Coach Mac
I don’t post much but felt a tug to chime in on the new OC…
Saw him speak a couple weeks ago and “impressed” doesn’t quite describe it. I’ve been very critical the past few years and I have to say that for the first time in over a decade the pieces are in place. As the video shows (almost word for word of some of what I saw) the key members of the program have bought in.
There was a lot to digest as far as first impressions go, but 2 things:
1 – The O will be considerably changed. I know that it’s been talked plenty about (RBR especially) how the guts of the playbook will not change much—CJM even said he thought no more than 40% this year. He highlighted how his style is designed to get the most touches for those who deserve it AND QUICKLY. Impact: May not be a big playbook change but confidence and efficiency had been the biggest fallacy for a long time. What I liked most was that he enjoyed the challenge of SEC defense to test his plays (mainly alluding to seeing his own D and CNS daily).
2 – He will seal the deal for more top players. Not sure if the video does it justice, but in-person it’s very clear: the guy knows his stuff and will tell you like it is. If he thinks a kid can play, he is committed to seeing them integrated into the gameplan. What top talent will not get excited for that. Impact: Mike McCoy video is a prime example – talk of physical, blocking receievers who work every down is a huge change (see DJ Hall). The coaches are preaching to them to consider everything you do that makes your team better. It’s essentially a rising tide lifts all boats message. Pun intended.
