Around SBN: Steve McNair Dead - Former NFL QB Shot and Killed

BlogPoll Calling: Todd's Week One Ballot

1. Florida (vs Hawaii W 56-10)

Handled Hawaii as expected, but seemed a little sluggish on offense early. They seemed a little sluggish on offense in last year's opener, too, and we saw how that turned out, plus their pass D was improved (actually had a score) and they have an actual running back now.

2. Southern Cal (+1) (vs Virginia W 52-7)

I'm going to bump them up ahead of Georgia since Sanchez looked brilliant despite a lot of concerns over his knee and the offensive rhythm is back.

3. Georgia (-1) (vs Georgia Southern W 45-21)

I don't know what to make of the 'Dawgs here. I know the scrubs gave up most of those points, but that doesn't say much for depth (especially with DT Jeff Owens likely lost for the season), while reports on Stafford weren't spectacular either. And besides, if Kyle is dropping them to #3, then who am I to argue?

4. LSU (vs Appy State W 41-13)

Didn't really learn much about them on Saturday, so here they remain.

5. Oklahoma (vs Chattanooga W 57-2)

Ditto OU.

6. Ohio State (vs Youngstown State W 43-0)

Without Beanie Wells, will tOSU turn to Pryor for rushing yardage? The USC game just got that much more interesting.

7. Texas (+1) (vs FAU W 52-10 )

Bumped up by virtue of Mizzou moving down.

8. Oregon (+1) (vs Washington W 44-10 )

Same here, though losing yet another QB could be a big problem.

9. Missouri (-2) (vs Illinois W 52-42 )

They have the offense to pile up yards and points on anyone, but if they can't get some D going then they'll find themselves in the same predicament they did last year.

10. Arizona State (vs Northern Arizona W 30-13 )

The Sun Devils didn't get a lot of rushing done against a 1AA team, and that unnerves me a little. I'm letting them stay put for the time being, though.

11. Texas Tech (vs Eastern Washington W 49-24 )

The Red Raiders similarly were a little disappointing against a 1AA team, but I'm willing to give them the "first game of the year" benefit of the doubt and hope they can tighten up next week.

12. Alabama (+11) (vs Clemson W 34-10 )

Dominated Clemson in a shameful manner, and how much of it was because we really are that dominant of a team and how much of it was that Clemson just rolled over after a quarter I'm not sure. Still, bumping the Tide up pretty big on the strength of a great performance.

13. Auburn (vs ULM W 34-0 )

The Spread Eagle didn't set the world on fire, with neither QB topping 100 yards (they actually only had 85 yards passing TOTAL in the game), but they ran all over ULM so they have that going for them, which is nice.

14. Kansas (vs FIU W 40-10 )

Didn't learn much from a whipping of FIU, so they stay put.

15. Penn State (vs Coastal Carolina W 66-10 )

Same for Penn State. I hate teams that open with 1AA teams.

16. West Virginia (vs Villanova W 48-21 )

See above.

17. Utah (at Michigan W 25-23 )

The Wolverines showed a lot of resolve in fighting their way back into the game, but Utah got up too far and too fast for them to pull off the comeback. I'm tempted to bump the Utes up a little, but they did about as I expected and we'll have to wait a few weeks to see if they are for real.

18. Wisconsin (vs Akron W 38-17 )

Handled the Zips about like I expected. They stay put.

19. Cal (+2) (vs Michigan State W 38-31 )

I picked the Spartans to win, so it's a great opening win for Cal. Now we have to wait and see if they can keep it up or fall apart in about five weeks.

20. Wake Forest (+4) (at Baylor W 41-13 )

Put a shameful whipping on Baylor, but it's Baylor. Learned nothing.

21. South Florida (+1) (vs Tennessee-Martin W 56-7 )

1AA team, learned nothing.

22. Clemson (-10) (vs Alabama L 10-34 )

Tempted to drop them completely, but they still have the talent to go far in conference play.

23. BYU (+3) (vs Northern Iowa W 41-17 )

Probably should have had BYU in to start with instead of SC, but after they looked so horrible against NC State, I'm dropping the 'Cocks for the 'Cougs.

24. Michigan State (-5) (at Cal L 31-38 )

Tempted to drop them completely as well, but, well, ditto.

25. South Carolina (+2) (vs NC State W 34-0 )

I'm leaving them in for now, but they really looked craptacular against NC State for most of the game and I'm not even sure I should leave them in at all.

Dropped out:
20. Tennessee (at UCLA L 24-27)

Two Most Impressive Teams

The two most impressive teams were USC and Alabama. USC’s defense looked absolutely incredible at times. They have speed all over the place. The offense looked almost as impressive, as the defense. USC will definitely be worth watching once it gets into the PAC-10 schedule, and of course the OSU game.

Alabama, obviously looked awesome, and I think everyone has rehashed that game. I am so excited, that I am actually looking forward to the Tulane game!

cough, cough

I know it was wrong to text “Rocky Top” to stacks of friends last night. But the one overlap of hatred for LSU and Ole Miss fans and Alabama is certainly the Great Pumpkin.

I went to the Ole Miss game and learned a little bit. They’re imported the Wild Hog offense, to decent effect, but a sloppy and young defense is going to hemorrhage points for them all year.

Never quit. It is the easiest cop-out in the world.

With you

My first thought was this sucks for the SEC, my next thought was HA-HA-HA!

UT looks like they will start this season 2-4.

I totally agree

with this Top 25. I think all these teams are right where they should be. I watched the UGA game on CSS and they did look dominating until the 3rd stringers came in. I think there first real test at USC will tell a lot about this game. I just hope we meet them when we are both undefeated. I don’t want them losing to USC then coming after us for redemption!

Don't take life to seriously, you'll never get out alive.

extremely happy

that Tennessee fell off the bottom here. And I agree with your placement of the rest of the SEC.
Anyone know when the official week 1 polls come out? Thanks

like your 25

but after watching last night UCLA defense is good, and 3rd string QB settled down, they might be top 25 material. RN can coach.

That should read Norm Chow can coach.
