50 Songs I Love: #35: Arctic Monkeys - "Brianstorm"

#35
ARCTIC MONKEYS
"Brianstorm"
Album: Favourite Worst Nightmare
2007

I figured Arctic Monkeys might be a one hit wonder after the insanely enormous success of Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not. Maybe not one hit in terms of one song, because there were several hits off of that record, but I doubted their ability to follow it up (especially so quickly) with something even in the same ballpark. One year later they came out with Favourite Worst Nightmare and I'm pretty sure I like it better. I still hear people say they think they're a flash in the pan, but I think Alex Turner has shown he can write extremely catchy riffs and very clever lyrics consistently. Even the mountain of B-Sides and "unreleased" stuff they have is incredible. The first single from FWN was the relentless "Brianstorm" that you can hear here...

The List:

50: BLACK LIPS - "Cold Hands"
49: TV ON THE RADIO - "Wolf Like Me"
48: SNOOP DOGG (featuring PHARELL) - "Beautiful"
47: BATTLES - "Atlas"
46: MASTODON - "Blood and Thunder"
45: STARFLYER 59 - "I Win"
44: SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE - "Shelter From the Ash"
43: THE DIRTBOMBS - "Chains of Love"
42: THE WHITE STRIPES - "Seven Nation Army"
41: BECK - "Girl"
40: HANK WILLIAMS III - "Nighttime Ramblin' Man"
39: SOUND TRIBE SECTOR 9 - "Instantly"
38: DAMIAN MARLEY - "Welcome to Jamrock"
37: AU REVOIR SIMONE - "Sad Song"
36: DAN SARTAIN - "Replacement Man"

I’d also have to say I like their second album better. Its not as catchy as the first, but if you leave it in on a long trip a couple of times in a row, you’ll start to love it.

Do you...

Do you have a lot of their b-sides and internet only release stuff? If not, you need to get some of it. Stuff like “On the Run From the MI-5” and “What If You Were Right The First Time?” are amazing tunes.
