I'm not a big fan...

…of the snobs who were described in this article, but I’m also not a big fan of writers who bitterly stereotype a large population and either create or enhance divisions between fans/members of the same team. Many of us have known the spoiled, immature elitist that the writer describes here, but some of the classiest, most generous people I have known have been members of fraternities and/or sororities.

And yes, been huge Alabama football fans, too.

The first Alabama game I attended in person was in the early 1980s (I was about 12), and though I don’t remember a single detail of the game other than that we beat Mississippi State, two things were indelibly marked on my psyche: (1) Bear Bryant looked more majestic in person than on TV, and (2) the Alabama student section looked classier than any group I had ever seen at any other sporting event. I’ve always been thankful that, in general, Alabama fans looked classier than, say, L.A. Raiders fans. Or Florida Gator fans, for that matter. I like the enthusiasm of the kids who paint their faces/bodies for a game, but I don’t necessarily want that to become standard practice for the entire fan base.

People who throw bottles at other people should be arrested, even if it’s me throwing them at Tommy Tuberville (it hasn’t happened yet, but you never know). And the mind-numbing, ultra-conformity espoused by most of the greek system is pathetic. However, I’m pretty sure a few ‘real’ Bama fans (and players) have been a part of that system and not been a part of the problems described in this article. Plus, I’m just not into this whole greek vs. independent, red state vs. blue state, black vs. white b.s.

I only approve of Bama vs. whoever we play this week. Roll Tide.

I like...

the fact many SEC football fans dress up for the game. I do however recognize that many preppy southerners think that by wearing boat shoes and a polo I am going to be impressed. Its a facade, your shit still stinks and money is not the most important thing in my life. So cheers to you if you want to look like a gay deck hand and pretend like your in some secret club.
