look the coach gave him was priceless.
As far as Freddie Milons, he just seemed like more hype than substance. And if all I heard about him being devisive on the team, then I would ever add him.

This discussion...
…has to start with Don Hutson, who some argue is the greatest receiver of all time. Ozzie Newsome has to be second, who some argue is the greatest tight end in NFL history. And, while it would be nice if he were second, David Palmer will be third on my list until Julio or someone else impresses me more. Tyrone Prothro gets my number four vote. I hesitantly put D.J. Hall fifth; talent-wise, he is one of the finest pure receivers we have ever had, which the records indicate. At number six, ro11t1dero11s favorite, Freddie Milons, an electric player. David Bailey could arguably be much higher, but he gets number seven from me, followed by Dennis Homan at eight. Antonio (A.C.) Carter gets number nine, and could be higher had he been able to stay healthy. At number 10, Mr. Quincy Jackson, whose amazing TD reception from Andrew Zow to keep our then-streak alive in Baton Rouge was simply beautiful.
If you want others to consider, don’t forget about Lamonde Russell, Curtis Brown, Jesse Bendross, Toderick Malone, Al Lary, Kevin Turner, or Howard Cross.
And I do believe that Julio Jones — and maybe B.J. Scott — have great chances of joining, if not topping, this list. Roll Tide.

Very good list.....
….my only change would have been to put Lamonde Russell into the top 10. As you mentioned, that guy was no slouch.

Antonio Langham
Yes I know he is defense, But the other QBs seemed to love to throw the ball to him!

Im sorry to say
but i think DJ geting that many yards and setting so many records had more to do with there not being many other options around him and him playing ALL 4 years. Im trying to take away from his ablility but we didin’t have exactly the strongest receiving core while he was here. Sorry to be a hater but thats my opinion.

Additionally....
…as the number of games has increased along with counting overtime and bowl stats, the modern crop of players are going to own the record books whether they’re the best or not. Over the course of a four year career, modern players are playing 10 or more games than the old-timers.

True...
…and I really can’t be a staunch defender of a guy whose attitude didn’t exactly reflect ‘team player’, but even if you ignore statistics like total yards and total TDs, Hall still looks pretty good with yards per catch, TDs per game, etc. By the former statistics, you would have to rank him #1 (which I don’t); by the latter, he’s still a top five or top ten guy. And even with Bama’s recent love affair with the passing game and the increase in games per season, the number of 100-yard games and consecutive 100-yard games he had are pretty impressive. With all players, especially receivers, of course, no statistics can really reflect overall quality, but you still have to give the talent Hall possesses its due. All that being said, and ironic as it sounds, I’m not surprised to hear he’s not giving 100% for the Giants, and I’m glad he’s gone.

Well I thought he was good....
but apparently Freddie Milons was hype. I read through the stats from his best year…65 receptions(then the record) on 733 yards and only 2 TDs. I guess being a younger fan I fell into the hype too.
I am changing my vote for Julio. I know, I know….It’s like saying Tiger is better than Nicklaus, but seriously he is. I know he’s done nothing so far, but he is a beast. I have been let down plenty of times by big name guys coming in and doing nothing, but I say in about 3 years the number 8 jersey will be the one seen round the stadium.

what about the likes of Keith Pugh
He would make the big play, time and again, regardless!
